620 CB vs JPX 921T

Recommended Posts

After trying 10+ different sets in 2020, I've decided to stop the buying and selling and get professional fit. I've had two fits the past two weeks, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor, as I wanted to verify the results of the first with some turf interaction.

After both fits, two different fitters, my optimal fit indoor was the JPX 921T (Project X 6.5), when I went outdoors, the optimal was the 620 cb, (Project LZ 6.5).

My numbers were very similar with both, once they were tuned to my swing, the indoor session they didn't have a 620 cb / mb for me to try, but the second best option for me was the T100.  After hitting both, both felt great and looked great, I'm just curious if anyone has had any time with both or has tested either?

I would recommend the T100s over anything unless you pure the ball every time, even then I would go with the t100.  I played titleist CBs for 5 years and jpx tours for 3 years.  Both are much more unforgiving than people give them credit for which is a good thing for some, but go into that knowing that.

For me the CBs maintained spin much better than the jpx tour.  I recently just switched to the p7mb because the launch and spin on my jpx tours were a little inconsistent on the course even though I absolutely love the look and feel.

With regards to this topic and I know this might seem out of left field a bit especially since i have not hit a single shot with either of these irons, indoor or outdoor, I have hit the 919 tours off a mat on the simulator and love them but i too worry about the reality of playing a full set of these on the course as they cant be that forgiving.  Which brings me to my point, I am a JDM or Japan forged golf club and especially iron enthusiast or you could say worshipper and for me there are sooo many choices for irons when you combine all the Japanese irons and the sets sold here.

Okay actually now I have arrived at my point and I will suggest a solution to the guy struggling to decide.  I am assuming that the guys who commented above have not tried any Japan made irons because the thing is what I love the most about Japanese forged irons is the fact that with their clubs I can get a thin topline, fairly thin soled, forged cb, even a forged cb thats not multi material like titleist cb, basically in Japan a forged, butter soft and truly players looking iron can be as forgiving as an absolute chunky clunker of an iron here.  So to this guy I would suggest either throwing both options away and trying to some Japan models or a good experiment would be trying the JDM or Japan market version of the Titleist cb and JPX tours youve been testing and the reason why is I used to have a set of TItleist 690cb that were the JDM version and they were soft and forgiving then I tried a friends 690cb's which were domestic North American ones and I was like what are these rocks.

That's interesting - I played PX 6.0 from 2006 to 2017.  Also have a few PX LZ 6.0 shafts that I tested for a few months in 2018.  They are very different profiles regardless of flex.  Project LZ is for a very specific swing style.  Also, since I have a set of 620CBs and 620MBs and a blend of those 2 sets in my bag, 620CB are more like MBs.  620CBs were specifically designed to match up with MB's and purposely made to allow separation between CBs and T100's.

I could be way off but I was under the impression the PX and LZ are somewhat different profiles?

Could be the two heads in your hands produce different launch conditions?

921 you may need the lower spin and launch of the PX.

T100 you need mid launch and spin characteristics.

I would say if they had same or really similar numbers choose the one you like best. I currently have the 919T but could easily game the T100.

Have fun.

Weird question... I currently play 716CBs and am looking to upgrade to either the 620CBs (most likely the newer 2021 model when they release) or the JPX tours (or possibly MMC). Does anything think the matte finish on the JPX tours makes it look less premium compared to the glossy CBs and MMCs?

I had both 921 tours and t100s. I tested the 620cb and mb a few times. The t100s I find far more forgiving. I however, did not think the t100 was much more forgiving while being fitted. It wasn’t until Ihad my fitted set and compared them to my 921t that I realized this. I would think a t100s with the LZ would be an interesting choice. I would go back to the outdoor range and retest the 620cb, 620mb, t100, t100s and the 921 tours.

fwiw I was in your basic situation, a bunch of iron sets and shaft switches last year. I ended up ordering t100s though my heart said get 620mb’s. While waiting for the t100s I grabbed a set of 921t’s. When the t100s came I immediately knew the tours were being sold. The only thing I regret is not getting the t100s bent 1 weak from the factory. I may still get it done,  though.

I will not be buying another set of irons this year, I have never felt like such a disappointment to GolfWRX as I do now saying that.

the LZ shaft should also not fit my swing but I actually hit them quite well, some shafts just feel right to people.

Havent hit the 921t, but i came from the 900t into the 620cb. You are really splitting hairs in my opinion. Very very similar irons. The 620cb will have a tad smaller blade length, topline, and less offset. But again, its marginally. I personally  prefer the 620cb to my old 900t. Crazy, but the 620 felt better(softer). Cant say if the 921t is any different. The t100 is a different animal in my opinion, bigger blade, wider sole. They look fantastic for such a forgiving club but they will not play like either the 921t or 620cb
