Wedge Preference question

I’ve been having some weird dark thoughts on wedges... I’m vaguely convinced game improvement pitching wedge and gap wedge with more traditional sand wedge and lob wedge makes the most sense...

Plenty of good options for a sand and lob wedge... vokey, Cleveland and Callaway all make good stuff.

Moving from Vokeys to Mizuno T-20, partly to match MP-20 blade irons. The transition from the blades to the T20s is really seamless. I also like the clean look (I remove paintfill) of the Mizunos, and they feel less clunky and heavy -- more nimble. The Vokeys (SM8) feel softer (counterintuitive, because T-20s are forged) but I like having a precise sense of impact on every strike. Vokeys are soft and forgiving but give none of that feedback.

Any love for Maltby wedges here? I recently got GW and SW in the M-Series+ Tour model, and LW in the lower bounce Tour Grind MG. All with DG Tour Issue Black Onyx shafts for $80 apiece. I love them so far. I really wanted all black wedges, otherwise I may have gone with the TSW which looks even better.

In my wedges, I like to have a low bounce LW, a high bounce SW, and a mid bounce GW. That way no matter where I play or what the conditions are I have an option.

Depending on the course and weather I'll switch out wedges to provide the right bounce for the conditions before the round.  I like your idea of mixing them up in your bag when you're not sure what the actual course conditions will be like.

Some GI and most players iron sets don't offer a sand or lob wedge so my feeling is if you have to add a "different" type of club to the bag, might as well be a traditional wedge.  Even on sets that offer SW and LW, you typically replace wedges more often than irons, so it's easier to just stick with dedicated wedges than try to find replacement clubs from iron sets they don't make anymore.

I’m a pretty decent ball striker and don’t have any issues hitting my wedges, but I ordered a gap wedge to go with my T100S to at least give it a try. I chip and pitch a lot around the green with the pw and it’s fine playability wise. My gap wedge doesn’t need to be real versatile as it’s primarily played with a square face. I have the versatility in my sw and lw to alter the face if need be.

Interesting. I’m not that advanced with my feel for wedges, but that’s an interesting concept to keep in mind. All my wedges are Standard Bounce and chipping within 20-120 feet is the area I have to spend the most time on improving.

Another thing to consider is sole width too. I try to have a wider sole as bounce goes down to a narrower sole as bounce goes up. The biggest thing I try to tell people is to try to never let the leading edge hit the ground before the middle of the sole. Doing this really let’s the bounce work.

Why not do a wedge fitting?

I have a 'golf school' (lessons, fittings etc) about an hour from me. I did a full bag fitting there and the wedges were as much fun, interesting and I think more beneficial than the irons.

Is it worth exploring the 'fitting' rather than just chase 'brand' or product recommendations?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
