Ones that I remember:

5 iron from 180 on the #1 handicap hole in my golf league for eagle. It was in the twilight late in the season so I could barely see it clear the water in front of the green, hop up towards the pin. We heard a noise but weren't sure until we got to the green. Probably the best shot I've ever hit. Too bad it was about 15 years ago!

A PW from about 130, unfortunately it was only a birdie since my drive was in the trees and I had punched out.

5 iron for my only ace on #18, about 185 or so uphill. Didn't get to see it go in. 😞 Nice to have a "walk off" ace though.

Another par 3 with a 6 iron, playing with my dad in a member/guest tournament. This one was for par! I had blocked my tee shot to the right towards a creek but no one saw it hit because we were looking into the sun. My dad was on the green (playing best ball) and getting a stroke so I was just going to go onto the next hole but was talked into hitting another one. So I drove back to the tee alone and hit what looked to be a much better shot as my third. My dad and the other two guys were watching from just off the green and cheered of course when that one went in. There was a car being given out as a prize for an ace on the hole, but that was for the previous day only. So as my dad said, "one day late and one shot late" from a car.

May have been a couple more in the ~30 years I've been playing. Been in the 6-8 handicap range over the past 8-10 years.

At the ripe old age of seventy there haven't been many for several years, but back in late July I got lucky. While playing with my son I holed out an eight iron from 130 yards out for eagle on our par five 17th hole. I finished with a bogey to shoot 78. My index was 9.0  back then. As colder weather has returned I'm up to 10.4 right now. Here's hoping I can catch lightening in a bottle again. It was my first eagle since my hole-in-one back in 1998.

Let's see. I had two holes in one within a couple of months in 1998. One was a 4 iron from about 188 at Headingley Golf Club in Leeds, England. The other was a 6 iron from about 170 at Bognor Regis down on the south coast. Subsequent to that I've holed one shot for an eagle on a par 4, that was right around 100 yards out. All my other par 4 eagles have been drivable greens where I've been on or chipping.

Then I've holed a 5 iron on the 8th hole on Walton Heath Old - that was from about 193. Downwind, couldn't see the ball go in, but got up there and it was in the hole. Albatross number one. That was quite exciting. Second albatross was a 3 iron from 202 on the 7th hole at Bethpage Black. Covered the flag the whole way, was on the green for a bit and then the ball vanished. Fist pump!!!

That's about it - I can think of a couple of other hole outs, but they were both in the 60-80 yard range.

40+ years with numerous hole outs from the deck (fairway).  Best fairway hole out was early 2000 from 165 with 8 iron.  Have more than my fair share of aces too (215 yards being the longest) - that's why we play this crazy game!

Best - 2 man scramble with my Dad first hole 400 yd par 4. Both skanked our drives and were in rough left about 185 yds. out. I plunked a 4 iron for deuce.  Unfortunately that was the highlight of the round, lol. Middle of the pack finish.

Last time was 2019 late in the year I plunked a nine iron from 130 yds. for eagle on a short par 4.

Usually good for one of these somewhere bi-annually. Didn't play at all in 2020 so looking for one next year.

Only one Ace, when I was 15 years old. 9 iron from 140-145ish.

However - hole outs for eagle? Ummm definitely upwards of 10, maybe somewhere in the 15 range, I can't remember them all. Last one was 2 years ago from 165 with a 7 iron, and had a wedge from 115 a couple months before that.

Humble brag/update -

Added one more on Christmas Day. 155 out, off the fairway and had to punch from under a tree branch. Hit it really well on exactly the line I wanted... ball ran up on the green but I was worried it may have rolled off the back.

After a confused few minutes not finding it one of the guys I was playing with found my ball...in the cup!

merry Christmas to me!

Hole In One

Le Diable - Mont Tremblant, QC - 12th hole 174 yards - 5 iron.

Hole out for birdie

Stonebridge CC - Goffstown, NH - 7th hole. After a bad bounce where my tee shot ended up in the hazard. Took a drop 105 yards 52 degree gap wedge.

Ton of close calls but I have never holed out for eagle.

53 years old. Have been scratch or below for 25+ years.

Hole-in-one: 1(?!?!) 185 yards at Brookside #2 course.

Eagle hole outs: At least two a year for 25 years. Probably 60+ in my life. Had several years in my 30's where i had four or five.

Three this year, last two (a couple weeks apart) were both 150ish with my 7-hybrid(!!!!)

Longest ever was 210

If you also included shots between 70 and 99 yards, I'm probably close to 100 in my life 70 yards and over.

Keep in mind, I've averaged 150 rounds a year for 25 years or so....

Aced a downhill 135 yard par-3 in Japan in 1994. 9-iron. I had birdied the previous 3 holes playing a weekly Wednesday match against a Japanese pro. He was so mad that he never said a word. Nothing. Nada. Zip. The stoic samurai act. I hit the flagstick with my 2nd shot on the following par-4 and it dropped next to the hole. I birdied the next two back-to-back par 5's. I was 8 under par for those 7 holes! I made another birdie on the 17th hole and he hooked 3 tee shots OB on the 18th. He paid off the bet on the 18th green and I never saw or heard from him again. We had played almost every Wednesday for over a year. I set the course record that day. Sometimes things just click and you can't miss. I didn't sink a putt longer than 10 feet all day. I was +3.

I was in a weekly 4-man scramble in Florida in 1985 and the skins pot had carried over to $34,000. Lot's of guys showed up for that Tuesday game! I holed about a 155 yard second shot for an eagle on a tough par 4 after our A player (I was a +3 then too and was the B player - that's how tough it was...) hit a great drive. and we thought we won the skin for sure. So, as we licked our chops thinking about dividing up the $34,000, someone in the group right behind us holed out also. Everyone watched everyone at those games to keep people honest. Can you believe it? We sure couldn't believe it. It had to be one of the most bizarre things I'd witnessed. It really deflated me and I thought I was snake bit.

I've holed a couple other ~100 yard shots, but nothing compared to those two.

As far as I can remember, zero.  0.3 handicap.

I banked one off of the raised cup from 260 yards on a Par 5 this spring, which under COVID rules was supposed to count at the time, but I'm unsure that it would have gone in under normal circumstances.

I've holed out plenty of times from within 100 yards though.

This blows my mind. I've been scratch-ish for about 20 years. I don't play anywhere near as much as you do anymore, but I've had I think 5 100+ hole outs in my life. 2 par 3s, 2 par 5s and 1 par 4 and that's it. You hear about holes in one being roughly 10k to 1, so every 10,000 holes you play, you should expect about one. You're better than typical for sure, so let's say it's 5,000 to 1. Hole outs from outside 100 yards must be roughly similar. 150 rounds is 2,700 holes. Have to think that many of those holes are going to be short 4s and par 5s where you're inside 100 on the approach. Let's very conservatively say 2,500 attempts. To have two a year is 1,250 to 1. Roughly speaking. That's an insane number to hole out! Your one hole in one is more what I'd expect!

Wedge players that hit flatter shots have more chances IMO

A hop and a little roll out has more chances than the high towering shot that sits near its mark or zips back

I have a 64 year old buddy, he has 7 aces.  Short hitter, 0-5 cap forever, carries 4,5,6h, etc .... flat iron shots and wedges that land short, hope once and roll like putts

YMMV, but those are my personal observations

I put hole outs from 100+ in the same category as aces. For the most part it takes skill to get it close but lots of luck for it to find the bottom of the cup. I've had 3 aces and an albatross from 240+ which was my lifetime best shot. I've had several hole outs but only one really sticks out. Short dog left par 4 and my first drive goes through the fairway OB. Retee and hit shot #3 to 125 yards out and swish the wedge for a sweet par. A few years earlier my buddy hit one in the lake on a 160yd par 3, reties and gets a par with his 3rd. He's never had a HIO.

Do most golfers have tons of hole-outs? As mentioned i have 2 longer than 90yds in like 15 years. Am I just incredibly unlucky?

I have a bunch of near hole in ones and kick ins. I came within an inch of an albatross TWICE each time from 250+

But the ball just never seems to actually go in

I hear you.  I'm a much better player now than the guy who made 3 Aces in 4 years, eons ago.  But in the subsequent 24 years - NOTHING - NADA - ZILCH.  Close a few times: that's it.  Holed out a few times, but I'd bet it's less than 5X in last 20 yrs.  Being a better player hasn't resulted in holing it out more often.

It’s funny to read that Jeff about albatrosses .. I had one way back when from 243 (so long ago it was persimmon) but last year alone I almost had two in one season, same hole

If you can rope hook around a corner you are left with 200-220 in .. green has a severe backstop so anything to back fringe can come back .. twice last year I had 7 wood shots go to back fringe and run back to within 6” of the hole, one short and one long

And we have another two tier green on our back 9 where a slammed high driver over the woods can leave 190 - 210 in, when the pin in on the front shelf, anything mid green runs back to pin, I’ve had a few over the last 15 years within a foot and have seen others as well .. the green designs seems to help on both these holes

The double eagle does seem more common nowadays as 500 yard holes in the right conditions leave short irons in for better players

No aces.

But from the fairway:

Diablo Creek (CA) 125 yards, nine iron, 3rd hole, par 5-Eagle

Diablo Creek 110 yards, pitching wedge, 18th hole, par 4- Eagle

Diablo Creek 130 yards, nine iron, 12 th hole, par 4 (from the wrong fairway after punching out of tree trouble)-Birdie

Deer Ridge (CA) 115 yards, pitching wedge, 12th hole, par 4-Eagle

Oakhurst (CA) 100 yards, gap wedge, 16th (?) hole, par 4- Eagle

I've only played there a few times. It's on top of a hill on the back nine. Not too sure on the hole number.

I think there have been some other ones that I've forgotten about but only hole outs from the fairway; no aces. One time off the tee at Fall River (CA) I flew one into the cup at 145 yards and it hit the flagstick and bounced out. Missed the birdie putt; Ha ha! This was on the last par 3 on the front nine.  I haven' t been there in a long time but it's hole 8, I think.

Definitely not, but I figured most scratch players would hole out at least one or two 100 to 120 shots a year. I guess not.

It depends too on where you live and how much you play. I play 60 rounds a year. Someone in Texas might play 150. So I'd do once every 2 1/2 years what Texas Jeff does every year
