Best 64* wedge: TM Hi-Toe, Cally PM, Other??

Recommended Posts

Decided to drink the Dave Pelz kool aid this year (or at least give it a taste...) & opt for a 64* wedge in lieu of my 3W which I rarely hit (much more comfortable with my 17* hybrid instead). Never owned or even hit one ever...  Any recommendations? Looking at either the Hi Toe or PM Grind, but would like to hear others, including the practicality of carrying a 64* in the first place. Currently 58* is my highest loft. I miss more greens than I’d like and a few short side misses are typical for me. Yeah I know I should aim away from those sucker pins & go for the fat part of the green but hey... golf!

It depends on the bounce and what your looking to so with it... i have a pm grind 2.0 56 12bounce and its really great in alot of situations. Its automatic from sand... in fact i think i havent misshit one sand shot this past season including a few almost new hole outs from the sand which ive never done. Also has done really great greenside any grass. Ive also hit full/3 quarter approach shots with it and had noo problem. The taylormade hi toe i was close to getting but went with the pm and cant complain.  Also dont forget to practice your high loft wedge situations.... the higher the loft the trickier it is to execute unless your use to it.

I have the first generation PM Grind and I really like it. It's incredibly versatile. I use it for most greenside bunkers, flops, and other delicate work around the greens where loft and spin are critical. I maintain a 6 degree gap in my wedges - 46 PW, 52, 58 PM, and 64 PM. They each have their place for different shots and while I can't remember the last time I hit a full shot with the 64, I'll always have one (or similar) in the bag.

I haven't tested the TaylorMade, and it looks like there is low availability of PM 19's here in Australia. I need to replace mine so I'll be watching this thread with great interest, but part of me thinks the next generation PM grind is an obvious choice.

Picked up a PM Grind 64 this fall, and I’m not sure how I ever got along without it.  I now use it or my 58 degree PM Grind for approximately 95 percent of my short game shots.  Best bunker wedges I’ve played, and I actually want to have 40-80 yard shots into a green.  I used to avoid those distances like the plague.

I have a high-toe that I hit against a rock, so I pulled the shaft and had it grinded down and bent it to 70 degrees.  Fun club to mess around with.  Makes guys at the club look really bad when they try it.

A 60 with a versatile grind is going to out preform the 64 all day unless you have some wonky launch characteristics or play off concrete.

I game 4 Wedges...

46° | 06°

52° | 10°

58° | 10°

64° | 16°

The 64° is a 62° Miura High Bounce that we bent weak to 64°. Great wedge. Blew away my expectations. Can't speak highly enough.

I have always found the hi-toe wedges a bit heavy but I do like to add a 64* wedge to my bag in certain circumstances (small greens, firm bunkers, tight lies, etc.).  I picked up a Callaway MD5 Jaws 64* with 10* of bounce and really like that it is completely in line with my other Callaway wedges.  When I have that in the bag my gapping is usually:  52*, 58*, 64*; so I will still only play 3 wedges (4 seems excessive compulsive to me...:-)).  My 2 cents...

I've been experimenting with high lofted wedges over the last few months also. I play mostly flat courses with elevated greens that get dry & fast easily, so stopping a wedge on them can be challenging at times.

I initially tried the PM Grind and TM High Toe, but didn't get along with either one.  I found a severely shortened Cleveland 588 (-1.75") and had moments of brilliance mixed with moments of frustration. Then I picked up a standard length Cobra Trusty Rusty 64 which I struggled with at first, then I cut the Cobra down about an inch to play slightly longer than the Cleveland and it has worked pretty well.

The biggest challenge has been resisting the urge to use it when it's not needed. For me, it really should be reserved for special situations from short distances (<40yd) and almost perfect lies. It's an absolute weapon when used in the right circumstances, but it can just as easily cost a stroke as save a stroke so it needs to be used wisely.
