Changing Weights for Forgiveness

good afternoon,

 

in regards to the esx 220 fairway, will changing the rear weight to something heavier generally increases loft and forgiveness, or is that a gross simplification? Any feedback is appreciated,

Not really familiar with that club but in general you don't want to add weight just to try and increase the MOI (forgiveness) of a club.   Sure moveable weights can be manipulated to try and do that but that's very different than changing the actual head weight.

 

It's MUCH more important and it will have a much greater effect on the results that the total head weight (or swing weight) is a good fit for you and your swing.   Small amounts of weight wont result in any noticeable change to the head characteristics (such as c.g. location and MOI) and if you add enough to make a difference the total head weight will increase to the point where the effects will be detrimental to the feel and your swing.

 

Now if you haven't ever really been fit for swing weight, it couldn't hurt to go play around with adding some lead tape to make sure you really are playing the best head weight.  But finding the best feel and getting the best results is all about the head weight, not the placement or anything else the weight might do.

Agreed. Weight in a club comes from two places- the grip and the head. If you either weight the head too heavily (or light), or counterweight the head improperly, you can really screw up your timing and then compensate- especially if you're a feel player.
