Backyard Chipping/Putting Green

Recommended Posts

We've been thinking about getting a chipping/putting green for the backyard around 500 sq. feet. Wanted to get people's thoughts who have one and if they would do it again. If your in CA and the company did a great good would appreciate references.

We really are looking for something that we can pitch/chip to up to 40 / 50 yards and hold the greens.

Thanks

+1 on this. We are getting ready for an interior remodel of our home. In addition, the backyard is getting redone and I plan to install a DIY hitting "cage". Going to pay someone for the putting/chipping green.   My research indicates you are going to spend $15-$40/sq foot for the putting green. We are looking at a 20'x40' (800 sq. ft) putting green.  I'm in NorCal.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

We are in the Monterey Area and used Southwest Greens Northern CA West (San Carlos) 2 1/2 years ago.  Jose Salamanca (the owner) and his assistant did an excellent job on our 400 sq. ft. putting green with 4 cups.  Had them match stimp at our home course 10-11.  I would definitely use Jose and his team again.  The area rep I worked with was Greg Amsler.

Yah we installed one a few years ago.  It measures about 650 SF with 5 holes.  If you asked me prior to covid, I would say it was the biggest waste of money ever.  My kids basically used it for gymnastics and to play soccer.  Since covid, the kids use the green and our hitting net everyday.  The guys I used did an amazing job.  I think it took them less then two days to complete.  I highly recommend.  Let me find their number and PM you.  Here are a few pics.

Is it receptive to chipping/pitching.  We are considering one and have enough room in back yard for a 35 -40 Yard Pitch "tee".   I've sketched out to have the longer part of the green line up, but not sure if these things are realistic in receptiveness or if it just bounces off....

Ours is fairly receptive, but you aren't going to get a ball to check up super hard.  I wanted the green to run fast.  It is perfect for bump and runs though.  A friend has his made from a different material and the ball checks a lot more, but the surface isn't as smooth and consistent for putting.

Do your kids play any other sports?  We also added a 35' Jugs Sports batting cage when we redid the backyard.  My girls are in travel/rec softball. My oldest used the cage when she experimented with middle school soccer for a year.  I also ordered a 10x15 golf net on Amazon and dropped it from the middle crossbar.  I use it to practice chips focusing on contact hitting off a realfeel golf mat.  I practice chip distance control at the course.  It could be used for full swings which my family practices.  I don't like full swings into nets bec I don't get flight feedback.  The SWG top tier product at the time had a 5mm cushion material placed between the base and the green to be "more receptive" to chips/pitches.  We did not add this since I just wanted to concentrate on putting practice.

So if you have the room or willing to sacrifice putting green size, the cage could be an option.  The uprights are inserted into a sleeves in the ground so they can be easily removed and sleeve capped in case someone in the household complains about it.  If they still complain, you can string some bistro lights from cross bar to cross bar or use them to anchor mesh screens for shade when entertaining guests in the backyard.

I thought about building a putting green into the backyard but after everything was said and done It was kind of pricey to build a putting green.  I sold the house instead and moved to a house on a course.  You guys in california could buy on a course like this and have tons of cash to spare.

I had to look around a lot but eventually found the place we are in.

No need for a putting green if you have this as your backyard.

As far as organized sports, we play Little League and golf.  Since COVID, tennis, skateboarding and tossing the football around.  Hoping to have a spring baseball season in 2021. My yard has plenty of room for a 20'x40' green and a 15x25 hitting cage.  Still have room to spare after that.

Still doing research on what synthetic putting green to put in so that it gets as realistic feel as possible.  Whatever we choose, I'll need to go inspect one of their prior customer installs.

In my experience you can either go with a realistic putting/chipping green or a realistic pitching green. Like @kekoa mentioned it's tough to find something synthetic that can do both.

My neighbors used to have one for putting/chipping and although it's neat to have, I know they wouldn't do it again for three reasons. 1)After a few months the novelty of it sort of wears off and you don't use it as nearly as much as you did at first, 2) it doesn't exactly help with your home value it actually could decrease it, and 3) although not as much as something like a pool, it does require upkeep and maintenance to keep it functional so I'm not sure how much time or money you're willing to dedicate to that.

Insert Flight scope into that hitting cage.  Might have to redo the netting, but that would be an awesome setup outside.  Flight scope and an Ipad.

Yes that is the plan and I have a Mevo+ on order.  No hitting cage is built yet as we need to get the home remodel done first.
