I don't know if there is a "bad" era, but certainly bad moments in golf fashion....and players who were poorly dressed in those brief eras. I remember guys like Rory Sabbitini, Woody Austin, Jesper Parnevik, Ian Poulter, Shingo Katayama and John Daly were horrendously dressed most of the time.  Actually...the monochrome polo's with outlandish color pants, that era was garbage.  Even some of Tiger's clothing early on was suspect.  Davis Love III had nice, albeit conservative styling with Ralph Lauren Polo. Payne Stewart was so uniquely dressed, it was fun to observe.

I'm 40 and I wear leggings out on the course on cold days.  Nothing wrong with wearing them especially when you have the legs to show them off, haha.  I also do pink shirts, white belts and hoodies as well.  Flat brim hats are meh and not my style, but I'm not going to criticize anyone for wearing them out on the course.  Btw, I grew up on a private cc.

It's fashion. It comes and goes. Every era has some cringe worthy aspects

 

To me, style right now is fairly benign. Sure the joggers that pop up every now and again are terrible on the golf course, but overall what guys are wearing on tour are casual, but have some refinement to them.

We are about the same size and I havent had any issues finding shorts. How tall are you? I am 6'3

I think there’s a big confusion between the Lululemon joggers and tights. I imagine some of the older gentleman are picturing men golfing in yoga pants... that’s not what it is. Just a more taper, tailored look. Joggers stop short of the ankle and some have a cuff there, but they’re a far cry from spandex leggings.

Last decade had some bad spots with the massive belt buckles, boot cut pants, and some unfortunate shirt cuts. 

 

The 90s were pretty bad with the heavy cotton shirts and wrinkled khaki pants. 
 

I’m not fond of current trends with the athletic brands. 
 

 

 

But, I do enjoy the current looks from Polo, RLX, Peter Millar, etc.   

 

The 50s and early 60s were the epitome, of you ask me. Well-fitted polo shirts, pants (even the pleated ones) that draped nicely, shoes that were made - not manufactured. Timeless, IMO.

I had a tasty mustard yellow Pringle sweater with Geometric George on it. I got rid of it a few years ago, but I bet there are collectors out there who would pay good money for it.

I just realised that Geometric George is a lefty, or at least he is in that top picture.

My blue argyle Pringle was snazzy. pattern in kelly green, white and yellow.

I still like the colorful stuff, using some bright tones in the wardrobe when possible.

I thought Bob May when dueling with Tiger looked like he had to go back to his sniper position in Iraq after the round. Jeff Maggert, too, this Beige-Khaki-Brown Ping stuff was AWFUL. 

I like the 60s, Sam Snead in Shell‘s WWOG looked sharp. 
 

I do like the tighter cut pants nowadays, IF the person wearing them is athletic enough. 
The modern shirts- not so much. The best thing about them is the breathable materials, but I tend to buy shirts at Rockabilly stores. Gotta match the shoes then.

I played today with a set of Mizuno MS-7 irons (similar to the TP-9s), so I wore my only surviving Pringle to match. My wife took one look at it and asked "you didn't choose that, did you?"😒

I mean, you can call them whatever you want, and god bless ya if you like them, but this is the least masculine look I have ever seen on a male on a golf course. This just screams prissy girly guy. The only difference between these and spandex leggings is these aren't spandex.

 

I'm 40, grew up in the 90s, and I would take oversized cotton pleated pants and shirts 5 sizes too big over this look any day, and twice on Sunday.

 

I personally prefer clothes that actually fit. shirts that do not look like you're wearing your uncle's hand-me-downs, and also that don't look like you raided your 10 year old little sister's closet. I like pants that are not pleated that don't look like hammer pants from the 90s, but also pants that do not look like they are ready to bust a seam. Pants should cover your ankles and break over the top of your shoes. A little bunching is ok, but too much and it looks like you're again wearing your uncle's hand-me-downs. Properly fitted clothing is the key. If your ankles are showing, your pants are not long enough, and there's really just no getting around that.

I think there are more good golf shoe options now than there ever have been as the running shoe platform (everyone) and casual looking models (like Ecco and Truelinkswear) gain popularity.  G/Fore Gallivanters are a fantastic updated option if you like the classic look.  I've found them to be very well made and very comfortable.  Of course, FootJoy still has the Icon and the 1857 line that are in that vein as well.  There are a few niche brands (Lambda and Stuburt come to mind) that do the classic stuff too. Never been better!
