Walk or ride in colder weather this winter?

Recommended Posts

With weather getting colder I still plan to play as I have in every winter past but not to keen on enclosing myself in a 4x4 golf cart with a cover a heater blasting (covid). Taking a cart solo may be an option but it wasn’t this summer with the amount of play there was. I hear people say walking in colder weather is warmer since you stay moving, any truth to this? Are people that are planning to play all winter going to walk or ride?

I think there is truth to it. I think it keeps your muscles warm and allows you to stay in rhythm. Finding good rhythm and tempo can be hard when it is cold and you subconsciously want to force the ball around the course with overly aggressive swings.

Prefer walking in cold weather as movement keeps me warmer, unless it’s windy.  Depends on which group I’m playing with, as one only rides. In that case it’s ride with a cart cover, but no heater. I pay extra for a solo ride, due to COVID.

Definitely walk to keep warm. I use a push cart and walk almost all my rounds, but I enjoy carrying a half bag and playing when it’s colder too

While not sure about this winter yet I used to walk with a push cart.  Get the mitten handlebar thing from clickgear and some hand warmers then your set.

Always walk in cold weather. Bring a coat along to wear while you're walking between shots and bring a pair of large mittens with hand warmers. If you're using a push cart, I prefer the mittens over the dedicated handle bar mitten attachment because you can wear the normal mittens onto greens and tees.

If I keep my hands warm, everything else is tolerable.

Walking won't keep you warmer if you use an enclosed cart with a heater imo.  I prefer walking overall, but definitely more in the winter because of cart path only rules.  I hate taking 4 clubs with me.

I walk pretty exclusively anyway, but I play all winter, and with some thermal undergarments and about four layers on, I will sometimes actually sweat.  There are a few times that I've ridden a cart in colder weather, and I definitely felt cold.  Even with a heated cart, I suspect getting in and out is colder than walking once you get the body heat working.

Huge amount of truth to it. I walk most of my rounds anyways, but I feel it's absolutely critical to walk when it's 55 or below outside. When you ride in a cart in the cold, not only are you not moving as much as keeping the blood flowing, but the air moving on you while riding makes you feel even colder.

Our state still has a policy in effect with one rider per cart, no bunker rakes, no ball washers, no spike cleaners, and sponges in the cups.

I have been riding solo this fall. I played 18-holes today on a fairly empty course, in 1 hour and 50 minutes. With the windshield in place, the 48* F temperature was comfortable.

The weather forecast is two to four inches of snow tomorrow afternoon, so today may be the end, for awhile.

I ride regardless but without a windshield its been brisk. Also was having traction issues on the frozen grass.

Walking is warmer, unless you have to wait on a tee box for 10-15 minutes and you start to cool off. I prefer to walk and this season's end will be the first I use an electric cart in lieu of carrying. This particular time of year with 35* starts and warming to 60*, you'd better learn how to layer properly to suit yourself. The only time I prefer a cart (this time of year) is when the leaves are scattered all to hell. Having a cart (in this instance) is a Godsend.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Thank you. I have felt this, but didn't know how to say it.

You put it into words, vey well.👍👍👍👍👍👍

You are very welcome my friend; and thank you for the kind words. It’s good to know I’m not alone in feeling it.

I am sitting on my couch right now trying to find the motivation to head to the course. It’s mild for this point in December and I ought to take advantage, but I know at 38-40 degrees, I’m just not going to swing it well out there. Even if I think of nothing other then rhythm and tempo, my muscles just won’t have it. I feel like 45 degrees is the threshold, anything colder is counterproductive. But it’s still a good walk, so I should get my lazy arse off the couch.

Walk at least you are getting the blood flow and building some warm up. Riding would suck in cold weather.

Definitely walking, for warmth, and due to the fact that a riding cart is a rare commodity in Michigan where I play during the winter. I use some mitts for between shots and switch between carrying and a push cart. Depending on my mood.🙂

If there is some wind... I will sometimes where some clear classes to keep my eyes form watering if overcast.

I walk and carry exclusively anyway, but definitely during the colder months. Of course, my "winter" in Louisiana is a little different than winter in most other parts of the country. I walked 18 in a steady drizzle yesterday when the temp hovered between 48 and 50 for the entire 3 hour round. At no point was I ever uncomfortable. I will say that hand warmers in the pockets of my pullover are a godsend.

Walking definitely warms me up and keeps me loose. And it's more likely to be wet here with carts on path, which I REALLY can't handle.
