"Shorts must be Bermuda length"

But these golf shorts are not disheveled in any way... and this is what someone said wouldn't be allowed.  However using the pocket rule would permit very poorly fitting pants that look completely disheveled. But he's good because his pants have 4 or less pockets.  Makes no sense.

It makes perfect sense.

Explain how you write a short, simple and clear dress code to allow the shorts you posted, versus other “disheveled” cargo shorts.  You can’t.

You can’t have subjective requirements (e.g., tidy, clean, proper, tasteful, etc) because, frankly, everyone thinks they have acceptable taste. And you can’t write a paragraph to differentiate between two types of shorts.  Clear lines and simple rules work best:

Hats forward.

Shirts must have collars.

Shirt tails tucked in.
Belts required.

No cargo shorts.

Those rules are simple and understandable at a glance.  They are also easy to follow.  (Does anyone here not have clothes in their closet that meet those criteria?). Problems arise when people decide what they want to wear is more important than what they are allowed to wear.

There were/are Greg Norman shorts with one flat pocket on one leg that was called a scorecard pocket. I really wouldn't classify these as cargo shorts. But, if a course chooses to ban these, or any other type of clothing, it's up to them. A golfer can decide to comply with the dress code, or not play the course. I have never been on the course, and thought it would be a lot more fun if I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Even if the course allowed jeans and t-shirts, I wouldn't wear them.

Those shorts represent a rather recent development and a very small percentage of cargo shorts.  You keep pointing out an unfortunate exception. I don't disagree that those aren't bad. However, can you craft a policy that allows those but not the standard cargos I posted above, that will also not be completely subjective and open an establishment up to discrimination claims?

Those really aren't a "recent" exception. I bought 2 pair about 10 years ago. They are most certainly golf shorts. I wonder if the same club that bans those sells those collarless shirts? Anyway crafting a policy and including photos of "this" "not that" would be pretty easy.

Policies like this remind me of a funny story I read years ago. Airtraffic controllers are prohibited from wearing shorts on the job so one guy started wearing a kilt. 🙂

Agreed. Hagar has been making shorts in that style with a discreet pocket on the thigh for probably 15yrs.

Looking "presentable" is completely subjective. To one person that may just mean not wearing shorts with holes in them, but to another it may mean clean, ironed chino shorts. I never understood why people want to argue and try to fight dress code policies. It seems pretty simple to me.

If they say no cargo shorts then don't wear cargo shorts. If they say collared shirts only then don't show up in a TW style mock turtleneck. If you don't like a courses dress code policy then don't play there. But there is not point in arguing with someone about it. You're just going to end up looking like a jerk.

As a more casual golfer, sure I think some dress code rules are just silly. That being said, as long as the course posts the rules / requirements I will either follow them or decide not to play there. Going there and arguing is immature IMO.

My biggest irk is courses inconsistently enforcing their policy.

Cargos get a bad wrap, but I agree with you about their functionality. There's styles that don't look like cargos that are made specifically for golf. Also the zipoff style is very functional. They are also big in hiking and mountaineering.

I have no problem with dress codes and don't mind abiding by them. However if for example they require black socks and I'm wearing white shoes I'd prefer to wear white socks. Regardless I'll follow their fashion fauxpaux.

Apparel companies need to come up with a name for these style shorts that isn't cargo shorts.

I don't really think changing the name would change whether or not a course allows them...

Wear the same shorts all summer, mine are Lee Tri Flex, got half a dozen.  They are awesome and love the "scorecard" pocket. Don't use it tho, keep my hearing aid batteries in it lol. Bet 98% of the curmudgeons in the shops or at the first tee can't even notice/see the pocket.

I'm sure many of those that pass those kind of rules are seen on their yachts in Speedo thongs, pretending that their trophy wives aren't in it for the money.

Haha. That’s exactly what I was thinking.
