Casa Grande

Our foursome is driving from the PHX to our AirBnB in Tucson and thought we might want to play a quick 9 on the way down to warm up for the nicer courses near Tucson. I've always wanted to check out the courses in Casa Grande but the reviews aren't great. The last post on this was in 2014 so I thought I'd start a new one. Is Mission Royale still the best of the worst and is it still open? Off topic, how is Quarry Pines and does it have a driving range? Looked like a nice warm up course for our first day if we don't play 9 on our way down. Thanks!

Mission Royale closed on Jan 1.  It was run into the ground by bad operators.  It’s heartbreaking because it was a good design, and there is enough market for it.  If someone tries to open it again, they have a lot of dead turf to replace.  
 

Robson Ranch would be a nice warmup.  It’s in very good shape.  The design is nothing special but it’s the nicest course in town.

Quarry Pines (which is basically on the NW side of Tucson and not Casa Grande) does have a range. (Closed per Arizonalefty59 below). The course in Eloy that you could see from I-10 (Grande Valley?) closed down, as did the course in Arizona City.

 

Dave White is a cheap muni in Casa Grande. The Francisco Grande resort course is still there.

 

Maybe play 9 at Silverbell, a Tucson muni on the NW side of the city right off I-10?

 

I can't comment on recent conditions on any of these courses. Most recent I played one was Silverbell last winter, and it was in good shape then.

I played Mission Royale about a week before it closed and man oh man it was the worst conditions I have ever played on, knew it was bound to happen. It sucks because I used to play there a lot and it was a super fun layout. Sad to see it gone. 

 

I would stay away from Quarry Pines, it's a Mickey Mouse course design. They actually closed their range about a year ago due to them losing a law suit to the new apartment housing that was built next to it. 

 

I would suggest Silverbell, it's in solid shape right now. Great practice facility setup too.
