I am ready for blades - where do I start?

Yes, I had both of those sets!  How do current ball covers hold up to the '88 Redlines?

Using some of the data on the Titleist site (graphs of launch/spin for various shafts), I decided to try the NS Pro 105T.  I'm not sure where to turn short of finding a set and pulling shafts - and making sure the shafts are still straight.  I found a set of Apex 4s on one of the sites - might have been 2nd Swing - that I have around, and I have a couple of sets of Apex 3s that are pulls when someone changed shafts.  I had a set of custom irons from Titleist - they suggested FM 6.0 which were WAY stiffer and the person I spoke with after told me that.  I went to 2x soft step them and they still didn't feel quite right.  I'm curious whether the Pro Modus might be close - either the 105 or more closely the 120 - but haven't had any to try.  I just installed an Apex 3 into a 716 T-MB, replacing the Pro Modus 120 S and can't wait to give it  some swings!

They hold up well! Although, my set of redlines have had a little wear over the decades, so it's not like striking with a fresh wedge. 🙂

I think the Modus 120 are 85% there. My timing works well with it and it's the right weight, but I still give the edge to the Apex 4 and 3. All things being equal, I would take a 120 in regular over the 105 in stiff, but definitely test and see what you think.

The Crossfield video is interesting.  My take was that he found the 80s blade to actually perform better than the Maverick in virtually every category except that the Maverick flew slightly higher.  The test was with Crossfield hitting every shot.  He's a scratch player.  I wonder how the results would differ with a 5 or 10 cap hitting the shots.

Agreed on the take--he mentioned that he would try the test with other handicaps down the road.

That being said, I think the results speak for themselves at any handicap. The mavrik has both a long and short miss--it doesn't save the short shots from being way short, and adds a risk of hitting a way longer shot than expected. The SGI iron doesn't do what it says on the tin.

Question whats a good set to start with?

If u are ready to play blades, I think u should consider it as a long term investment. A good set of blades will last u many years, so why not going for the best that money can buy, given that u have the bankroll for it.

I'd say go for a set of Miura flagship MB 101 (international) or TB Zero (Japanese market). Miura probably needs no introduction, as they produce some of the highest quality irons out there.

Please keep us posted on what u decided on.

Happy golfing.

Cheers, mate.

Have you tried the P-7TW? I tried them when they were released a couple years ago and they felt really good. Higher lofts so it'll look like they are launching high when you first try them out.

Blades are like picking out your wife from a group of models. There are a lot of touring pros who do not play blades!!! Don't let your ego get in the way, they look great in your bag but you better be a ball striker, better be a high ball player. My personal clubs are Mizuno MMC, blade look and feel with some forgiveness. My best advice spend the money on lessons, & get fitted with the right shaft. T-Bone

Rickie Fowler bags a couple F9s and Mickelson is playing Epic Forged and Apex Pros. If you want to join the best players in the game, it’s probably better to follow their lead and pick a club based on what produces the best results rather than just picking something based on style. But then I also get playing a club you “like” over something you don’t even if it does help your score. People enjoy golf in different ways so if playing a blade style club is important to you go buy some Wilson Staff Model blades and get ready for the most enjoyable round of golf you’ve ever had.
