Cheap second set-under $1k total. What do you recommend?

ephmen

Recommended Posts

Interesting project-trying to put together a second set of sticks for under $1k to stash at a friend's house at the beach so I don't have to lug clubs back and forth. About me: 5hcp, but prefer irons with significant forgiveness.  Struggling most with iron sets. Would love to find a cheap set of Srixon Z585s. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

PING i3 o-size irons or even OG Raptures

Some old Cleveland wedges or Eye2 or Eye 2+.. stay steel to keep cost down

Ping Rapture Driver and fairways, OG or v2

Adams a12 hybrids

Too many putters too list but some old Odyssey Rossie or Ping Anser would be the ticket for consistency

This sounds like a fun challenge lol. If I was doing it today id probably go with

2014 Big Bertha $100

Cobra LTD 3-4wd $100

712u $80

2007 Xforged 4-PW $300

Sub 70 Forged Wedges 52,56,60 $250

White Hot 2ball $60

around 900ish, super estimated prices. That would be a killer set. Add $100 for regrips or what not and you're good to go.

Quality NEW clubs at a reasonable price = The Golfworks

Driver: Maltby KE4 Tour TC + Mitsubishi Tensei Blue 60 + Lamkin grip = $240 + $10 assembly = $250

Fwy: Maltby KE4 Tour TC + Fujikura Vista Pro 65 + Lamkin grip = $130 + $10 assembly = $140

Irons: Maltby PTM Chrome Forged, 4-GW + TT Dynamic Gold 105 + Lamkin grip = $480 + $40 assembly = $520

Sand Wedge: Maltby FGT + TT Dynamic Gold 115 + Lamkin grip = $60 + $10 assembly = $70

Total = $980

You can buy a new 4-P set of New Level 1126s tonight for $499. An excellent iron period but unbelievable for the money. Fully forged, forgiving, sneaky long. The feel is so nice. If you want the more compact version, look at 902s (currently sold out after so many strong reviews.) They’re not super compact, more like an AP2 or iBlade. The 1126 is sized like a Bridgestone J40 DPC. I am very impressed by the quality of the NL forgings and the overall look and finish. If you email them, the owner gets back to you in no time.

Also like the Maltby PTM. Quality iron. Very forgiving. Great sole. Really a club you can play after long layoffs.

For driver, Srixon 585 or 785. I have seen 585s for under $100 and very clean. Both are bombers. Cobra LTD also a good pick. Maybe a Ping G? (I like the G30 too but it is very loud compared to the G.)

Fairways — Callaway XHot2, Titliest 915. Callaway Epic getting cheap. Any Cobra F8, F9.

To me Cobra and Srixon dominate in value because they are cheaper used for more recent models, while New Level and Sub70 are viable options new or used. Major OEMs you have to go a little older for better prices.

This is a fun game!

it depends on where you want to spend the money, but I think used hybrids and woods, new irons and wedges make the most sense...

cobra is always cheap on the used market, but srixon makes a good driver too... honestly, I’d search the shaft you want and buy whatever head it comes with.

Honestly, probably the best approach for the hybrid and woods... figure out the shaft you want and see what’s attached!

costco wedges seem like a no brainer, but you could also go golfworks.

irons just depends on what you are looking for... plenty of used sets on bst and eBay, lots of good dtc options.

In todays day and age of massively over saturated used club market and given the black friday deals that were going on with online retailers cally pre, global etc, this should be a piece of cake (hell even $1k cdn wouldn't be hard ) depending tastes and preferences.

To save some coin on a newer woods and wedges, I would go older irons (I'm hugely partial to I20s, but even a bullet proof set of I5s would more than work), as really, there is soooo much good stuff out there.  Putter is personal preference, so harder to pick for someone else.

Couple of sets of z585 3-PW on eBay at this point for $550 (Buy It Now) that with shipping are under your $600 target for irons -- one set with graphite shafts, the other one steel.

PXG Express (their online store on eBay) has set of 0211 5-SW Regular Flex for $512 with free shipping that are rated as being in very good shape.

New 0211 are on sale for $89 each brand new that you could order to your spec.

The strategy that has worked for me on having a second set at the friends beach house, is to take my putter with me (since I've invested heavily and can't replicate cheaply) and that is not too much to "lug".  So I'm playing 40% of my shots with that know quantity , and not trying to adjust to anything else.

Then when I upgrade any of my other gamers, I move the outgoing to the beach house, and sell the oldest  on the bay.  That way I get a bit of an offset toward the new, and know that the set at the beach house works for me.  I've done this in stages over time - Driver, Fairway woods, Wedges and Irons.

These clubs have got to be a joke, right? Just trying to cash in on folks burning cash and looking dumb while doing it? I'd love to see if they have any technical merit whatsoever. I didn't even know they existed until I stumbled across them surfing around. Some of the reviews online are hilarious.

I'd go heavy on 3-4 year old Cobra. They had a ton of gear with adjustability, so for a set that you don't play often you'd be able to tune the specs real-time to be similar to what your current gamers would have.

You could get a Driver/Fairway/Hybrid from the F6, F7, or F8 range for less than $300 total, leaving $700 for irons and wedges. Throw in any generic Anser-style putter and you're done.

I'd start by looking at Sub70.  even check out their used section, might find what you're looking for at even more savings.  The company is great to deal with

Ping G400 max
Ping G410 5 wood
Ping G410 7 & 9 woods

Titleist T350 irons
54* & 58* Sub70 JB Wedges
PXG Operator H w/ BGT stability tour shaft or  SIK FLO C with LAGP shaft

Cosigning Sub70. I just put together a combo set of 699-699Pro with upgraded shafts for $700. Stock it comes out to like $500 I think. The 699 range is great, too, having demo'd them extensively. They have putters, wedges, hybrids, fairways and a new driver coming soon, as well. I think you could easily get a whole bag from them for sub-$1k.

Edit: Decided to built a mock-up:

Driver TBD

S70 3wood - $150

S70 699 irons 5-P - $426

Costco wedges (great suggestion above!) - $169

S70 putter of your choice - $150

If you have a backup driver, that's a full set of brand new clubs for $895.
