Who's going with a longer shaft this year?

I had been thinking about adding about 2 inches to my new Driver(Callaway) that will come in the New Year. I have had this on my mind before Bryson D. went down this road. The only thing is I will need the tour cog in order to have the adjustment I think I will need. I played a 48 inch driver for a few months back years ago. I liked it and don't know why I went away from the set up. I also just listen to the Ep. 150 of the fitting room and liked what I heard during the podcast. If your thinking about doing this give it a listen.

45 to 45.5 seems to be where i have the most success. Shorter shafts don't seem to add accuracy for me, and longer shafts it's negligeable distance gains for what i lose in accuracy

I’m building up a 47” + driver to see what the effects are for me.  My main question so far is the shaft “stiffness.” I have seen advice saying go slightly softer in flex if you go lighter in head weight, but I have also seen it recommended to go with the same flex, but with more tipping.  As with everything in golf, I imagine that it simply “depends.”

You are going to be loooooong ... 425 vs 400 shootout will be fun for me, perhaps against you at Windswept pro

Lol, that would be the PERFECT place to give something like this its coming out party!  I’ve got an Adams 9032 LD head at 7.5 to start with, now I just have to guesstimate a shaft that is reasonably close to my needs.

I'm going with a factory build so we can get the head weight where I need it to be, also might go with a stiffer shaft.

I noticed this with shorter shafts also, I hit them the same amount sideways as 45”.

I haven’t experimented with anything longer yet, but I’m going to give it a go this spring.

This build, as with virtually all of mine, is a proof of concept.  It will be my 2nd one, as the first one was truly a Frankenstein.  Heck, I didn’t even spend money on the right grip for that one!

Also, good suggestion on the podcast.  As a Callaway staffer, I’m very interested in what they will offer for those of us looking to go down this route.  Hopefully this build will let me know exactly what to order when that time comes.

I’m playing driver at 47.25 now. Extended shaft by 2 inches. Longer of the tee and don’t really notice less accurate.

Just went full Bryson 48” in a G410 and thought I was going to have an accuracy issue, this is why I was looking for a change. I’ve Definitely  Improved that and think I’m able to time the longer club better, not letting it get behind the body on the down swing. I’m more patient in transition. An extra 10 yards helps to.

I know this works for some, but I'm definitely *not* going to try this.  I've been down this road, it doesn't end well for me.  My already less than ideal dispersion increases with no increase in distance.

If anything, I may take my driver down to 43".

And the disclaimer:  my swingspeed hits its maximum at somewhere around 43.5" or lower.  I can add length all I want and get nothing added.  In the fitting where this was illustrated, I actually lost speed going from 43" and 43.25" to 44.125".  My above comment should be taken with that in mind...

I played a 48-inch persimmon-headed driver for a few months back around 1980. The original shaft snapped off a foot above the head on a routine tee shot. Just for fun, I had the clubsmith leave the shaft at 48 inches. (Standard for era was ~ 43.5 inches).

I know why I went away. The good news: I hit the ball a long way. The bad news: I sometimes hit the ball deep into the treeline. About three times a round I would have to chip sideways back to the fairway... providing I could find the ball. At the end of the season I got it trimmed back to standard length.

Fast forward to this century...  My Rogue 4W has a 42.75" shaft (std). For shots off the deck, I choke down a half inch. This seems to give me straighter shots than holding it at full length. (With chokedown I get a slight draw from a closed stance... full length tends to be pull).

On my driver, I will try Howard's DIY fitting. It may be an inch too long for me.
