7 Wood or 3 Hybrid? Both around 20-22 Degrees

I would think it be way easier to hit hybrids out of the rough than a 3 iron. But hybrids versus fairway woods out of the rough is a tougher comparison

A 4H definitely yes. But, I was frustrated to find I struggled to get a 3H out of the rough, after several people told me it would be easy.

For me at least, the 4W and especially the 7W clear the ball out of the rough much better than hybrids.

I carry driver(Ping g410 SFT), 3 wood(Cally Diablo Octane 15*), and hybrids from 18* to pw(46*). My entire set is hybrids, no conventional irons in my bag, as of this fall. Struggled with my irons(sold them before I got the hybrids), my hybrids are easy to hit, and instill confidence in every shot I make. I am a 20+ hdcp, but I have a feeling next year I will be playing to a lesser number. Put 2 new wedges (CBX2), 52*and 58* in my bag, with the latest tech and major forgiveness, pitches and chips are not so scary any more, no matter where I am making the shot from. The hybrids really look good at address, and feel great on full swings. Recent round (9 holes) I dropped 2 approaches(9 hy. at about 115-120 yds.) to within 6 ft. of the pin, and the rest were on the green within 20 ft., making about 1/3 the putts, and other putts were pin high about 2 ft. from the pin. Finished with a 44. My game is really looking up for next season.

I played most of the last 2 years with a 7-wood and a 4-hybrid.  My bag was Driver, 4-wood, 7-wood, 4-hybrid.  The 1st year they were Callaway Rogues and then last year it was Titleist 917/818.

What I found was that when I was on the fairway, My best success was playing the 4-wood and in the rough it was usually the 4-hybrid.  In those 2 years, I actually had very few times where the 7-wood played better for me than the 4-hybrid - especially out of the rough.

This year I trimmed it back to a TS2 fairway (16.5), TS2 hybrid (21.0) and a G410 Crossover (23.0).  I do not miss the 7-wood and feel that my bag is more versatile than its ever been.  The 4-hybrid definitely beat out the 7-wood for my game.

I don't find a 4 wood loft (16* to 18* loft) to be much good from a lie within the rough.

I definitely agree with you that a 3 hybrid (18*-19* loft) is not at all "easy" to hit good shots from a lie within the rough.

For my game , with a lie in the rough I swing one of the wedges or other short irons, rarely try a 6 or 5 -iron, but sometimes will swing a 22* loft 4-hybrid.

It depends on the lie. 4W will work from first cut, but 7W better from deeper.

If your fairway heads have movable weight screws, putting heavy weight in back can increase launch vigor from rough.

Also, I do a variation on your wedge-short iron. I'll do a "hinge and hold" shot, a 3/4 swing with a punch finish. 6i or 7i works best. In dry weather, it can produce a flyer that runs most of the way to the green.

Just wanted to say it was great hearing everyone's opinion about 7 woods and 3 hybrids.

I ended up picking up a Ping G410 7 wood with an Oban Tour Limited 100g 05 flex (originally built for Gary Woodland).  Couldn't be happier!

I still have my 3 hybrid just in case this experiment goes south and I wouldn't be surprised if one or the other goes up for sale in the classifieds forum lol

Interesting as I'm pretty much in the same boat .  According to Hoyle, as a higher handicap senior player with slower swing speed, it should be a 7W all day long, but it hasn't really worked out that way.  I certainly don't find it easier to hit than a corresponding hybrid or any longer for that matter.

In the 4W/7W combo I have often found that the 4W is the better half of that combo for me.  I can give no explanation why.  Played a 4W/3h/4h/5h combo for a lot of years with good success.  Going back to some variation of that next season as I have a 5h and 6 Dhy in inventory awaiting a reshaft..

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

there's a lot of threads on this, I'm a big fan of 7w with 4h behind it

This is what I do. I have always played a7w. Then hybrids came about. I tried them and ended up with the 7w 4h in my bag. Even though both clubs are similarly lofted I don't hit them the same.

I have a 3h and a 5h too but they stay home on most courses I play.

Best thing I did was go to the 4w,7w,4h setup in my bag.

I only recently started hitting hybrids and fairways with any consistency. I carry both a 7 wood and 3-4 hybrids because my ball flight is generally really low. I hit a nice high ball with the 7 wood, which I need in certain situations. If push came to shove I would probably pull the 3h and go with 7w-4h. However I feel more comfortable having all 3 in the bag.
