Driver shaft like a Modus 125 iron shaft

Recommended Posts

The Modus 125 iron shafts are like magic for me. So much so that I am curious if using a similar profile in driver could help me tame the big dog.

It seems the Modus 125 is a smooth traditional profile. I have a Fubuki Ax in my 3 wood which I also hit very well and I have learned that it’s also a smooth bend profile like a blue board.

So I’m going to order a TSI3 soon and want to go with a newer high end shaft that would fall into this category.

(I know everyone will tell me to get fit but I’ve wasted tons of time and money with fittings because I don’t swing the same when I’m hitting ball after ball with driver into a net or on the range as I do on the course. I could probably get into a groove with a junior driver if you give me a bucket to figure it out. What works for me after hitting 40 drives in a row doesn’t correlate to hitting it 10-14 times under pressure in an actual round of golf.)

So all that aside what are some suggestions given my success with the other shafts listed above? The Ventus has long had my attention but doesn’t seem to have a real comparable profile. I’m looking at a 70 S most likely.

I think you might be looking for a mid launch/low spin shaft.  If you want the Ventus line, then the blue 70s would be your best bet.  You did mention the old blue board and the MCA BF 70s is the updated version.  It launches a tad higher and spins a little more than the Ventus blue but that's because it has a softer tip.  Can't go wrong with either shaft.

I agree with the guys above in that the most distinctive part of the Modus 125, and the one you're most likely feeling, is the softness in the lower mid and stiffening in the tip, which is a classic trait of most "Blue" Profiles. The Diamana Kai'li would easily be the best bang for your buck option, and the Ventus Blue or the Diamana BF/TB would be your best modern options, with the Ventus Red being a great choice as well, and arguably the closest match. Others to include would definitely be the Graphite Design AD-BB/XC/DI.

EDIT: It also should be mentioned that when attempting to match these sorts of things (iron and wood shafts) for a specific feel reason, you need to keep in mind all the other factors that could be contributing to the "magic" you're feeling, including things like length and weight.

I've never really thought about iron shaft and driver shafts having the similar characteristics, but after switching to the Modus 125s this summer from the DGTI s400, the 2 shafts that have been most consistent for me have been the Diamana D+ 70s and the stock Diamana that came with my SIM.

Both shafts are set 1 click lower than standard, and the ball flight is pretty similar.  The D+ is a bit flatter, and it's one that I use when it's warmer outside and I can actually loosen up more.  The Diamana that came with the SIM seems to be working out well for me with the colder weather because it's lighter and higher torque.

I've tried the Elements Earth 7f4 and the Aldila Tour Green 75s, and they're both pretty good.  The Earth just spins a bit too much, and I don't want to play it any lower than 1 click on my driver.   The Tour Green is also good, but if it's really cold, I have a hard time loading it.  I'll get a lot of contact low on the face, and it comes off a bit spinny.  I'm still pretty accurate with it, but not as long as the 2 Diamana shafts.

Diamana BF in the driver is worth considering. I’ve only played it in the fairway woods, but I’ve liked and tended to get on well with some of the other blueboard options mentioned. Thinking about getting one myself to test.

I’d potentially rule out the Atmos TS Blue for the driver - I found that to launch and spin a bit more than my Tensei CK Pro Blue (which can float on me a touch). I’m 108-110 CHS.

I also managed to get hold of a Speeder Evolution IV 661 - and this felt in that sort of space too. Only hit on the range so far.

Modus is stiff/soft/stiff which is in line with the "blue" shafts out there like Diamana blue. PX Evenflow Blue. Aldila blue shafts like VS Proto, XVS6 Voodoo, NKXV Blue, Synergy Blue, etc.

Nippon also makes graphite shafts with the same profile as the irons, the Nippon Regio Formula MB (gold color) is the same profile as the Nippon Tour125.

I love the Tour125 and I find the Evenflow Black line to be very smooth, perfect kick/feedback and still low enough spin. I play them in my driver and FWY.
