What's the best simple advice you've gotten so far?

Metro07

Recommended Posts

From lesson, book, TV, internet, friend etc.?

Since I've been back swinging the clubs so far what seems to be working well for me is simply keeping my elbows tight to my body and rotating my shoulders so my lead shoulder is pointing down at the ball at the top of my backswing. Saw it on a Tom Saguto vid referred to as stack and tilt method I think.

I'm at the point of setting money aside for some lessons. The question with that is, what is the minimum amount I should take to make it really worthwhile?

Best advice I ever got was do not BS yourself about how far you hit your clubs and play from the tees that you can handle. Too many golfers screw themselves the moment they take the 7 iron out of the bag on the 168 yard approach shot to the green when they should be hitting an easy 5 iron.

I see so many players that are DOA before they even start their back swing and a small change to their ego would shave a lot of strokes and enjoy the game more.

1.) Increase your grip pressure for hitting full shots. I play best with an 8-9/10 grip pressure. Most bad rounds I am gripping the club too loosely.

2.) Judge ball position off your body, not your feet

3.) Cast the club from the top

The basics are important. Grip, stance, alignment which will build you a solid base to begin with. I didn't say swing as their are many ways to direct the club back to the ball. As a former PGA professional, I can tell you that how dedicated you are will be probably the biggest determining factor in you improvement.

I would look for a PGA certified professional for any lessons and remember all are not created equal but they all have been trained in teaching. It's their job to keep up with any new technology  to make learning better for their students. You don't have to spend the diaper $ either. Find one who will give you a series of lessons at reduced rates over the course of the spring/summer. I would try to set them at about every two weeks after about 3 lessons within the first week and do you homework-practice what he is telling you. There will be ups and downs but stick with it and put in the time and you will improve. It's really up to you.

Best advice - don't take advice about the golf swing from random sources (like here).

Not trying to be funny, but newer golfer tie themselves in knots trying all sorts of random tips that may or may not be relevant for their swing. Get rid of golf lesson shows, magazines, YouTube teaching channels and internet articles for advice on YOUR swing. If a tip works from these sources it is nothing more than random luck.

When I was 14 or 15 there was this pro I used to play with often and one day I had already taken my stance to hit and he is in front of me and looks at me saying DON’T THINK.

I didn’t get it. He saw I was hesitant often right when ready to shoot. A few years later I got it and i haven’t thought a thing when I’m ready to swing for more than twenty years.

After a couple of anti conventional "wisdom" suggestions on setup in a greenside bunker, and trying to slow down my ultra accelerating swing, Monte saying, "try to leave it in the bunker" produced a nice soft shot that went up over the substantial lip and nicely on the green.  Once we got over the "lashing" at the ball, the simplest golf advice ever in the bunkers, again, after proper setup, was "just make a golf swing".  "Just make a golf swing" (while thinking "minivan vs. Ferrari") has been the simplest, yet most effective, golf advice I've ever received.
