Is there such a thing as too much hip clearing? Or is this a position or club face issue

Recommended Posts

Beginner here, been working on my drive a lot and my natural ball trajectory has been starting right and slicing further right. I feel that I'm doing a pretty good job of not coming over the top, hence the ball not starting out to the left, but I am pretty certain my face is always open. If I close my club face 45 degrees at address (so that the toe is literally pointing at the ball) and/or take an EXTREMELY strong grip with my trail hand under the club, and take my normal swing...the ball goes straight and far, albeit somewhat low.

My question is - is there such a thing as too much hip clearing? Am I over-rotated too soon in my swing? Notice my rear foot is up on the toe before I even contact the ball. Am I too far up on my front foot? Does this need to be corrected or is this a good thing and I should just focus on squaring the club face?

I'm also able to hit the ball straight by simply eliminating a lot of my hip action and doing more of a shoulders-only swing (where my body and hips are parallel with the target line on contact, like they are at address) but from what I can tell that's a bad habit to form.

Any help would be very welcome!

P.S. former baseball player which may explain why I swing this way. You can see a photo of an MLB player swinging below and how rotated his hips are per a typical baseball swing.

Jbmoonchild,

The golf swing is simply a ROTATION of the UPPER TORSO over the Lower body. In all three of the above stills the ARC of your RIGHT HAND and ARM is  INSIDE and UNDERNEATH the ARC of your LEFT HAND and ARM in it's most powerful position / lever ( Ben Hogan called it -- THE SLOT .)  That is all you should be concerned about and you have performed it in an exemplary manner . The DOMINANT HANDS **** CONTROL **** almost all body movements and the body will ALWAYS position itself to accommodate the position our HANDS .

Beside - you ONLY have time during the DS for ONE thought and that should NOT wasted on the HIPS - just the HANDS !

Thanks for the replies! I see what you're saying and I'm going to focus on my hands/wrists and squaring the club face above all else.

This video shows a couple of ways to control the club face during the swing.  You should watch some other Eric Cogorno's videos that explain basic principles of the golf swing.

Having spent decades trying to swing thinking about what the body does, I now let my body follow my hands and it's transforming my game. The body will follow the hands if you get them into the correct positions (that aren't really positions).

I'm a huge fan of what Monte teaches with the No Turn Cast swing series.
