Iron Suggestions for a low spin player

Hi All,

I've been doing some experimenting, and I want to consider a new set of irons.  My goal would be mainly to increase spin/height (stopping power).

I've been alternating between S55s and I210s recently.  I hit the S55's higher/spinnier. I'll post of some my data for 2 representative 7 irons below to give you some idea of my delivery.  What I'm looking for is  some irons to try.  I'd prefer something more player looking in nature, but I'm trying to have an open mind.  I like the z785 a lot, but I think it'll be a bad fit with what i'm trying to do.  I'm willing to look at things from the last few years - I might even prefer used.

S55 w/ AWT 2.0 Stiff (7 iron 33 degree):

Ping i210 w/ Modus 105 Stiff (33* 7 iron)

Thanks for any ideas you can provide - I like to go into a fitting with some ideas in mind (even if it's about how I can swing a little better!)

The 785 are flat out not what you’re after. I’d check out Titleist T100/AP2 and 716/718/620 CB. The Ping iBlade also spun like a top for me.

As a side note, you’re quite efficient, I wouldn’t be scared of “low spin” shafts. Sometimes they end up doing the opposite. Go into it with an open mind. My dad went into his fitting with XP95 stiff and got his spin increased with DG 120 stiff. On paper that doesn’t make sense but that’s what happened. I spin DGS300 more than just about any other shaft. Not sure why.

Are these numbers on grass or mats?

What golf ball do you use?  That may be a easier route.

5W: Titleist D917 18 @ 18.75, Fujikura Pro 2.0 Tour Spec 8S
Hybrid: Titleist 816 H2 21 @ 22, Diamana D+ 100 Hybrid
Irons: PING i210 (5-U), Nippon Modus 120S

Oh yeah - good questions. Mats with Bridgestone Tour B XS (spinniest ball I can find).  I realize mats can kill spin for some guys - these are decent mats, I think but I couldn’t say for sure.

Even good mats kill my spin. I spin like 1k more off grass. I now don’t like going close to 6k off mat with a 7i as outside I get ballooning.

I know people don't like to see this reply, but I would do some swing work before I invested in new irons.  Sub 3 degree Attack Angle with a 7 iron can be really hard to fit for and you are losing a lot of consistency out on the course.  The irons you have are good, so the money may be spent better on instruction.  Also, if you really kick the launch up with sub 6k spin, dispersion is going to be a big issue.

I definitely appreciate this! It’s the whole reason I included data.

I’ve been trying to look at attack angle as the culprit. I was super steep for a long time and have somehow come full circle.

I play i210 and my TrackMan numbers are pretty close to yours other than I am about 3.5-4.5 down.  My spin on mats averages about 5700 or so with the 7 iron.

I have the same theoretical concern as you so I play Pro V1x.  In practice, I cannot recall hitting a 7 iron into a green and having my ball mark and my ball miles apart....or walking up to the green and being shocked at the roll out.

Do you notice a problem during rounds or just on TrackMan?

If you really want to, I think you could go retro loft from Ping or something like T100 or used AP2s...but you may be chasing a ghost.

Another option may be to find a ball that spins even more. IIRC, Mizuno's ball has that going for it.

Other than that, as a previous post suggested, maybe get your attack angle down a degree or so.

Good thoughts. I switched courses this year to a place that plays much firmer than I’d been used to, so I don’t have a great baseline for real world reaction because of that change.

I think those spin numbers are reasonable given your speed! I'm definitely not a fitter though.

You can be a very successful player with that attack angle. The more important number is low point - often overlooked. People get very obsessed with angle of attack. Lots of great shallow players. Key thing is low point not being too close to the ball in combination with that.
