Lesser known putters

Down to the putter in my perpetual reconfiguring of my bag...

 

I'd love to hear of some cool/off the beaten path/even just slightly lesser known putters that y'all like.

 

I just don't have interest in pulling the trigger on a Newport or Spider (thought I'm sure I eventually end up with one or both).

If you want something custom you could check out Byron Morgan, Piretti or Brandon Matthew. Lots of options out there.

I really like higher end TP Mills putters. The balance is spot-on with his pieces. If you don’t want to spend that much, you could look into a used Gauge Design. His putters definitely fly under the radar, are high quality, and can be picked up used for pretty cheap. Kevin Burns’ pyramid milled putters are top notch for roll with a soft feel, but it’s harder to find used ones for cheap and buying directly from him ain’t cheap. I’ve also heard really good things about Black Lab Golf putters out of Savannah. I’ve never tried one of them, but they look nice and are affordable. I also recommend Mack Made, but his stuff is kind of expensive since you basically design all the etching yourself on one of his pieces. It really depends on how much you want to spend. If $600 is not a problem, you have a lot of really cool options. If you’re maxing out at $300, you’ll need to hunt down a deal on eBay or here to score a winner.

There are tons of options out there all from small one man custom putter makers just depends what you want to spend. You can get something from Goodwood, Cushman, Compass Golf, MackMade, Snrg Design, TP Mills, Byron Morgan, MannKrafted, National Custom Works, Piretti, Miura, etc, etc.

What kind of headshape are you looking for? I think some of the older Bettinardi stuff is pretty cool and flies a bit under the radar.

I find myself being a fan of the wing/fang putters. I believe in the physics and they look better to me than the half moon shaped or two ball alignment (for example) type of putters. I used a blade for a long time and like the look, but I just think I put better with something with more mass and balance.

So if you want a #7 style then it would be: Lajosi, Black Lab Golf, Compass Golf Co, MackMade(he can make any shape), National Custom Works (can print any shape), and I may be missing someone as well.

There’s also options nearer to the beaten path worth checking out: Bettinardi, SeeMore, Evnroll, Toulon. I see OP just said they’re looking for a fang style head so maybe:

I’ve seen #7 mallets in Carbon (my current gamer below), Lajosi, and Low Tide as well.

Byrons are probably my favorite at the moment.  His GSS DH89 head feels amazing. His putters have more soul in them it seems. 

 

I just took a leap and ordered from a somewhat smaller shop Kingston putters.  I had him make me a GSS Tiger replica and it turned out awesome.  Going to roll it this weekend.  
 

Next shop I’ll probably be ordering from will be Compass.   I really like his design and will look into one of those in the spring.

Of course.  There’s a ridiculous rabbit hole you can go down with putters, but to me you want to start with the things you like/don’t like and go from there.

Try the putting engineer. The name says it all. They only produce in small batches and u gotta preorder them in advance, but totally worth the wait. They know what they are doing and their putters don’t cost an arm and a leg.

If you're new to custom putter world (AKA, "Take all of my money, please"), Black Lab Golf putters are a great starting option and much cheaper than a lot of the other custom makers out there.  Sounds like you'd be looking at the BL-7 model, and you can choose the finish and stamping.  Plus, the company is owned by Chip Usher, who is a great guy to deal with.  I called Chip last spring looking for a very specific putter shaft that I had bought from him 6-7 years ago for a TP Mills build.  He didn't have any left, unfortunately.  The next day, HE CALLED ME BACK to tell me that he had called around to some other sources he knew and still wasn't able to find one.  I didn't ask him to go that extra step and he didn't tell me he was going to, but I guarantee you that the next time my phone rings with an unknown number from Savannah, GA, I will answer it!

Or a very under-rated, lower cost option would be the Cleveland Huntington Beach 11 (original or SOFT).

Chip at Black Lab made this for me earlier this year. The pics don't do it justice but the colors coming the BOS oil can finish are crazy good. Chip was a pleasure to work with and it didn't break the bank.

+1 for Chip.  He made a custom bl-7 for my father-  Best gift he has ever gotten.  Price was right, everything was perfect. 

 

I'm hoping to order one for myself soon-  Top notch quality, quick turnaround, total class-act.

And now I discovered a putter brand that was 45min from where I went to university and they're out of business...I think.

Others have mentioned a ton of great brands! Piretti & Goodwood come to mind the most. If you have a little more coin to spend Lajosi, Byron and Olson all make top notch products and their quality is second to none! I have gone almost completely away from major putter brands like Scotty
