Forgiving 4&5 Iron to pair with blades

Recommended Posts

Currently playing T100 4-P but I don’t like how much they spin and can lose distance. I went back to my MP-18 MBs and have been liking that lately, but need a 4-5 iron that can help a little more than the blades or the spinny T100 long irons. Was thinking of getting the 770s in 4 and 5, but any other suggestions for some semi forgiving long irons that won’t flight the ball so easily?

Option #1 is to just bend the loft on the long irons 1-2* strong. Launch and spin is mostly a function of delivered loft. If you still have the T100 irons, I would suggest a T100s 4 and 5 iron. Try to

I love my Tmbs ever tried those out?

Maybe MMC? Should pair nicely with the MBs.

What shafts do you have in them?

I play a heavy hybrid shaft in my 3 iron after reading the suggestion here.  Its done wonders.  Simple X-Flex NV 85 nuked the spin over the x100.  I also found the about twenty-gram lighter shaft helped me swing it around better.

I've hit the cast j15s.  They look nice and hit the ball great, and the back is nicely hidden at address.

I also like the Mavrik Pro long iron heads but they are really strong lofted.

Yep! I loved the 716s but just didn’t get along with the 718s for whatever reason. Would love it if they were forged.

Still got the 716s in the bag

so good, I never even was tempted to try the 718s

good to know I'm not missing out lol

mp20 5-pw, mp60 4 iron

toyed around with different profile and brand 3 and 4 iron

but i notice there is significant different sole profile with diff playing characteristic if you move away too far from the rest of the iron, and more importantly the feel

mp64 long iron would probably good, i just happen to have mp60 lying around with a softer shaft, actually helps to lift the ball higher too with a bit more spin

I just acquired a Tour Edge Exotics CBX 'iron-wood' in 22*.  The thing is absolutely a beast.  Very easy to hit, very easy to control, very low spin, and it does everything I ask it to do.  I liked it so much that I bought a 25* model and am expecting it to be delivered today.

The CBX is the previous model year, I think the new one is the EXS ironwood, and from all I have read, they are very good performers as well.

Option #1 is to just bend the loft on the long irons 1-2* strong. Launch and spin is mostly a function of delivered loft. If you still have the T100 irons, I would suggest a T100s 4 and 5 iron. Try to keep 4* of loft between irons as a starting point.

Option #2 I played the Mizuno MP18 MMC irons 6-P and had the MP18 Fli Hi at 4,5. The Fli Hi provided a lot of launch. I didn't find the same to be true with the MP20 HMB. At the same time, if you enjoy playing blades you may not enjoy playing something with a wide sole. I now play the MP20's and had the HMB at 4,5. Really didn't like the turf feel and got the MMC instead.

Option #3 Srixon 7 series 4,5 (AKA the Tommy Fleetwood): Thin sole, forgiving, player profile, lower spin than most in the category. All depends on whether you want to mix brands, like how they look, and if you get along with their V sole.

I’m curious in this as well.  I love friendly 4irons as they are so much fun to hit.

Anyone compare mp20 hmb vs 921 hmp 4i in terms of launch and spin?

The HMB is one of the worst irons I've ever hit.. I'll just leave that there.  HMP all day and twice on sunday.

Disagree. If you like a slimmer profile in a forgiving long iron without a ton of offset, HMB is the ticket. Nice clean appearance. Feel is excellent for a hollow body iron. Even though these are forgiving irons, feel is still iffy on off-center strikes, but very satisfying on center strikes. Also, even though they are G.I. clubs to some extent, the long irons (2-3-4) have a low piercing flight in my experience, which might or might not be what you're looking for. If you prize feel, then the MMCs will give you similar loft profiles as the HMB in a slimmer forged package that is miles better feeling than the HMB and almost indistinguishable from the blades.

I did something similar in the past with two 4irons.  It made sense because they were different styles of irons (single piece forged, multi-material springy face) and the lofts were different.  Gave me different types of shots for each.

I’m going the route of not matching manufacturers at the moment.  Just picked up a set of 921 tours.  I’m going to keep my 18 xforged ut 4i because it goes exactly the distance and flight window that I need.  Plus it looks and feels fantastic for a ut club.

Thanks. All good insights. I’m not a fan of wide soles so I’ll give the MMC and the Srixon a go for sure. Interesting no love for the 770s. I figured that was the best of both world with a thin sole and a really hot face.

I think a lot of people's answers are keeping the brand in mind to keep your irons to be Mizunos..? Maybe one thought. If I ever bunkered down on another iron set, it'd be HMB 4- PW haha. Those things are sweet looking and comes off hot.

I play P790 in 4-5i and P770 from 6 - PW as an analogy to your situation.

**Edit** Yes, if you look at the lofts, it does cause a bit of a gap when you switch models (i.e. P790 5i to P770 6i), so something to think about when you do your set up.

You might look at the JPX 921 Forged.

It splits the difference between the clearout distance of the 921 Hot Metal and the near-MP profile of the 921 Tour.

My hmb 4i flights nearly the same as my 921tour 5i.
