Spieth Working with Butch

Not exactly the same points in their swings.

One of the things that held me back in my own swing was this incorrect belief of a "more stable club" face held open etc.  Chase Cooper finally exorcised those demons by showing me about fifteen tour players that ALL look like Tiger, letting the club fly.  The "leveraged" "no roll" fallacy is doing a lot of damage to a lot of golf swings.  Thank goodness I am not striving for that stuff anymore and my scores dropped to a plus handicap finally.  Same for Chase, he said it kept him from making the cut at Q school because he kept pulling wedges, all due to the face pointing left with that type of release.  He could show it with a magnetic rod attached to the face.  It is the same as having the ball above your feet.  The face points left.  Tigers release is better.

I wasn't advocating for one thing or the other, just noting that Spieth actively holds off his release which is the opposite of what Butch seemed to be suggesting.

It seems to be an interesting mixed bag with regards to releases and what they correlate with. I agree that many tour pros look like Tiger above with a "full release", but there does seem to be a bit of a trend towards something between Spieth and Woods in a more "neutral" release. Woods has always described himself as pretty right hand dominant and "handsy", and can get a little "flippy" with the driver like pictured above, although flippy might be overstating it a touch. I would argue though that while Tiger can straddle the line around a "full release", the aforementioned more "neutral" release seems to be more the trend these days, with the "hold off" release still being popular as well. The way I personally define it is a hold off release sees the right hand slightly under the left after impact, a neutral release sees the right hand around even with the left, and a full release sees the right hand on top off/overtaking the left.

Watch Speith's right knee on the backswing - his legwork, specifically knee work, not great at all. I bends back rather than stay inward, flexed and solid I think it was Simon Holmes on Sky who emphasised this fault a few weeks back.

Are you sure he phrased it that way (or maybe I’m not understanding what you said)? I’m pretty sure that most pro’s these days try to extend their trail leg in the backswing i.e. their trail knee will lose flex, although not to the extent of locking out.

It's more than that, the right knee moves in a very strange way indeed. It sorts of bends to the right - looked very odd when they showed it.

Dave Shedlowski of Golf Digest confirmed that Spieth is working with Butch. Don’t know if he completely made the switch or is getting another set of eyes still.

He needs a new perspective, whether it's Butch or someone else, it doesn't matter how great the teacher is, you can get in a rut, he needs to shake things up.  He may very well be working with Butches son as well.

Think it's entirely possible that Spieth may be following a similar arc to David Duval. Both were incredible talents that reached the pinnacle of their professions despite elements of their technique being decidedly unorthodox.

Obviously there were other factors at play like injuries, but Duval has been very open about coming to the realization that he wasn't going to find lasting fulfillment in golf immediately after winning the Open in '02 and instead began to pour more time and energy into his family life. I'd be surprised if there aren't parallels there for Spieth. Perhaps the view from the top of the mountain wasn't all he thought it would be either, and now his priorities have changed and will continue to do so.

Will be fascinating to see if he can rediscover anything like his peak form, and if the "want to" required is there or not.

Interesting... but not really seeing it unless Spieth plans on adopting a bunch of kids.

Chunky DD was an awesome stick, then he hit the gym getting obsessed with TW including chasing the swoosh.  That was beginning of the end.  Then mix in health issues and vertigo and all of the sudden snowboarding with the family is a lot more fun than golf.

Spieth?  He just doesn't have the confidence.  Chasing distance when he didn't need it, gets distracted just enough the 25 foot bombs stop dropping, more confidence lost... Vicious cycle.  He is headed down the road of irrelevance on the golf course similar to DD, but a pretty different road.

Simple, the guy on the bag believes he should be the star watch their body language, replace him, let Spieth get back to playing his game without trying to please his buddy.

If he fired Mikey. He’d have to change his number it would ring so many times. The caddie isnt the issue . It’s between Jordan’s ears.  Fixable, but that’s the issue

This^ Spieth's swing has always looked funky. A lot of Jordan's problems are head related. He led the tour last year for a while in scoring on Thursdays and Fridays. Too bad they had two more days to play.

I just listened to Butch on some Sirius show, Breed maybe?

I liked what he said. He said Jordan would get the club too far inside then Lift at impact and not complete the turn. If you watch his swing that's exactly what he was doing. Maybe Jordan can get back a little of his mojo ..

When Spieth played CJ Cup in Vegas this past year he stopped by Butch's place and sought his opinion on his swing issues and what Cam/Jordan were doing to fix them.  Apparently this is not uncommon with tour players.  Butch mentioned a couple of small things he would rather see Spieth doing, but concurred that what Cam/Jordan were working on was the right direction to take for the bigger problems.  My summary of a Golfweek or Golf.com blurb I saw this morning.

I’m confused as well. Reporters say it happened while Butch says it didn’t. I’ll believe Butch until photo evidence shows otherwise.

Yep. Same one I saw.  But who believes anything reported anywhere nowadays?!  Lol

I think the most disappointing thing I’m hearing from any of it is two fold.  1.  Cam didn’t seek out a second  set of eyes for his player and 2.  Everyone - butch included seems to be more worried about stepping on cams toes than fixing Jordan’s issues.  Cam can survive Jordan leaving.  Jordan can’t survive not fixing this. Not in the golf world.
