Byrdie Golf Series II irons review

Alright, first time I've done a review on this site so please be gentle on me.   I found this little company out of Coeur D'alene Idaho called Byrdie golf that was selling forged players irons for under $300 bucks (https://byrdiegolf.com/).  I will admit, I wish the website had more information on the site about the irons but the owner, Nick Byrd, was more than willing to answer any questions that I had.  After asking more than a few questions, I ended up ordering a set of the Byrdie Golf Series II irons with the Apollo Steel shafts (only shaft offering) and a set of just the heads which I ended up shafting with KBS Tour 120s.   I didn't get a chance to take them to the course but I did get a chance to hit them at the range today.  So here are my thoughts:

Looks:

The heads look amazing and are definitely a players head.  Thin top line, short heal to toe, and minimal offset.  I mean, what else can you ask for in a players iron.  However, I wasn't a fan of the grips that came with the assembled set.  They felt good but were undersized.

Feel/Sound:

Going to break this down into two parts since I had two sets I was hitting:

Stock set with Apollo Stiff shafts:

No surprise to me I wasn't a fan of these shafts.  I hit them too high and they felt too lite.  The heads themselves felt good but I just couldn't get used the shaft and the under sized grip.

Heads with the KBS Tour 120s:

Alright, so this is where I was blown away.  For a set of forged heads brand new under 300 bucks, they felt amazing.  I've played Mizuno irons most of my adult life and to me, they felt just as good as a Mizuno iron.  I had my buddy also hit them as well and he was pleasantly surprised at how well they felt (he wasn't a fan of my shaft selection).  I was able to flight the ball as well as I know how, was able to hit draws and fades with ease.  I mean, there really wasn't much to complain about.  And even though I was hitting range balls, it was still a nice quiet muted sound coming off the face, not clicky at all.

Forgiveness:

I'll have to admit, I was hitting it pretty good today but on the ones I did miss, it wasn't harsh.  I could feel where the miss was on the face and because of the size of the head, I did lose some distance on off-center hits.  But overall, are they as punishing as my MP-67's, no but you still need to put a good swing on it.

Conclusion:

Not a fan of the stock shaft but at $300 bucks for a forged set of irons, the price is hard to beat.  If you are able to take the stock shaft out and put in something that you prefer, I would give these a look.  They look great and feel like a forged club should feel.

Once I get a chance to take these to the course, I'll update the review with how they performed out on the course.

Here are some pictures I took comparing them to Mizuno Mp-67s and New Level Golf 902's.  Pics are of the 5, 7 and PW.

So he said end of March or April he will have a lefty set of these. I am really interested considering the price for how they look. And I could play the hell out of them in 30 days.

<edit> the Series 1 is a copy of the Taylormade P7TW and look it.

I just got a message that lefty production starts tomorrow. 15 sets in the initial run, May delivery expected.

A set is being held for me because I think they look cool. It would also be cool to support another Pacific Northwest company. From Nike to BGD.
