Most Holes Played in One Day?

GoletaGolfer

Recommended Posts

In 1996 I ran a charity event for the American Cancer Society called "The Longest Day of Golf."

Played 117 Holes in exactly 12 hours. As a twosome. No breaks. Ate and peed on the fly. Averaged 1:52 per round.

Thought we were hot stuff until we found out that night that another group of guys in the event (4 some) played 133 holes in less time.

One of them was a 55 YO accountant (non athlete) that reported he could not walk for the the next two days.  🙂

Use to play 72 holes EVERY Saturday and Sunday for years. My body couldn't do that anymore. Now we do 45 - 54 holes every Saturday and Sunday.

81 holes, walked and carried the bag. Teed off at 6 AM and putted out a little before 8 PM. About 30 years ago while still young, just the thought of it now makes me sore.

Wow, I'm a total wuss. 🤣

I have not had an opportunity to play more than 18 but rarely play more than 9. I guess now that I am a member I could go out at dawn and play until dark. But I would need a cart, I'm not walking that far.

72, probably. But that was back in high school, we would play 2 rounds before lunch and then two after. Probably a couple hours per round, walking.

Nowadays if I could, I wouldn't. I generally find that if I over play or over practice I start burning in bad habits or grooving a tired swing. Generally not a good long-term strategy imo.

190 holes...yes I know that sounds ridiculous but it was a charity golf marathon at a course I was very familiar playing. I was in college and there were probably 12 people playing, all played as singles. I did putt everything out but obviously did not keep track or care about my score each round.

Tried to reach that 200 number but it was a hot summer day and I legitimately could not put a full swing on the ball at the end. The next day was brutal.

54. And I carried. I was in mid 30s. I could barely walk the next day.

Shot my then-best during the middle 18.

During that summer, I played 9-18 holes everyday. I think that 54-hole occurred on the last Sunday of that summer. I definitely made sure I ended the summer on a high note.

Never did more than 18 a day since.

45 a few times, but every time another 9 seemed too much.

Now 27 is really as much as I'll play and that's unusual.  These days much more likely to go home after an 18, or just get in a nice relaxed 9 - if the elbow allows, I play 5 times a week, sometimes 6 during the season so I don't have any days where I feel like I have to get in lots of holes.

Wayyyy back in the day, my buddy and I would play 72 every few weeks or so.  We'd play 36 on course A in the morning, then hop over to course B and get 36 more.  We were riding in a cart of course.  No way could either of us walk that, man I can't even walk 18 anymore.

These days I struggle to make 36, which is almost every Saturday.

101 walking and carrying. Played every hole under the ROG. It was a very long day.

203 riding playing under the ROG. This was actually tougher as you were always on the go.

Most I have see is over 300. He had 2 or 3 carts going in front of him taking care of bunkers or anything he needed and he was liberal about the rules - putting with pins in before you could. One of his tricks was playing two or three holes at once when it made sense to do so as he had it down to a science after trying to get over 300 for years. An example of this is if a tee box was naturally near a fairway of another hole, he would hit a tee shot as he drove by. Then finish the hole he was playing and not have to back track to the next tee box.

You guys are warriors.  I did 36 holes maybe 20 rounds.  Last time I did 36 holes was last year and I just about keeled over after I got home.  At the time I was on dialysis and played at Monarch Links for my birthday.  Probably wasn't the brightest idea, but I had fun.

When I was a kid, the local course (long gone now ... RIP Pine Burr) had a $100/year deal for unlimited play for juniors. During the summer, mom would drop me and a buddy off on her way to work in the morning and pick us up on her way home. So yeah, we'd play from 8am to 6pm damn near every day, stopping only for a sandwich and soda at lunchtime.

So ... I dunno. A lot.

  • 2 weeks later...

81 holes when we were juniors......... can't remember even being tired. Walking and carrying our own clubs.

I also remember playing 45 holes (July 2012) at Karachi Golf Club (don't ask!), no carts and 40+ degrees C. I was like a zombie the following day.

72 holes is really no biggy. I do it walking at-least once per year(nearly 50).

If you are a decent golfer you are going to make about 40-50 full swings per round - about the same as a bucket of balls. Most regular golfer have no trouble hitting 200 full shots over 12 hours. So let's not worry about that. If it is an issue then hit 100 balls for practice on days you golf for a month.

So the challenge is really about walking/being on you feet. Here is the funny part - a well planned 72 is about as much effort as poorly planned 36 as far as walking/your feet and legs are concerned.

Standing for an hour is harder on your legs then walking on a flat surface for an hour as walking prevents any one muscle group to be over exerted. As a result walking 36 in 4 hours is potentially less tiring than playing 18 in 4 hours.

On days I do 72 the first round is around 6am it takes under 2hours. It actually feels more like an extended warm up. The second round it the first regular time of the days and is again in around 2 hours. Its now 10:00ish. I grab a shower and fresh clothes and eat something. Then play from 11am- 2:45pm in the regular pace of the course. Come in have a later lunch and head out around 4 for a very mellow evening loop.

Feels bout the same as playing a slow 36 as it is about 10 hours of walking.

I played 72 holes one day on a pretty hilly course walking and wanted to die at the end.. lol

These were back to back to back etc. From 18th green straight to the first tee.
