Kyoei Prototype MB or Miura MB-101? Which is softer?

Recommended Posts

Hi GolfWRXers and MB connoisseurs,

Anyone have tried hitting Kyoei prototype MB (or their other blade) and/or the Miura 101 MB? I have hit neither but trying to get some opinion out there from good iron players on which is more "soft" and "solid" feeling.

I've tried to dig through everything that people have written on Kyoei Prototype MBs, but there's not much out there. I have so many questions... like is the S25C (1025 carbon steel) as soft or softer feeling than 1020 carbon steel from say Nike Forged Blades or Ben Hogan Icons?

A little bit of background info/context:

  • Reached my long-term goal of becoming a + handicap player and now just want to play the best looking and satisfying irons out there.
  • Playing x100 ss1x; 6i SS ~95mph;
  • Was in the market for new clubs, so I demo'd the Ben Hogan Icon irons (which subsequently got me looking down the rabbit hole of "best blades") and they were so good and solid feeling (trapping the 6i was like a train hitting the ball--making the most deep and flushed sound with the ball coming off the face). Is this the combination of the V-sole and the 1020 carbon steel?
  • Getting rid of my gamer set of PXG 0311T Black irons to go more for the best looking AND feeling blade irons available. My PXG 0311T are good performing irons, but they don't give the best feedback (the gel inserts kind of make it less "solid" and more muted). The black finish also feels a little less soft than the normal satin finish (I did a personal side by side comparison).
  • I've played/hit a lot of the other mainstream brands' blades like the Nike Forged Blades, Mp-20, MP-20 copper, Titleist MBs, Srixon, P7TW... and to me I prefer the feeling of the deep, soft, and heavy flushed feeling and sound of the Ben Hogan irons.

Any info from good iron players willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not counting the PXGs, because I have not really hit some of the top end models, but every other iron you listed is “softer” than Kyoei.   Some JP nut is probably going to get on this thread

Some JP nut is probably going to get on this thread and try to “fight me”, but I will just say it now, when it comes to “softness” feel, the Kyoei is highly overrated.  And they really have zero technological benefit.  If you want old school, clean looks, eye candy- you cannot do much better than Kyoei.  If you want to score, then look elsewhere.

I see you can get the raw heads from Kyoei for a good price, and these are the blocky heads that need to full grinding treatmeant.  That’s cool, but I do not have Don White or equivalent at my disposal and a plating setup to dial in the irons just like I want.  Might as well go to a finished product with someone who gets it right, like...Miura.

Good luck with your quest, sounds like a lot of fun!

      This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

      The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
