Near violence on the course; what were the circumstances?

No doubt, that is definitely annoying.

My position on this is that the player assistants are not doing their job.

I’m sure if they were to explain a procedure on how to handle carts, and themselves, around the greens those offenders would comply. 

At least then they would have a clue of what is expected at that course.

 

I often remark to FC’s that the players on course on any given day can be separated into 2 groups: golfers that are members of a facility, or have been raised in that environment, and non-golfers who occasionally go to munis where anything goes. They splurge once in a while and go to a real golf course. It is very noticeable.

A couple of years ago during a pretty competitive team match, I (26 years old) was matched up against a player from another club (mid to high 30's). The format is 2 singles matches and a better ball match in the same group and my partner's opponent is known as the slowest player in the area. I'm talking S.L.O.W (We ended up finishing 18 holes in 6.5 hours with no one in front of us). On the 13th hole, myself and my opponent both hit our balls left into the woods. My ball was ok, but his ball was a little more left and probably not findable. At this point I was 3 up in the match, and we were about 4 holes behind, so after looking for my opponents ball for a minute or 2, I exclaimed that I was going to punch out real quick to speed things up. I guess that was a no no because my opponent went off on me about how that was a d*** move and inconsiderate and how I had no class. As much as I wanted to yell back at him, I figured the whooping I was giving him on the course was enough and I won that hole and the next hole to finish him off.

Unfortunately, I have NEVER been to a course where the Marshal's were proactive in speeding up play. And I am talking about 40 years worth of golf. Frustrating.

so you watched him get ready to hit and watched as he hit but then had to ask who hit they ball when the arrived? No reason to hit into someone but you probably were playing slow as you didn't say otherwise.  Keep it moving.  This little incident only slowed you down more.

Honestly, only 1 time in 20+ years of playing has it come remotely close; On a frequent course the Green, cart part tee box from 16 to 17 is really tight and shot just pulled a bit should get a fore call to be safe. So my group has finished and has driven up to 17th tee. All of the sudden wham balls hits another players cart. So my buddy collects himself and waits for the group to drive up. Now if your playing the tips you would be blind to us but any other tee you could see us. Buddy is just holding the ball and in a nice put joking term says pulled that what just a bit eh? 

 

Guy: why'd you pick up my ball?

Partner: well it landed in the back of our cart

Guy: oh well I'll drop here

Partner: (now aggravated) you know you should yell out just to be safe my wife was in the cart with me

Guy: well maybe if you hurried the F&^( up it wouldn't have happened

 

This is where I now need to describe the size of everyone here and some humble brags 😎

 

Jackwagon who hit us maybe 5'10 upper 40s seems kinda could be in shape

Partner: late 50's 5'8 a little big but a collegiate wrestler back in the day

Me: early 30s 6'4 former collegiate football player

 

So words at this point escalated and such. Mind you while this all happened the jackwagons group was on the other side of the green basically ignoring him.  As words were escalated I went to my bag to grab a roll of nickels (I use to bounce bars in college too) and just walked up up between the two guys and should tall and puffed out the chest. The guy who hit us was defiantly thinking about  taking a shot, and I won;t lie I was asking for it with my body language knowing I could drop him. After a few looks up and down he just walked away.

 

So just to answer a few questions that might be had: yes it was a slow round I think it was 430, but literally until after this argument we were waiting on a foursome in front of us the course was stacked. The guy knew this too as there are a few holes where you can see if it is a stack up or one group.

 

Best part of the story was when I returned my cart. As I said I play this court frequently and know the guys working decently.

 

Cart guy: Hey man how was your round day?

Me: Pretty good until some douchecanoe hit us on 17 and then argued it was our fault

cart guy: you serious? thinking it was too slow...come over here>>>>the carts have GPS that are tacked by the worked to check for slow play>>>> guys pulls up my cart number>>>>looks like you were following the group ahead of you all day

Me: yeah it is what it is, I've made mistakes not saying fore before but I'd apolgize right after.

cart guy: (group that hit into us on the 18th green) wait was it the guy in the green polo?

Me: wow how'd you know?

Cart guy: this isn't the first group he's hit into and tried to start something. I'll write him to the proshop

Though everything you said is spot on, as I alluded to, my nature is to get down in the mud with the pigs.  Back during my youth I took up the task of stepping in to protect people that couldn't or wouldn't protect themselves.  As I matured certain skills and abilities became useful to various sources so l soon found myself in more serious surroundings because of those skills.  Somebody has to do it....  Though my close-quarter skills are rusty they are still effective. 

 

I am thankful I haven't used them in many years.  Unless you call beating the hell out of a little white ball - fighting for something... LOL

1988. Chandler Park in Detroit, an old Donald Ross design, 14th hole, one of only two holes with houses along the fairway. I'm playing alone. 2 Knuckleheads approach me as I am walking towards the par 3 green. I had hit 5 balls to as there was no one around. I had my old Hogan ShurOut sand wedge in my hand to clean up my misses (How did Calloway usurp that name?) Two knuckle heads, one of them bearing a knife approached me. The one displayed their weapon as they requested my wallet. I had been tumbling, boxing and practicing martial arts since 1965, starting at 6 yrs old. After years of concentrating on the arts all it too was a quick, an almost indiscernible whap with the toe of the wedge to the moron with the knife's radius bone to create a nasty compound fracture. Of course he dropped the knife. They both ran off. And I ran off too. Because God knows what retribution I may have faced had I remained.

I was playing a public course with a buddy on a busy Sunday afternoon. Wait on every shot. Group behind us hit into us once. We ignored it. The next hole they did it again. My buddy pulled out a club and hit their balls into a water hazard. The didn't hit into us again.

Last summer I accidentally hit towards the group in front at my home club. Only realised they were out of sight in the tree line on a dog leg when I got near my ball which had gone fairly close to them. I said “sorry mate, I didn’t realise you were still there” and he replied “don’t worry, I should have left my bag in the fairway while we were looking so you could see we were there”. 
Then we had a god chat about football in the beer garden at the end of the round. Hopefully this encounter represents 99.99% of these situations....

Playing with my Dad and get paired with two of those guys, you know you won’t like. For me maybe three -five guys in forty years of playing were that objectionable ? 5Th hole I tell guy ,  The green is downhill and he can reach the group in front. So he hits into them anyway. The green is close to trees so we don’t see guy waiting behind them.  I drop my dad at his ball and I’m first to get to guy. He is MagnusVonMagnusMountain of muscle. Flaming red hair and 6’5”. He’s tomato red and angry. I get a lump in my throat and bark,” don’t say a word to me, do not talk to that man, he’s my father, We did not hit into you, that guy did and We don’t know him”.  Magnus shakes my hand, says thank you walks back to the jerk, who we did not see the rest of the day. He was encouraged to go home. Lol

I have one I'm kind of ashamed of because I lost my temper but the ball almost hit my wife. 

 

The story:

 

Literally the first hole at my home course on a packed weekend. The first hole is a dog leg left. Its busy so instead of going driver and putting heat on the group in front I hit a five iron to the corner and we get to the dogleg and are waiting for the foursome to clear. No big deal. Its slow. I'm with my wife and we will have a decent time on a busy day either way.

 

Wife is on the left edge of the fairway, I'm dead center at the 150 marker. After a minute or two of waiting a ball literally lands a few yards from my wife in the air and rolls past us. I look back and a father and son are teeing off thinking we are not paying attention. 

 

I grabbed my five iron and smacked the ball back at the teebox in the general area, put my club in my bag and started making the trek to the teebox thinking I'll be fighting someone in a few seconds. I'm screaming "There is a group on the green. You almost hit my wife. We can't go anywhere we've hit one shot!" (Obviously screaming with some expletives mixed up). I'm seeing red and just ready to start going at the dad. I'm by no means a tough guy or a confrontational person but I'm seeing red.

 

I get to the edge of the box still livid and the father apologized and backtracked and blamed it on the punk teenage son hitting when he was getting his gear ready. They seemed pretty embarrassed. We never saw them again and I got the vibe they had done that type of thing before trying to set a tone and make people move at the pace they want. There literally was no place to go as we had hit one shot haha. It wasnt like we were on the 15th and holding up players all day. 

 

About as close as I've been and I'm not proud of it...But I would do it again. Golf balls can kill people.

Funny, this exact same situation happened to me a couple of months ago.  Except it was my wife and my 4 yr old son, just out with me for some fresh air.  I lost it on the snowbird retiree after they drove up on me (AFTER almost hitting my family) and the guy was waving his arms aggressively and yelling at me.

About 25 years ago at my old club in NY.

 

2 guys who really didn't like each other much got a little heated before the round. As luck would have it they ended up on the same team that day.

 

One was a bull of a guy, 55 years old. You know the type. About 5'10", stocky and did manual labor all of his life. Very muscular. The other guy was considerably younger, about 30. Not a gym rat nor a weightlifter but he did go to the gym. A hockey player too. Probably about 6'2".

 

The 6th and 7th fairways run in opposite directions separated by just a few trees. I'm in the middle of the 7th and we here some yelling on the 6th. It was those 2.

 

I looked over and they pushed each other. The younger guy took one punch right at the older guy's chest. Down he went. A 1-punch "knockout" and play resumed.

 

I forget what penalties, if any were handed out but I assume it was a 2-4 week suspension for both of them. Thankfully nothing like that ever happened again.

90% of the time it's someone opening their mouth in anger instead of trying to diffuse the situation in a calm manner. 9% of the time it's a bad reaction from someone else for a mistake that didn't hurt/kill anyone. 1% Randomness.

During my career we arrested several people over the years for different things that happened on golf courses. Theft, battery, ADW - the list is long. People don't magically turn into nice citizens because they put on funny clothes and attempt play golf. If they are dirtbags off the course the will likely act like one on the course. You never know what kind of person you are fixin' to get tough against. They may back down or they may pull out a knife and stab you. If someone hits into you put their ball on a tee and hopefully they will get the message. If they don't call the pro shop and have an employee deal with them.

Many years ago down in Oklahoma my group and I had a very unpleasant golfing encounter involving a football coach.

 

An outside tournament was being held at our home course, so we went over to play at the local muny. The front nine was backed up, so I asked a clerk in the clubhouse if we could tee off No. 10. He said yes.

 

We played down 10 and hit our drives on 11, and a big guy in a cart comes over from 10 fairway and yells at us for cutting in front of his group. From his school golf shirt and the name on his bag, I could tell he was the offensive line coach from a local high school.

 

I told him the clerk said it was OK. Football guy said the clerk was not the starter, and had no authority to let us tee off. I countered that he was a football coach, not a course employee.

 

He got out of his cart and said, "You really should walk off the course." I replied that he was creating slow play and needed to return to his own fairway. The three of us then turned our backs on him, and played into the green.

 

He went back and played his hole, and rolled up to us again as we went up to 12 green and yelled something like "You haven't heard the last of this!"

 

We played on, and fortunately didn't see him again.

I once played golf with a buddy, and we got paired up with another twosome.  The two guys were dressed casually, had 30yr old bags, and were noticeably new to golf.  I try not to judge a book by the cover, but with the tattoos and their general chit chat back and forth, I wasn’t expecting a “fun” round.

 

I was wrong, they were decent guys, knew their limits, hit a bunch of shots, shanked a couple, hooked the other, but generally good natured and kept pace.  Fine by me.  

on a short par three, the elevated green has maybe 15-20yds of relief all around and then it funnels down to sparse trees.  If you hit one poorly, shank one, or blade a shot, it can end up through the trees and find its way to  a tee box. One of the guys did just that, bladed a shot, and toward the tee box with people on it. I yelled fore , my buddy yelled fore.  We get up to the green and one of the guys on the tee starts yelling.
 

 Talk about flipping the switch....Both dudes throw down their putters and something changes, “I don’t give a $$$k, let’s do this now.  I’ll this and that. We’ll take you and your buddies”,  they get to about 10ft apart, very uncomfortable.  Things de-escalate after more pleasantries, we finish the hole, and on the next tee box...... both guys apologize profusely for the last hole.  We finish the round and go our separate ways.
 

Never seen that kind of “fight” response in people.  Like ears pinned back, eyes go black kind of rage and then back to joking and goofing off.

I would have went nuts the entire time. Said alright man hit the ball. Would have called the pro shop on myself.

over 12 green into 6 tee, dropped guy.  Friend charges me, wedged him solid left knee, sick blow.  Cart lady zooms up, holding her phone in evidence.  Guy I hit gets up, whacks device away, launches at me.  We go tumbling down, ketchup all over us, looks like a death fountain.  Knocks me out.  Finish my round, wait in parking lot.  Guy finally needlessly arrives, about 60 punches thrown between the 2 of us. I'm so enraged at this point, get into my truck, try to run him over.  Miss repeatedly.  Accidentally hit the original cart girl.  Cops come, spend 3 days in Riverdale.  Met my fiance.  Worst part was bending my wedge shaft.
