Rickie Fowler is a cautionary tale in overexposing a superstar

To me, it is funny how people only equate success in golf with "wins". There is only one winner per week in a field of about 132-156 guys and only 50 tour events a year. So, it is increasingly harder and harder to win on tour especially when the talent is so deep. Just look at all the former PGA tour winners and even PGA Major tour winners on the Korn Ferry tour trying to get back to the PGA. Even just a couple of wins on the PGA tour is a major accomplishment. Fowler has 5 wins, so he is an exceptional player.

No doubt but his owgr chart has fallen off a cliff.  Anyone that looks at data charts of any type is going to ask, "what the heck is going on here?"

It's too bad Rickie Fowler isn't more of a "super achiever." He could learn a thing or two from the people on GolfWRX - who are all the greatest and most brilliant, high net-worth performers in their

great golfer .. and great guy by all accounts   Marketable ... good for him .. somebody has to make commercials with some humor tossed in   Not everyone wants to be Tiger or Jack o

Say whatever you want about his off course money commitments, you still have to admit that he is now 31 and it already past his physical prime (which is about 26).  Talent wise, Rickie is/was good, bu

WInning is what made Tiger great. Sure other tour pros are "successful" but it is winning that separates the cream from the rest.

Tiger, Jack, and the rest of the greats have stats that will likely never even be close to being touched because the talent is so deep now. You have multiple PGA winners and Major winners on the Korn Ferry tour fighting to get back to the PGA tour.

I have been reading words to that effect for as long as I can remember.  They were saying the same thing back in the 60s lol.  By the 90s there was no possible way that anyone could dominate like Nicklaus did because there were so many good players and the fields were so deep.

I think that it is possible that deeper fields actually make it more likely that a superstar competitor will dominate as none of the lesser guys are able to learn the habit of winning.

I don't think people realize how consistently good he was for so long, but just didn't win enough.  These were his end of year OWGR:

2014: 10

2015:  6

2016:  12

2017:  7

2018:  11

2019:  23

Current (per the article where you're starting to see the drop off in the last year): 52

He's still only 31 though.  The one poster makes it sound like this is baseball and  you really start declining after 30.  I would need to see the stats but I don't think that's true.  40 would be more of the magic age for that in golf although it might be a little different now with the length seemingly needed.

Yeah. Where are the numbers saying that golfers (or really most athletes) drop off substantially at 31? It all depends on their history, their makeup, and how well they take care of their bodies!  Most natural athletes won't see a drop-off in power until their 40's.

A certain Ichiro Suzuki had arguably the greatest pure hitting season in history at age 31, breaking George Sisler's all-time record.  It has always been said that hitting major league pitching is the single hardest skill in sports.

Cool, now do one for Spieth. 😏

I don’t get the crap being levied at Rickie. Is he supposed to turn down millions in endorsements? I think Sir Nick is just jealous that Fowler gets the big money while he is left with scraps like square toed shoes lol.

Has this been posted.  He sounds frustrated as well.  He changed coaches to try to get some of his old swing back, per this article (no idea why) but things obviously aren't going well.  It's golf, as we know this happens.  Don't know how it has anything to do with "overexposing a superstar."

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/rickie-fowler-slump-masters-world-rankings-arnold-palmer-invitational

After parting ways with coaches Butch and Claude Harmon and hiring John Tillery in the fall of 2019, a dip would be understandable given a swing overhaul, even one that’s trying to return Fowler to the roots of his swing and revive his artistic skillset. But the changes also have been admittedly difficult for Fowler to implement in tournament play on a consistent basis, especially in the midst of a season that seemingly never ends.

Other commitments, such as upwards of 25 to 30 corporate days a year for his sponsors, don’t make things any easier.

For Fowler’s part, his lack of results haven’t been due to a lack of effort, though. “It’s pretty much been all golf,” he said. “A lot of people have asked, have you been able to fish much at home? Not really. The days that I have off I just take completely off, and it’s been workout, therapy and golf.”

Talent is so deep now yet

Tiger cuts through them all on his way from #1000 OWGR to #5

Like Hannibal Lecter after a 3-month fast

Wins the Tour Championship

Beats them all to win his 5th Masters (including Rory, BK, DJ, JT, and Brysin, who all have zero Masters....combined at the time)

And he does it at 43 years old, with a shadow of his former driver length and wedge game

And a shot left knee

Oh, yeah, and he could barely walk 2 years prior and got his spine fused together.

Man, what TW 1.0 would have done to this lot ; )

Of course not.  But it comes at a cost.  When you're a top 5 marketer people are going to question why you don't contend and win at a high rate.  It'll be interesting to see if the marketing drops off when he starts missing majors.

While this thread is about Fowler there are some interesting parallels to YJS (sorry I love that acronym even though he's not so young anymore).

Spieth's issues have been dismissed as mental (right or wrong). Whereas we don't seem to know what's going on with Rickie.

Interestingly both of them started their tumble around similar life events.  Now I'll be the first to say that correlation does not equal causation but as humans we only have some much bandwidth.  When something takes up more time we tend to spend less time on other things.  We've all experienced it.  The first really serious girlfriend in school and grades may suffer. Get too involved in sports and grades may suffer.  Get too involved with work and your marriage may suffer etc.  Then there are external factors--- 2020 was tough for most of us. Maybe 2020 brought on private family issues for Rickie. We don't know.  It's just a discussion about a guy I like and wish the best for. If he said, "honestly guys I just don't want to spend as much time on my game anymore"  I'd say good for you Rickie, you need to manage your time as you see fit.

But back to the charts-- Whether it be a chart on company revenue, profit, production output, productivity or a golfers ranking, when I look at charts that looks like this I'd ask, "What happened?"

Maybe we should change the argument to how Rickie is one of the greatest of all time. Clearly a hall of famer, and maybe top 10 EVER. Not a mediocre career on the PGA Tour at all. Sure we can compare him to everyone from you and I, to the Nationwide guys, or anything else, but his accomplishments can't be held to the highest standard or even the slightest scrutiny without people screaming in his defense. Rickie is a .0001% golfer I have zero qualms about that, he has had a mediocre PGA Tour career though. And no I don't blame him for making millions in marketing, you go where the money is!

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
