Haha, his short game is more than solid for sure!  Maybe adding headcovers (hybrids) to the bag this fall was my own tacit admission that I'm . . . . . .  short - typing that just brings me down!

Shoot, I'm working on becoming a 120mph guy and I'm still looking at adding 21° & 24° hybrids to the bag!  I'm starting to think all of the "flighted, low, piercing, running, blah, blah, blah" mess that I've been telling myself about driving irons is really just because I'm a tad vain and pulling a "2i" off the tee makes you look like a bad dude, regardless of how awful you hit it.

85 or so mph driver swing.

My full PW was 105 but due to neck pain I’ve intentionally reduced it to 80-95.  I’ve done the same with all clubs.  My scores have gone down.  Hitting more greens, and my misses are better.  11 index.

I’m using a little less backswing but also less effort.  Which was my goal in the first place.

LOL, you haven't had to add the 27 degree!  Finally faced facts about how well I really hit 5 iron most of the time - and to your point, man the 27 degree is so easy to hit and I can actually (successfully) pull off different shots with it better than the 5 iron. Damn.

In my defense, I do own the 26° & 29°, but they just sit on the workbench, unshafted, unloved.  All alone.  Pining for the day they get glued up and get to go out into this great big ol' world and see the sites, tee it up with the big boys, and then carve a 30y slice out into a body of water so big that it is on most ancient seafaring maps.

Might be more of an indictment of my swing than my clubs.  Just maybe.......

For me Driver distance has fallen right at 280, I will use my PW anywhere from 100 to about 125 yards depending on what type of shot I have into the green.

I have considered adding a 5h to replace my 5i.  I expect my full shots would improve with more consistency and distance, but my punches out of trouble would suffer.  I have tried punches with the 3h and my distance control is sketchy at best.  Hitting a beautiful punch 3h out from under the trees only to watch it bound through the end of the fairway, over the cart path, past the tree I ranged at 180 yards, and into a pond feels really bad.  My 3h is a 190 club full swing.  Arrgghh!

Say I am 115 yards out to the center of the green and I have the choice between a full pw or shortened 9 or 8 assuming  no wind and I dont struggle with overspinning it. My pitch stays where it lands on my homecourse greens, what club is the best choice?

That's a good question because I'm not sure if Monte is saying as a general rule we should not hit full PWs or that we should not try to nuke PWs.  If you hit a full PW 115 without overswinging, I'm guessing he may say that's fine.  But where I am going with this topic is that I'll go to the range and experiment with full PWs (not crazy hard ones) vs a 9i or 8i to the same distance as a full PW and see which one is more accurate for me.  I have a feeling the 9i or 8i will be.

Jack Pearsall swings too hard on his wedges. It is a problem that he can mitigate for spells, but it seems to manifest again. He doesn’t always recognize the problem until he’s hit a huge shoulder turn wedge shot and an awful result is presented. Usually left hook or a fat hit. Often it presents itself when a forced carry is in play.

He remembers Nicklaus saying amateurs should take an extra club rather than assuming a perfect strike distance. It’s good advice.

245 yard carry driver, 115 yard PW

My other wedges are also much shorter than other players (at least what I've read on these forums). My 60 degree is 55 yards; 56 degree is 75 yards and GW is 95 yards.

With full swing, I can hit each club 5-7 yards further but have a harder time controlling trajectory, spin and miss left more often. I will hit a wedge with a full swing maybe once every 3 rounds or so. Last time I did it, I skulled my 56 degree over the green lol (to be fair, it was on the first hole of an early morning round).

First things first.

1.  How far do you hit a decent driver under normal conditions?

2.  Under normal conditions, what distance do you pull a PW from?

This hits a bit too close to home for me.  I'm a 285+ in the air under normal conditions and I'm now trying to hit my Pw 140+ for absolutely no good reason.  Talk about being obtuse.  Honest to goodness, if I had a left arm parallel, 115y Pw shot, I'd be a plus 'cap.

Funny how that works....I have the 115 finesse pw but if I had the 285+ carry driver(is straightish a given?) I would be back to being a plus cap. 🙂

Monte, how far down the bag could one take this approach?

That’s likely going to depend on skill level.

Not too many 15 caps are playing 3/4 four irons.

Usually 7/8 is the cutoff for most golfers.

@MonteScheinblum, How much room is there in optimal distances for players who have a lower, more delofted ball flight versus those who hit their wedges very high and very far (sub-optimally?).

Meaning, it would seem to me that there is some room for what is optimal wedge distance depending on launch characteristics, maybe?

I suck at golf (high-handicapper, but only been playing regularly for about a little over a year, working on improving). I tried out this approach today of taking a shorter backswing between 50 to a 100 yards out but using more club. For example, instead of trying to hit a full swing lob wedge from 85 out and blading it, took out the 54 degree and made what felt like a left arm parallel swing. Worked out well, and will probably work out better with practice. Took this from thread to round without practice.

For sure.  My experience is the vast majority are well above that number.  I have yet to encounter a golfer above a 2 that doesn’t hit it closer not nuking wedges.
