Why do a lot of pros lower their driver loft from standard?

I play an open faced driver that's 2 degrees open.  Loft is 9* so technically it's 8* with the open face.  Every degree open equals 0.5 degree of less loft.  I have very active hands on the down swing

I play an open faced driver that's 2 degrees open.  Loft is 9* so technically it's 8* with the open face.  Every degree open equals 0.5 degree of less loft.  I have very active hands on the down swing and can get flippy at times.  The open face helps keep me from having the face shut at impact.  I've played with open faced drivers for 12 years now.  Most touring pros play their driver and woods with open faces.

There are only a few people who can factually answer your question. However, we can speculate. Pros are extremely particular about what they want to see when they look down at the club. There are a few videos online of pros using sharpies on the topline of their drivers to give it a certain look. It's also a safe bet to assume that it is also for ball flight.

Yeah I look at the WITB's a lot and a lot have their drivers dialed down in loft and then did some reading into it and most do it to help from the dreaded hook miss. I'm going to try it I've had my PING G400 MAX 9* at 10 degrees and my miss has been draw/hook all year until I researched this. Just put it to 8.5 (down a half a degree) and will report back the results...excited though 😃

Most drivers sit closed in the "neutral" setting because it helps amateurs. Pros want to see it sitting square and they definitely hate missing left. Most current drivers that are lofted down and set "open" are actually square to the target and not actually open. That's how much the standard setting points left.

That's the stupidest thing ever. Every driver should sit perfectly square at neutral setting...smh

Yep - it's the same with irons too. Even most blades have offset and sit closed. Drives me absolutely nuts.

It's interesting how many pros like seeing some offset in their irons.  Even Nicklaus preferred having some.

Surprised me when I first saw a set of Muirfields
