Blade look with a little more forgiveness

fly44

Recommended Posts

This season I picked up an old set of Titleist 690 MBs. They were fun to hit at the start but just not forgiving enough for me. The thing is, I really love the look so not sure what set of irons to get. I like the look of the Taylormade  P7MC but they are a little pricey. My friend recommended the Titleist AP3 718 as they have the small profile but are a little cheaper. Does anyone have any suggestions for irons with the blade look but a little more forgiveness.

If you like the feel of the blades then the ap3’s will probably leave you wanting, as they are not great feeling.  If money wasn’t an issue the p770’s would be a good stand in for a blade.  T100’s would be my choice but if the TM’s are pricey they may be too expensive as well.  Ping Iblades are nice and look good at address but despite the name may not be quite blade looking enough.  I would check them out though as I found them to be very forgiving and good looking at address...

If money is an issue (isn’t it kind of for everyone these days) but you want new you might consider the dtc route.  The sub 70 cb looks good as does the similar offering from new level.  A combo set from hogan also could serve you well.  Something that looks blade like in the longer irons and the icon blades for the short irons would probably serve you well.  A buddy has the icons and they are great feeling irons...

X Forged might be a good option. Pretty forgiving considering the overall size. The blade length is a bit larger than blades, but look great. I have the 2018 version and I think in 2020 they refunded the wedges to be smaller.

the other one might be the Srixon zx7. That’s a little more compact for blade length, like the p770 or mc.

If you don't mind buying used - The Apex Pro 16's are quite nice. Just picked up a set, and they're tiny compared to my old 2016 ForgedTecs.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I really like the look and feel of forged blades, but now need some forgiveness. I'm currently playing a mixed set. My 4,5 and 6 are Taylormade '17 M2s and my 7-GW are Mizuno JPX 850 forged. I've never been able to play hybrids so I need game improvement long irons. Due to the lofts I do have a yardage gap between the 6 and 7 irons, but have worked around it so far. I'll probably keep this set up through the Winter here in NC. I may look at some of the options mentioned above such as the Mizuno 921s in the Spring.

Two things, first the "forgiveness" of a blade will come down to getting enough spin on the ball. If you have enough, even a mishit won't just fall out of the air, Mark Crossfield did a video comparing an old Top Flite blade to the Mavrik irons which is worth checking out.

Second, Mizuno MP20s, the shaft options are fantastic.

BINGO!

I just moved to the P770 and it certainly fits the need for a small blade like iron but with forgiveness and a faster face.

Do you want it to look like a muscleback from address or also on the back of the iron? If it is both I would recommend the Srixon z965. More forgiving than the Z Forged. Also the just-released New Level PF-1.

Srixon Z965.  I am a club hoe with my own GC2/HMT setup and many fitting clubs that I have acquired over the years. I have not found an actual blade/MB that is more forgiving than the Z965.  Although my HC is much lower now, I was gaming these as a 17 cap and scored better than with my P790's, which I tend to use during colder conditions when I need more distance.   I will never sell them.

Of recent/current models Ping G700-710 is the one "SGI category" iron have seen that has a relatively thin top line combined with a shallow face height. To me these factors make the design much less bulky/chunky looking than other current SGI models.

Mizuno HMB - a little thicker, a little longer - but blade look and forgiveness and hot.

T100 are a great option, there are also some 718 CB floating around ebay which are pretty blade looking but also more forgiving than they look.  The other one I like, may be hard to find, but the J15 CB are blade like from the top and are REALLY forgiving for a player CB.  I also wouldn't rule out some of the modern day blades if that is what you like to look at, they seem to be quite a bit more forgiving than some of the older models... the Wilson Staff blades are beautiful and felt really easy to hit, Srixon, Ben Hogan Icons, Ping Blueprints.... there are some great options out there right now.

What is most important to you about the look?  Top line?  Sole?  Blade length?

Maltby TS1 are tremendous. PXG 0211 would also fit the bill, although a bit more offset than I like in a "blade"

+1 on the TS1....many won't consider components, which is too bad as the TS1 is very good and meets OP criteria; otherwise just find a players cb that looks good at address!
