What’s the Worst Feeling in Golf?

I'm standing over the ball and something doesn't feel right. I'm second-guessing my club selection; or second-guessing my shot selection; or on a tee shot I'm thinking my ball might be teed up a little too high, or a little too low. I know I should back away from the shot because it doesn't feel right, but I swing anyway. It's a terrible shot. I wonder how I could be so stupid.

Yep. When you know it feels wrong, you swing anyway, and you prove yourself right.

That little click you hear when you are trying to hit a high soft one, and you know you are going to be 20 yards further from the hole than where you started from.

After thinking longer, shooting a 78 in the final round of a tournament, only to follow it up with a 109 in the first round of the next tournament was also pretty bad.

Sounds about what a 12 hc sometimes does. I am also about the same hc as you, and I shot an 81 in tournament play and about a week later I shot a 105. Golf giveth, and golf taketh away!

Thinking your emotions or actions may have negatively affected others in your group.  I have done stupid 3 times that I know of in 40 years plus of playing, that probably had an effect on others.
I regret those three times of not having control of my anger.
I am fortunate to have a lot of people to play golf with and I believe it is because I try to be courteous and respectful to others, play at a brisk pace, and respect the course.
Those few tantrums where I snapped a shaft over my knee haunt me a bit!  Not what I want to be!!

From experience in early January

I was in a regional tournament on a course I didn't know well, hit a decent drive from a high tee box that landed in what I thought was the middle/right of the fairway, but actually rolled somewhere out of sight in a brushy swampy area that cut into the fairway (possibly plugged?). 3 minutes of looking yielded nothing and I had to walk back up the hill with my 5 wood, ask the guys on the tee box to stand down while I re hit. They had thought we had all moved on sort of around the corner to the green and had started to hit while I was below the hill. The first one hit (nice drive right in the middle) and the next was just going through his waggles as my head crested the rise (spooking him a bit). It was not their fault the hill blocked my motions, it clearly looked like I had walked to the path and was going to head to the green. The foursoume behind them, was watching from further up the hill while they waited. The next hole is a drivable Par 4 so the entire field backs up in this location.

I fully sent my next ball into roughly the same area as before , but more right into the brush and realized I should hit a provisional and had NO BALL in my pocket. In an effort to save time I sheepishly had to ask one of the guys waiting for the tee box for a golf ball. He kindly took a brand new TP5 out of a sleeve, under my breath I stated "TP5 number 3, provisional, unmarked" WHICH I HOOKED INTO THE LEFT TREES OOB! He got out another ball and was like "Here you go", but I just said "I think I have maxed out here." and made the walk of shame back down the hill. I didn't care if the tournament required you to finish every hole, I would take the DQ at that point.

I found the second tee shot, and left him a couple new TP5s (partner was playing them) on the next tee box with "THANKS!!!" written on a scorecard. Even though we are just a bunch of old guys playing golf for fun, it was like being in a bad dream. I was laughing by the time I caught up with my group a the green, but on the way down the hill I was thinking I might want to try out another hobby.

Part of me wants to say - Puking a big lead in something that matters to you.  .  It just seems to be an out of body experience, where you know It’s happening, but can’t really stop it.

but truthfully , it feels worse to never have contended at all.  Feel thankful to have had that feeling , and look forward to getting there again and closing it up.

When you've hit a ball that's heading right toward someone. You yell "fore", but it's just so terrifying. It always screws me up for a hole or two.

my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I, couple friends were traveling to the UK a few years ago, and we were fortunate to stay a few days in Edinburgh. i dreamt of playing 9 at a scottish course, just for the principal of doing it. So I called a local course and booked a (very affordable) tee time for 9 holes, late in the day. That was the only timeslot my buddy and I had when we could play - about 4pm on a weekday. We scarfed our lunch down, and prepared to grab an uber and head to the course. Well anticipation had been building a few hours, and we were crazy excited, when the course called me with some bad news. They close the clubhouse at 4:30p, and needed all rented clubs back by then.

I tried to figure out ANY way I could still play. I asked the guy if I could pay his hourly rate to stay and keep the clubhouse open while we played nine, and it wasn't possible. I'm not usually one who gets very disappointed, but i was deflated for a good two hours lol - just the excitement of getting to check Scottish golf off the bucket list, and having that taken away at the last minute was the worst

that and duffing a greenside chip that you need to up and down, and felt confident about
