Trying to declutter & pair down my golf equipment... do you all keep a backup set or does that defeat the purpose of decluttering lol

It's a sickness.... I just like golf bags, and never end up selling the ones I get tired of.  If only there was somewhere to sell them ?????

Yeah, you could definitely make a case for calling it an addiction to own that many clubs for sure. Definitely lots of avenues to sell used clubs...the BST, E-Bay, Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace etc. Would take some work for sure, but probably would be a big relief to have them off your hands and free up that space!

I had the same dilemma of things getting piled up with some value left in it.  Started to catalog them and began putting them up for sale.  Sold most of my non gamers and have kept 1 or 2 equivalent backups/collectibles.  I have 2 less golf bags full of clubs and got rid of a large stockpile golf balls that don't normally game (trying to stick to one type).  It was great to see the extra cash rolling in from the sales and have also made a few friends during the process.

Right now is a great time to sell extra golf gear.

Actually that's not the half of it.  I believe that 10000 clubs of various sorts were donated to various charities; First Tee and the like.  AS I seem to recall the details, @Ironmaster Oddities purchased 15000 clubs in an estate sale for $2500.  There was a two car garage packed floor to ceiling, front to back.  Unfortunately with all the changes here at WRX over the years the photos have been lost , but I can assure you that they would have left your jaw agape!

At the time I believe that he estimated that the collectables in the hoard would have been worth between $25K-$40K based on eBay pricing.  I don't think that he made anywhere near that because after a while it was more a matter of getting rid of the clubs because he had to rent a small wharehouse to sort and organize everything as well as ship out from, so there was a lot more cost involved in the project than just the purchase price.  I believe that it took about two years from beginning to end by the time he was left with the collection in the post above.

I'm not sure who actually made out the best on that deal.  It would have cost the estate about $3K to get a removal service to come in and haul it all away, so in the end they were about $5500 ahead by selling the hoard as is in place.

The garage could have looked something like this

Actually, I think that's the Niles Hoard right there.  The photo definitely looks familiar.

That picture definitely led me to the deep questions you were asking the other day...so many questions for sure! I think the biggest ones for me are why anyone would collect that many clubs, and how they were able to stack them all into that garage? They must’ve owned a massive golf store that shut down and were keeping them in the garage until they opened another location due to finances maybe? That is like the Area 51 of golf...so many questions for sure.

I tried doing that at the beginning of the pandemic.  I sold a ton of stuff and bought what I convinced myself was going to be the last set I would own.  That set is now boxed up and in storage while I mess around with two sets which are so similar that I'm considering therapy because I'm obviously out of my mind.  If I'm placing blame, it's on GolfWRX.  It allowed me to easily succumb to my ho-ish ways and get lost in the BST red light district.  I need help...

Well, this thread acted as a catalyst for me to get rid of some more stuff.  I've got a few clubs to go, but I'm basically down to a Sunday bag and a full set.  It's a bit cathartic to fill the long boxes and ship them off to their new, very happy owners...

In my mind, decluttering is getting rid of extra things that don't serve a purpose.

So along those lines, as long as backup(s) set(s) serve a specific purpose (visiting friends/family, course-specific, trying out different heads/shafts, etc), then it makes sense to keep multiple clubs/sets.

But if you're making excuses to yourself to keep them, then declutter away
