Cheap a** putters.

lefthack

Recommended Posts

While I am pretty sure I am the minority, I was curious if anyone else uses a cheap a** putter?

I get the technology behind my irons and woods, putters have never seemed like something I needed help with from a technology standpoint.

My old putter was a Tigershark I got in college in 1989 and just recently decided to replace it with something shiny.

My new putter is a "Tour Percision Milled" TP-M5 that was listed on eBay as a "Tour Precision Milled" and I thought that was funny. It was $18 and I had a $15 credit, so $3 out of pocket. That is a cheap a** putter.

35" graphite shaft (no idea why, but why not?) and a pistol grip. I dig it

Don't get me wrong, I love the looked of Tigers Scotty, but it costs more than all the clubs in my bag.

I have a senior golf partner who's used a second hand, garage sale Ram Zebra putter for the past 25 years. You couldn't force him to take "Tigers Scotty" if you paid him.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I WISH somebody made a fake Scotty Cameron in left hand. I saw the side by side where other than the looks, the performance was the same. 🤣

My favorite Odyssey putters were purchased below $50.  I happen to putt best with them as well, which is a bonus.

All that matters is finding a putter that fits your stroke.  That can be $20 or $2,000 depending on what you want to look at.

Got a Nike Ignite 001 putter at the thrift store for 3 bucks. Was in mint condition and feels great.

I paid that for my Ignite putter head cover, nice work.

I've putted with used $15 Ping Ansers, $20 no-name version of a two-ball, a few out of the used bin a the local sports equipment recycler. They can all be very serviceable, very effective putters.

As long as it fits your eye, feels good, and you can put a confident stroke on it, that should be your only criteria.

I've also been fortunate enough to be the recipient of a very nice "boo-teek" putter as a birthday present. I wouldn't have ever bought it for myself, but it sure is nice to have as a gift from my family. I cherish it for that reason alone, not because of brand name on the putter. I use it and it putts just fine, too!

The putter I'm currently playing is a Ping MyDay, I bought from local classifieds for 5 bucks, then a 12 dollar lamkin deep etched and 2 strips of lead tape. Great stick.

Every putter I've ever spent more than $200 on leaves the bag after a round or two, or hasn't even made it in.  Last year I gamed an old Kirk Currie and this year I gamed a second hand Toulon that I didn't get as cheap as $30 but I didn't spend a mint on it either.

Nothing wrong with cheap (blank) putters if they roll the ball well for you. I have a couple of Confidence blades that roll the ball very well and just need new grips.

I probably save five strokes around because I paid a lot of money for my putter. More expensive putters just putt better.

If that were true I'd own an expensive putter. I'm currently putting with a Ping Anser F fished out a lake. The restoration is in Putter Mods.

My dad won a lot of club championships with a zebra and I gamed one through high school.  I still have one I use on the carpet sometimes.  I actually almost bought one of the stroke lab Tuttle because it kinda looked like the zebra 😂.

Nothing wrong with a cheap putter especially if you are partial to an answer style with limited technology.  The more expensive mallets always seem better balanced to me though.  Doesn’t have to be super expensive but I’ve never felt a $20 mallet that I loved the balance of.  An old ping answer feels perfectly gamable though and I have a ping zing that I rotate in every now and again...

I almost got a Ping Zing 2 putter, just because I loved my old irons and they look cool. I'm simple and like a basic blade.

Price tag doesn't have a whole lot to do with putting ability.  If fits your eye and you can putt with it, use it...you're friends who paid $300+ for a putter will wonder why they did 🙂

I use a putter that I picked up for $10 from my favorite golf store's clearance bin. A knight evnroll 3 or something like that. It's more of a mallet type, I figured I'd give it a try. I like it a lot, works great for me, I love the alignment, triple track before triple track. Now that I think about it, it would take quite a lot to replace it.

Cheap putters are great.  All three of mine cost less than $500.  That's not a bad deal considering they're all customized to me...

I think I have less than $350 in my bag. Retail it's about $2k, but I don't pay retail.

Hell, my club membership was only $700/year. I could never justify a $500 putter, unless it putt for me. 🤣

Please believe, I'm not saying you shouldn't spend $500+ on a putter, if that's what you want to do. Somebody has to. But even if I won the lotto, I would still buy my Corvette used. But I also drive my Corvette when others don't, so there is that.

Or can I propose that alternatively one can also find a putter they like and work very hard for multiple years to develop a stroke to putt effectively with that putter? (As I did with the left side example above)

This right here. I started another thread about buying equipment to fit your game or gaming to your equipment.

I could buy a driver to fix my bad swing, or I could work at my swing to leverage the club. The putter for me is a no brainier.

You take your $500 putter with you when you play Putt-Putt golf with the kids? Or do you sink the clowns mouth with a bright red universal blade like everybody else? I still say Putt-Putt is harder than real golf putting. But I also have taken my putter to work on my stroke. There is a mini golf course at the driving range, so it works out nice.

<Edit> I actually have a black one just like the one on the right, but it was only a 32 and I couldn't make it work. I also liked the milled face on my TPM-5

I have an old, cheap putter with its original grip (has to be 15 years old).  It's rolling so well for me right now that I'm afraid to even change the grip.

The main reason I got a new one is my old putter grip is wicked dry. It's a TigerShark P Square oversized and I've had it since 1988. I got aSuperstroke Fatso 5 but don't like it. It's close to the same size, but not rubber.
