Colorado WRX 2021

I played the Dunes yesterday and the mats are still being used for the par 3s.  Greens pretty firm for just being punched, most likely being top dressed with sand.  Greens rolled decent but some unexpected bouncing of the ball along the putter path due to punch divots.  I also got "Covid'd" twice (ball deflected off flag stick not going in the hole).  Without the flag in the hole I would have made a long putt and a chip in.  Oh well, doesn't matter since my ball striking with my irons really stunk.  Driving was pretty good.  Early season golf and some things to work on.

Also yeah, D'Lance prices are good. $40/hour I believe. But their spots are like fully booked up unless you can get their mid-week, mid-day. Weekends are booked solid for months out.

I'd be happy to give up one of my spots if someone wants to use it. I have all my times booked out through May.

Wind was brutal down south yesterday.

I shot a 42 with four 3-putts (in a row because that's how awesome I am). @jacobEDGE was also witness to one of my putts (with decent pace) literally taking a 90-degree turn an inch before the hole then rolling out another five inches. The joys of South Suburban.

Regardless, being able to now pick up In-N-Out on the way home from golf is awesome. (Doubly awesome since there is also a Krispy Kreme on County Line, so I can also pick up a vaccine doughnut.)

Hahahaha, I certainly didn't need to know about the vaccine donut!

QUICK!

The 2-person scramble at Highland Meadows had a few more spots open up. Was originally supposed to happen the weekend of the big snow dump we got. I guess enough people cancelled due to the new date, so they added more openings.

Did you get a spot Jacob?

Played Todd Creek today. I dont play the course enough, Really good track.

Greens were rolling great and fairly quick. Made a few putts but the rest of the game was up and down in the wind.  Fairway's and rough are still needing grow in.  A number of patchy areas.    Wind was blowing pretty good and it got really cold at the end,  Front 9 was 1 club or more and back side was 2 clubs easy.  Standard weekend golf at 5 hours is the sad side.

They get some mositure this week with the coming snow and would bet in a few weeks it will be in really good shape.

Edit: I tried the new Tour BX and ProV1x.  I was surprised / bummed how the wedges chewed up the Tour BX over 9 holes. More surprised how well the V1x held up and spins on the short shots.

Wife and I played The Links this morning. It was a bit chilly at 8:50am, and it didn't help that there was a stiff breeze most of the morning. However, after about an hour, the sun was up high enough, and it turned into a very pleasant day playing with another pleasant couple. Thursday's weather forecast isn't looking great; and my wife and I have a noon tee time for Saturday, which looks even worse.

I'm rambling so I don't have to talk about my golf game. (And how my wife had more pars than I did today...)

We tee'd off at 1:30 so by 4:30 it started to cool down quickly with the wind, by hole 18 felt like it was in the 30's with the wind.   Have not played the Links a long time, how is the course?

It's a nice, short course. Great for beginners like my wife; certainly not as crowded and slow like Family Sports. For longer hitters, you can leave your driver in the bag, as most trouble is 280+ off the tee. Really nice patio to hang out after a round for drinks (but I'd rather go elsewhere for food).

Iffy if it's worth $27 for 9 holes ($40 for 18) on the weekends.

Greens were punched and sanded last week, so they were super slow.

I did the first time around! It filled up pretty quick.

Also...just got done with another combine. I'll never be able to break 70. Today's score was 67.5.

Screen Shot 2021-04-10 at 2.49.52 PM.png

At least you know what to work on! This year, I started learning my carry yardages for my half swings with my 50, 54, and 58, and it has really helped dial in some of those shorter distances. It's certainly helped on the course for the couple times I've played this year. My next short game goal is to get my 30-40yd pitch shot dialed in, and understand how my ball reacts on the green. I just ordered a couple dozen used AVX's (the ball I play) for my shag bag so I can start practicing that piece a couple times a week.

This weekend was our first men's club event at the Burb. I shot an 81 with 4 doubles and a triple...yes, you read that correctly 🤣

I was quite pleased with my play overall, particularly for this early in the season and being my first full round. I did pull four tee shots that got me in some trouble (I did find 8's greenside bunker from the 3rd tee lol), and missed two putts from less than 2.5ft (though I felt like I putted pretty well overall). I did have a monster drive on 6 that left me 177 to the front of the green...definitely the best drive I've had on that hole. 3 birds on the day, which resulted in two skins 🙂

While I've been putting in some time practicing indoors, nothing really replaces playing on the course, so I'm glad the weather is starting to turn for the better (except this week lol).

what's everyone's favorite short course around here?

once my doc gives me the OK to make full swings i want to get in a full round on an easy course where i can leave driver at home. e.g. the kind of place where i could build up some confidence after not swinging for more than a month.

thanks!

I've never played it, but the par 3 course at Green Valley Ranch looks dope.

thanks for the suggestion! hahaha looks like a lot of distances i struggled with during the trackman combine, so we'll see about that course being a "confidence builder" 😂

j/k it looks like a lot of fun.

GVR's par 3 is good, but the longest hole is 140yds...most are 80ish or less.

I would recommend The Links in Highlands Ranch. It is an exec course, and you can leave the driver in the bag even on the par 4's. Easy course to walk, fun layout, and great greens.

this also looks like a fun little track, thanks! looks like i could probably get away with just irons at this place, depending on how much distance i've lost. strangely, i couldn't find a score card or info about the layout on the website.

It's the same course I was discussing this morning. If you ever drive east-bound on 470 on the south side of town approaching Quebec, there is one hole visible from the highway that is almost a 90-degree dogleg right.

It's a good mix of par 3's and par 4's. The par 3's range from 120-ish to about 210 (downhill). There is one par 4 on the front nine where it might take two long-iron shots to get onto the green; otherwise, long-iron off the tee and mid to short iron. Granted, those distances are from the tips (blue tees).

GVR - Definitely more of a pitch and putt rather than a short course or par 3, but don't let it discourage you from going. $10 for unlimited golf, free if you catch the pro attendant on a generous evening, and it's usually pretty quiet. Easy to bounce around if you catch up to anyone and it's usually in decent condition. Holes range from about 50-130 yards, but mostly land around 100. Not a lot of full swings. This is my favorite spot to go if I want to walk around with a buddy and work on feel and get back in the groove.

The Links - Fun course and usually in good condition. I agree with the sentiments above that it can be a little pricey for what it is though. I disagree that it's good for beginners though, doubt it applies though. If I remember correctly, on one side, a lot of the par 3's have either forced carries, tight tee shots, or greens surrounded by close trees and bushes.

Kennedy - I'd avoid. Usually really slow and 6 out of 9 holes are somewhere between 140 and 155 yards. Slow and a few holes manage to invite some calls of fore.

Family Sports - Depends on when you go, but the course is very exposed so if it's a windy day it won't be fun. First hole is covered in range balls and pace can be ridiculously slow. They sometimes have surprisingly good greens and I think the layout is perfect if you want to play a short course and still get full swings in.

Good call on The Links. The front 9 definitely has more forced carries (I usually play the back 9); that said, I was also thinking from the perspective of the red tees (for my wife), and there isn't TOO much trouble in front of the tee.

What I like about Family Sports is the legit par 5. It takes a massive drive as well as a perfect fade on the second shot to get home in two. #9 is a beast, especially when playing into the wind. It also has probably the best patio; virtually full unobstructed view of the whole front range (too bad their beer selection is terrible).

Probably too far north for you, but the south par 3 course at Hyland Hills has a good mix of holes from 65 to 204 yards, very reasonable at $10 to walk and pretty quick to play. Don't confuse it with the north par 3 which is much shorter holes all pretty much next to each other and geared towards kids.

Stoney Creek in Arvada is another short 9 hole course mostly par 3s with a couple very short par 4s that has a rating so you can post those scores.

I like the CommonGround par 3 as well, it is definitely geared more towards kids/families but it's a great walk and the holes are 50-150 or so yards.  Greens can be in rough shape sometimes but for $10 (and the kids are free), I treat it as good wedge and pitch practice more than anything.

Played in the first CG tourney last Saturday.  Was very fun, greens were a little slow (they had just aerated Monday/Tuesday before) but otherwise course was in good shape.  Started out with a nice 38 on the front....and followed it with a not so nice 46 on the back.  D'oh.  3 birdies for the round but waaaaayyy too many doubles during the round.  Just some dumb decisions and some bad approach shots.  Oh well, live and learn, on to the next one.
