1. I’m not yet convinced you can swap an undamaged ball at all to play a certain hole

2. It’s certainly against the spirit  of the rules

3. What if you had won that long drive with a different ball and it turns out he hadn’t swapped his? What satisfaction could you possibly take from that?

1.  You can change golf ball that is "not" in play at anytime.  So in between holes, you could change balls.  E.G.  just before the long drive hole.  Then change it back after the hole is completed.

2.  No it's not.

3.  What if he is using a newer driver than yours?  What if he is using a 48" driver?  What if his ball was defective?  None of that matters.  We are able to do the same thing if we so choose.

But everything else you posted are agreed stipulations where everyone is doing the same thing.

breaking the letter or spirit of whichever RoG you don’t think important at the time is totally different

You are insufferable. Even if it wasn't a scramble where the rules of golf largely don't apply,  you can  tee off with any ball you want, as long as you finish the hole with it, unless its replaced in all the various other ways Sniper has detailed.

Again you are going off your opinions and gut feelings and not facts

1. Agreed, explained

2. It’s really not the done thing

3. All within the rules (although I’m sure knowingly playing a defective ball if it gives you an advantage is also not done)

I must be missing something why all the fuss in the last dozen posts about playing a different ball? If you lose a ball you play another -

Surely the question is whether you can swap to a different MAKE and MODEL ball during a stipulated round.

The fuss was whether you can switch ball types between holes. Which you can sans a One Ball event.

I have never, ever seen a decent golfer swap ball types for any reason other than that’s all they had in the bag

Preferred lies (aka lift-clean-place) allowed that day?  Then you can change balls any time you lift your ball.  Exception: not if ball on the green.

And as far as long drive balls, the maximum weight of the ball is governed by the RoG.  But the minimum weight is not addressed.  I have read that light weight balls are made and do fly further than 'normal' balls.

From the scrambles i've played any discussion of the balls used by any player is total nonsense. It makes no difference and no one cares.

A ball might get you a few yards (maybe) but if you're really reved up about 'next time', you're certain to do much better by looking at some videos on hitting a ball longer off the tee. There are some simple techniques that really work.

The nature of your question seems to indicate you have good natural swing speed but can evolve by learning about swing mechanics.

There's nothing wrong with getting excited about hitting the ball long. Its a fun and exhilarating part of the game. The great part is there's so much more.

Didn't the WLD use Top Flite BOMB ball?

Yes, I am spending a ton of time working on swing mechanics, including working with a coach who trains some long drive competitors. Primarily, I just want to play better, which for me means more consistent center face contact (driver and irons) and controlling the clubface better to manage curve.

But, it is a lot of fun to work on more swing speed as well. Right now, he has me working a lot on getting loaded in the backswing and getting more a body-driven downswing. It is always hard work to make swing changes, but I'm really excited to see where I'll be at next summer with a few more months of training under my belt.

In the meantime, I thought I'd get some guidance from the community here about the best ball to hit, which can only help ensure I don't get robbed of any more long drive titles 🙂

Really should just use your gamer. Theres just no sense in switching balls unless you're that good with driver.  According to the MGS the snell mtb-x is the longest for high speed guys and oddly the prov1x is longest for short knockers.

It’s  amazing how bent out of shape some people get over basically nothing golf-like events.  In my area, scrambles are generally fund-raisers.  You’re out there for a cause and a day of beating it around with your buddies.  Lunch, dinner and a few cocktails.  If you assume you’re going to get pencil-whipped in the end, you won’t be disappointed.

Really, how bad can that be? 🤷‍♂️

Scrambles are notorious for people changing out balls. It normal RoG, you can switch balls anytime you take relief, take S&D, or between holes. Or your caddy had a heart attack and the ball went on the ambulance with the caddy.

Except for when the One Ball rule is in effect, you can always switch types of balls where legal to do so as mentioned above.

Absolutely, switch all you like.
