Distance Irons Gapping - Mizuno 921 Forged

Recommended Posts

Hey, so I got fitted by Mizuno and it was overall a good experience. I was fitted the 921 Forged with KBS $ Taper 130 X shafts.  I was consistently flying the 31 degree 7 iron 192 according to their launch monitor.  I had 4 right on top of one another.  My spin was low around 4800. (4400 with the c taper)

I hit my 50 degree vokey 130. What is my gapping gonna be like 130-190?  Is that even playable? Swing speed with the 7 iron was 93.3 mph. Tempo 6/9, toe down 5.67/9, kick angle 7.33/9, release factor 7.67/9.  I don’t play enough to consistently hit the weaker lofted Tours or MP MMCs. I play the MP 25s now and struggle to center it when I take time off in the winter.

any thoughts or input appreciated!

You may have to tweaks the lofts slightly based on your actual results, but it appears you would have 12-13 yards between clubs which seems to be pretty nice gapping.

The 22yrd gap between your 8i / 9i based on these yardages could be an issue... 10-15yrd gaps between irons tends to be a good rule of thumb. Tweaking some of your lofts would likely be a good place to start.

Agreed. That's an example of bad math on my part...

It should have been:

My friend you and I are in the same boat. I picked up the 921 forged irons about a month ago. Me and you must have a very similar swing speed because my 7 and 52 fly the same as your distances. And with that 7 iron distance being about 15 yards longer than my older iron set, I had the same concern, that’s a large yardage gap to cover from 7 to 52*.  If it becomes an issue I’m going to do some loft tinkering. I was considering something like this to get closer to the tour lofts:  4 23. 5 26. 6 29. 7 33. 8 37. 9 41. P 45

Y'all do know this is stiff and below page...might not get a lot of comments here, as most in this space prob hit 7 irons 140-160. 🙂

Great numbers though! Agree w/ above - 12yard gaps or so should work great.

If I were you, I’d want to spin my 7 iron more than 4800.  31 is pretty strong for a 7.  If you were ordering Ping, you may be a good candidate for their retro lofts so you can get a forgiving head with some loft.  The Mizunos can be bent, but I don’t know how much before it changes how the club plays.

Personally, I wouldn’t play a set with 7 iron as my 192 club, but i don’t have your speed. I’m probably around 86ish with a 6 iron. I tried the P790 Ti once and was getting similar numbers as you...useless, for what I was looking for.

What iron would that be? Ping i210?

With your speed and need for spin with some forgiveness, yes I think i210 would be the place to start. The 7 iron is 33 standard and 35 with retro spec.

Are you hitting that distance on indoor mat launch monitor our outside on the grass?

That made a huge difference for me. I am in honeymoon with 921 Forged but saw some difference with turf reaction. Nothing bad just different for me.

Your mileage may vary.

It’s the lack of spin that’s terrifying and how many fliers there will be. I imagine my true outdoor yardage will play more 187 than 192. I’m working on lowering my dynamic loft because I’m hitting the ball too high with not enough spin.

If decent angle is steep enough that is ok spin. I have no issue stopping and even backing up T200 with that level of spin since it lands steep enough. Absolutely no issue with fliers either, so I think clubs are getting better. Now the hollow bodies like p790 are different story but I think it’s more about the spring of the face than loft.
