Re the t100.....I've never played a titleist iron so have nothing to compare to.....curious to what it compares to at address as to its size?

The T100 is a bit on the smaller side but not intimidatingly small.

Very interested in this thread. I play Ping iE1 irons but tried iBlades and hit the iBlade long irons better (and longer) than the iE1. I hit the iE1 long irons ok but shorter than I would expect and the yardage gaps bunch up in 6-5-4 irons. I hit the iE1 short irons extremely well though (7-gap). Considering trying a thinner sole iron set this season like T100s or similar. 107mph driver, 90mph 6-iron and 2hdcp for reference.

I am very steep and did well with the V sole on the 745s for few seasons. I switched to the 2019 P790s towards the end of last year and played my best golf ever with them. In theory they are thicker on the bottom but i still get through the turf with them very well.

I take big divots and do better with thinner soles ... 40 years experience and a lot of iron sets

wide irons are atrocious for me in firm conditions fwiw

Which courses get that firm up here.  Collectively, the GTA has the most lush and best conditions for the amount we have in a relatively small area as anywhere in the world unless it's Banty's or a drought.

Locally, I have played many GTA courses in the last 6 years in rock hard conditions, not that often to be fair but you can get high and dry tight lies even in ideal conditions on great courses

Wyndance, The National, King Valley, Glencairn, Blue Springs, Rattlesnake etc etc

Scotland .. don't get me started, you need a different action with wedges there

Nice handle BTW gwelfgulfer .. I played out of Cutten for a few years when I played for U of G

Yeah for sure a couple of the CL courses can get burnt out as they have no trees on them, add in Greystone as well....  Surprised BS got that tight, much more tree lined and shaded and never really got that firm for me (I'm a digger).

Might be changing the handle up shortly as we're gearing up to move to the East Coast, but this whole thing has pushed it back a bit (was going to spend 3 weeks out there looking around last Spring), and quarantining for 2 weeks before we go look at houses is a bit lame...  But Having Crowbush and Dundarave only 15 mins away is going to be pretty nice, and cheap...

I was listening to one of our podcasts with TXG and they were discussing how Johnny was having a difficult time hitting a long iron that had a wider sole. Some tour reps said that different types of swings were better fitted for a specific sole size and shape. Shallow swings were better off with thinner soles and a steeper attack angle can game a wider sole if they would like to. The discussion is at the 30 minute mark.

Got me scratching my head. I am more steep so I can get away with playing something wider but I admit it has not been a slam dunk. Hard to find a thinner sole 3 and 4 iron that has significant speed off the face. Your thoughts?

I'm on the steeper end and have spent the last year dumping all my wide sole clubs. I played a 54/14 F grind SM7 that felt like it was stopping me from making the swing I wanted to make and getting the turf interaction I wanted and was expecting. Felt like it didn't want to move through the turf at all and would do anything to stay out of it.

I had the same problems playing driving irons in the 4 and 5 iron. They didn't feel like they were helping me, just impeding me from making contact the way I want to because they were harder to get in the turf.

To me the V grind sole(Srixon/Ben Hogan) is the best for a digger. Gets in and out of the turf as quick as possible but doesn't feel like it's forcing my swing away from its natural path.

Does anyone actually benefit from a thicker sole?

I just thought it was there to lower the CG and assist with launch on game improvement clubs.

Doubt this has anything to do with the sole and more that you are benefiting from the extra help of a borderline game improvement club.

I'm a shallow swinger (very little divot) and I prefer wider soles. I find my miss is a thin strike, bottom groove, and the mass at the bottom helps out immensely on thin strikes. Anytime I'm tried to use a think sole iron it hasn't gone well.

I am a steep swinger and I prefer thinner soles for a similar reason.  The higher center of gravity matches up with where my impact point is.  The thinner sole allows me to take a larger divot with less resistance.  I can almost feel the violent deflection of the club head off the turf when trying a large sole.  This is probably why I prefer long irons to hybrids.  Currently in S55’s, and that is as thick as I want to go.

I would agree that if hitting it fat is a problem, thick soles would’ help.
