Rickie Fowler is a cautionary tale in overexposing a superstar

He's won a few tournaments including a Players. He's made a bunch of commercials, including funny ones, which is rare in this day and age. He has made more money in the last 10 years than I will make in a lifetime. So I'm not sure what the problem is. Not everyone can win everything. He happens to be an average tour player with some gimmicks that make him a fan favorite. See also Camilo Villegas, etc.

"There are a handful of superstars for whom 2021 looms as a crucial time to prove something—McIlroy, Spieth, Koepka—"

What, exactly? Koepka has won more majors already (4) than most of the other guys on tour. Speith had one of the best stretches of golf ever in 2015, then it ended. Then later he bagged major #3. McIlroy lays claim to one of the greatest dismantlement of a US Open ever, some Masters collapses, etc, but managed to wrack up 4 majors.

Not everyone's career is a failure just because they did not become the GOAT. Moreover, this era seems to make it tough to win as often as before. So you're not going to see a Tiger, or it's going to be rare. 2 or three wins a year makes you elite in this era of golf. 7-10 career wins is not that bad; only 54 all time have made it to 17 wins. If Fowler can bag a major and a few more wins, great. If not he's done a lot more than most golfers ever will.

Agree in many ways. But looking at majors won statistics there are only 2 active players in the modern era that have won 5 or more majors. Phil (5) and Tiger (15). Faldo and Travino won 6 in the 1980-1990s. Anything more was from a long ago era with less competition. So for Rory, Jordan, Brooks thats a great career record in majors. I don't think we will see the best of the best winning 6 majors.

As for Rickie, he has always been marketable and makes a majority of his money that way. With it comes obligations. How did Tiger do it? Or Phil with a family? Perhaps they have a different drive.

Players in the past would endorse products for side money now the prize money is the side money.

And Rickie apparently chose Kardashian. But wait, his wife is Caucasian??? Oh well. Can’t blame a guy for doing what he wants. Oh wait, it’s GolfWRX, yes we can... Ok back at it.

Butch was ditched quicker by Rickie than Kanye was by Kim I guess.

Is Rickie happy right now? He’s rich and has a beautiful wife and plays on the PGA Tour. Doesn’t sound like it because his golf is not where he wants it to be. He has no time for a personal life or to relax because he’s too busy with golf, sponsors, and marriage. Cut something out. I suggest a few sponsors.

How much does Rickie’s drop in the WGR correspond with his ball change? I’m far to lazy to research this myself.

He won the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open using the TaylorMade TP5x, after switching from the Titleist ProV1.

Also 2nd at the Honda Classic.

T4 at Wells Fargo then T6 at the Open Championship in July 2019. After that things seemed to go downhill.

It's hard to blame the ball since he was able to win the Waste Management with it.

Unless you think the Pix ball is to blame. I'm not exactly sure when he started using it, but it's the exact same ball with different graphics on it.

That's the kind of fact based answer I was looking for. Thank you for your service.

When struggling it seems like everyone in the world has the answer but you.

No golfer is immune to the game's ups and downs.

This however, might be a case of the problem being fans and media more so than Rickie Fowler himself. He's such likable, respectful guy and no one ever has a bad word to say about him. Given his marketability we may have put unrealistic expectations on him given his ability level.

Wonder if he’s considering going back to Butch. He left in 2019 ranked like #7 and now is at #81

I doubt his practice time has changed dramatically. Butch reputation is for having a great eye. It’s possible there’s something very fixable that has developed in his swing that could be fixed.

Seems reasonable. I'm sure the intent was to get better. But at this point, it seems to be trending worse rather than a period of just getting used to changes. Even the body language sometimes suggests he's a bit fed up with his results.

Such a fine line when you're a professional who essentially represents a tiny fraction of the top 1%ers in the game. In reality he's probably not far off, unfortunately being "off" seems be be drastically magnified at this level.

Spieth fell from Number 1 all the way to at least number 82 I think.

This kind of thing happens.

It’s crazy to watch him too. He seems to always have these rounds with 2 doubles, 2 bogeys and like 4 birdies.

Today he shot 68 and is -2 headed for the weekend.  He seemed to find something - he looked a lot more confident than I’ve seen him in quite a while.

Its anecdotal but I just recall that Butch is known as a guy who can “see” things as far as a player just slightly getting away from doing the right things and see them in the context of that players individual swing.

Like, he doesn’t look to make players change swings to fit a certain swing model, he tunes them so they are doing the right things for the idiosyncrasies of their *own swing in ideal form.

Three 3 putts today and missed a couple of what should have been easy up and downs. His bunker play is nothing like it was. A blowup 8 over for the round. There's something more than just his swing going wrong. Hard to watch.

I like Butch Harmon. However what he says as a swing coach is not gospel. Before anybody says wait what about Woods. Woods won without Butch too.

Well Rickie has to be in excruciating pain. His last top 10 was in January 2020. This week will be his 26th consecutive event w/o a top 10.

Who cares, he’s rich

Rickie likely cares more than you think he does. No athlete likes to perform poorly in his given sport.

I know, I was being sarcastic. I like Rickie, but I have been criticizing him in this thread. His defenders keep claiming his slump doesn’t matter because he’s rich.
