Best front nine you have had followed by collapsing on the back nine.

Glen Annie GC about 6 or 7 years ago.

As a 5 HC I birdied 3,4,5,6 & 8.  Doubled #7.    32 on the front. As a five!  I think my previous best was four birdies in a ROUND.

Well, you know where this is going. 32 on the front was so far outside of my golfing identity and belief system I was destined to rectify things on the back nine and bring  my golf world back into  equilibrium.

Trying hard and with intention on every single shot on the back, I shot a 48.   OB's, dry creeks, water on 18 - you name it.

Ah, the beauty of self imposed limitation...

As a 14 HC I once shot even par through 9. Made the turn feeling great. Chipped in for birdie on the 10th. Scrambled for par on 11. At the end of the round I had shot an 84 on a par 70 course. I only shot 2-3 over on 14-18 that day. The whole ordeal was on 12 and 13. To this day, I don't think I've shot par on those holes. I don't remember exactly but I think I shot something like a triple on 12 and 9 over on 13 with 4 balls OB from the tee. One of these days, I'll figure those two holes out.

I don’t have a personal story for this, thankfully. Probably due to the fact that I play terribly on the front.

However, I have a buddy I play with every week and I usually give him 11 shots. He beat me straight up by 2 shots on the front, and proceeded to lose by 14 on the back to give me the win for the day by 1.

I usually reverse the order. 45-35. When I’m playing with someone who is shooting way lower than their handicap I’m waiting for the wheels to come off. An honest handicap has a way of shooting up and ruining the party.

it's almost always the opposite for me. haha.

I have numerous stories of shooting like 45's on the front followed by 35's on the back. Start threads about that LOL

Houston National, probably 10 years ago. I was playing to around a 5-6 handicap, and had never shot a round (or 9 for that matter) under par. Made the turn at 35 (-1) and was elated. Had a single beer at the turn with my buddies who had been drinking the entire front 9. Proceeded to put up a lovely 53 on the back. I dont think I've ever been more disgusted with a round of golf as I was with that one. 18 stroke difference from front to back. I wanted to puke.

I can't remember ever doing this. If I have a good front nine, I shoot a low round! Definitely tend to work in reverse, with a poor front and a good back. HOWEVER, I do have a story of a collapse over just the final few holes.

39-56, off a handicap of 9. It's fair to say that the back 9 which finished 7-8-9 was the worst of my adult golfing life.  It was all down to an attack of giant carved slices off the tee from 12 onwards resulting in multiple lost balls (and a mental meltdown which for some reason stopped me from benching the driver).

Sad to say, it was also the last round I ever played on the course I grew up on. The club closed last year after over 120 years.

On a lesser level of collapse, I played Royal Troon for the first time last year, on a cold, windy day.  40 to the turn had me dreaming of a sub-80s round on an Open course. 48 back...

Playing in the state mid-am a few years ago at Cordillera Ranch.  I'm in the afternoon wave on day 1, and even or 1 under was leading after the morning round.  I birdied 9 for a 34 (-2) on the front and was leading the tournament.  Back nine was bogey, bogey, double bogey, bogey, quadruple bogey, bogey, triple bogey, par, par for a 49 (+13).  4 balls in the water, an unplayable lie and a 3-putt.

I don't check scoreboards anymore.

I don't have specific f9/b9 collapse story but I'm sure it has happened to me. As for following a great 18 hole round, I will never forget the time I first shot under par in a tournament, 69, and followed it up with a 87. I was just shy of turning 15. One day everything felt so natural and the next day it was like the train fell off the tracks. Playing in the final group, playing with older kids, the mind is a powerful thing.

A few years back I made the turn at -6 (with a bogeys on #1 and 2) and then followed that up with a +2 (38) on the back nine.

I still shot 68 and 8 shots worse isn't as dramatic as a lot of your scores, but coming off 2 eagles and 4 birdies in the 7 hole stretch of 3-9 it was a real kick in the nuts.

2001, one of my first tournaments in high school at a course I liked.  Shot -3 on the front 9, feeling great and ready to go out and get my first win.  There was a backup at the turn; a group on the tee and two in front of us waiting to go.  I ate a hamburger and waited.  I shot +7 on the back 9.

I was devastated and it destroyed my confidence for the rest of that season. I'll never eat a hamburger, or anything heavier than a PB+J, during a round ever again.

When I was playing my best in a number of years I was shooting in the mid 80's fairly regularly with dreams of breaking through to the 70's.

Shot a 39 on the front and followed it up with a 45 on the back. The back 9 included a dreaded snowman on a par 4 and a triple on another par 4 hole. It was a sad, sad day indeed.
