When you hit the shaft longer and straighter than your gamer and your buddy owns the shop and you get stuff sent for free, the decision should be frictionless.

The problem, at least for me, and i said from the start,  is you have a SET of clubs. Its going to feel so much different than all his other shafts, i cant imagine any kind of consistency going back and forth throughout the round. Doesnt mean it isnt longer and straighter heads up in a launch monitor battle.

Rick doesn't actually know much about clubs. When I used to watch his reviews more I could always point out 3-4 things he said in each video that were flat out wrong.

Also his opinion is usually opposite of most people. He said the new King Tour irons feel horrible when others are saying softest ever. He said i500 feels very soft when others don't like the clicky feel

Lol this... its a trend lately. If you want to know whats good, find out what rick doesnt like

That is exactly why I was never interested in the concept, because my driver is 44.25" and I am wholly uninterested in trying to get comfortable hitting a 46"+ driver.

He hit what they sent him, didn't work, gave it a good shot, didn't like it and it's a problem?

Wouldn't say he butchered anything -  in his option he doesn't like an overpriced shaft some folks seem pretty invested in hyping for some reason.

You don't think they are hoping people put down the $ and plug and play, lol -- of course they do.  I'd say this was pretty honest.

I agree. I am not the biggest fan of Rick but whatever. He can only do what he can do. He approaches must reviews from a very none technical position. May I think appreciate that.

some prefer the more technical TXG.

Something for everyone.

I'll get interested in the Autoflex when Bryson adopts it and starts hitting his driver 500 yards carry....

LOL, golfers making a living to whom cost is no object not adopting something that is so "awesome"?

Looks so whippy can't believe it doesn't spring out of the box when it's opened.

Look no further than bryson and his fat grips, one length irons, and rebar shafts. Pretty outside the box. I dont see other tour guys following suit. Golfers are interesting creatures, especially pros, in that 99% of them prefer the feel they grew up with and are used to. Even if something outside the box comes along and offers gains they still may not use it because it doesnt fit that feel they have been grown used to their whole career.

Even if he hit the shaft perfect and maximized the results.  He would probably get roasted in the comments for even liking an expensive shaft like that(nevermind even recommending it).  His channel is all about casting the a net over the widest part of the audience, not casting the widest net.  We are not his audience.

This is exactly correct. His channel, while extremely popular, is aimed at the fattest part of the golfing market to gain popularity. Whether people like to admit it or not, most don’t like expensive products to truly be better or work better because they are not obtainable or justifiable to said fattest part of the market. A $750 shaft offers no benefits over your factory shaft is much more likable than a $750 shaft offers benefits you can’t get from your factory shaft.

I watch the reviews from both TXG and Rick, and take away a bit from both, but as said in here, the TXG vids are unrealistic for most of us mortal golfers. As with Rick he calls it as HE sees it regardless of what most of the industry is saying.

That for me is enough to value his opinion. I love when he just comes out and says that the newer heads or shafts are no better or minimal in performance gains.

As for the autoflex, there is no way I would be interested in a 47 inch driver, so playing it at his normal playing length would be a more apple's to apples comparison with all shafts he has tested thus far. Rick, keep doin what your doin, as not all of us hit is 320 yards and swing it 120mph like everyone on this forum, LOL

Like him or not, Shiels is one of the very few "influencers" that will totally pan a product. Almost all of the online reviewers just read the press release for the club/ball/whatever, give it a couple whacks, and say a few nice but generic/non-controversial things and move on.

So in that sense, I thought this review was great. He concluded with... no, this mysterious, ridiculously expensive shaft is not worth it. I think he's the first to come to this conclusion, and that's refreshing.

I do agree with you. I have not witnessed Rick ever be unduly biased by marketing or a company throwing money at him. That is a massive part of my assessing golf youtubers.

On the other hand, Rick has an incredibly poor grasp on the effect of a small sample size and the accompanying maths that go along with testing a product with one man hitting 20 balls. As a consequence, I find his ending summations to be wildly broad and overreaching.

again, I love the man’s videos and am so happy for his success. Production quality is outstanding and his honesty is commendable, but Shiels has one of the poorest mathematic and technical knowledge of any golfer on the internet.

I watched both the TXG and RS reviews. Liked them both for different reasons.  Regardless, I prefer a much shorter shaft and I cannot swing that fast.

Definitely agree, and if you've ever heard him describe his background and how he stumbled into the YouTube game, it's clear that his massive success is less a result of a special understanding of the game and the equipment he reviews, but rather (1) timing and (2) just generally understanding how to make a compelling product that would appeal to people.

He was your average young club pro looking to generate a client base and so he took to uploading YouTube lessons to try to bring people in. That doesn't make him any more knowledgeable or talented than any of the other thousands of pros dotting the landscape. He just has a better grasp of the social media landscape and is a generally affable and likeable guy.

Rick has 1.4 million subscribers.  TXG has 130 thousand.  You're talking about 2 different subsets of golfers.  The really technical guys are going to be enamored with TXG and what Shiels does won't hold muster with them.  Rick's audience is the casual golfer that find him light and entertaining.  There's nothing wrong with that.  If you're the kind that wants to dive deeper then TXG gives you the outlet to do that.  Comparing the two is really kind of pointless because they're not doing the same thing.

Well said. It also fits with an interesting "10% rule" that I have seen pop up in a variety of different areas; the idea that of any given audience in most forms of sports/entertainment that only 10% of them will ever take the "next step" when it comes to deeper engagement. It is very rough/general, but it seems to always be a reliable benchmark.
