Has the Golf Channel and PGA Tour radio become unwatchable/unlistenable? (NO POLITICS)

Golf Chanel is was too political for me.  Turns me off because I don't want to hear it.  The on air personalities have gotten unbearable.  Not a fan of Hack, Williamson (he was ok as a side kick back in the day when Holly Saunders was on), Paige (Horrible), Cara (absolutely awful), Reimer (used to like him until they turned him into a stooge), Robert Damon (he was ok).

Scott Bacon is a hack.  Do not like listening to him or his content at all.

I like the Paulson show on XM.  McGinnis and Katrek are on too late, I do enjoy them at times.  Liked it better when they had separate shows.  The killer for me was when they started dumping guys like Hank Haney for controversial comments.  I enjoyed listening to Haney just for his take on things.  I love Fred Alberts voice on the live coverage.

Agreed on Scott Bacon. I hear he had spelling issues too.

It's not.  Not even close.

Maybe not THE wittiest, but better than...some?

The first mistake is trying to make the studio look like ESPN.  We all know it is in the same compound as ESPN, but dang at least the studio in Florida looked like it was golf related.  Now it looks like every other local news studio.  Completely horrible.

Golf Today is pure hot garbage.  Extremely boring, way too political, the hosts try to act like they are far superior, and "growing the game" garbage.  We play golf to escape the world's problems and get out into the great outdoors.

The Big Break was a great show that people actually looked forward each week.  Highway 18 was a great Amazing Race style show about golf but only lived for one season.  Charlie Rymer did a great show about east cost golf courses.  Now we get garbage commentary until Thursday when golf tournaments are shown.

I give GC another few years before NBC pulls the plug and GC goes the way of Speed Channel.

I used to watch a lot of Golf Channel and now I only watch the live golf or the prior day's round if I missed it live.  I've heard way more cool content in three episodes of the no laying up podcast than I've heard in ten years of Golf Channel but I think GC is in the tough spot of having to please the PGA Tour.  I love inside knowledge and hearing inside stories from caddies but I just don't think the Golf Channel would get away with putting out that kind of content.

The three weekly shows I would run is a gambling/fantasy show, a tour insider equipment show, and an interview show with the caddies.

Michael Breed was very direct about the fact the GC suits are missing the fact these podcasts have large numbers of people following, yet, nobody there wants to even dare going there.

The attempt to get everyone on Golf Pass has failed miserably.  It's always wonderful when people who have ruined something else decide they are smarter and will bring their "success" to a new "project."

Preach.  That was my point above with the attitude I now hear in the commentary.

I made the point up thread about how the studios are completely devoid of golf-related items so you are on-target with that.

However you are way off the mark in saying the studios are "in the same compound as ESPN". ESPN is located in Bristol, outside of Hartford. NBC Sports are in Stamford, outside of NYC, about 70 miles apart.

Without saying what about, but it's been alluded to, I was surprised while eating breakfast at what I was hearing and went out to the living room where the TV was on thinking I hadn't selected the Golf Channel - nope, it was GC and a healthy dose of non-golf political discussion.  Hmmm.

That seems to be happening more and more in sports media in general. ESPN has been guilty of it for years and now that has started to spread. I'm in Canada, and our ESPN equivalent is TSN (ESPN is a minority owner) and even they have started to do the same thing. When the 7PM Sportscentre comes on and the host starts delivering political news and commentary you know its time to switch off or change the channel. Why sports channels think they are qualified to offer such commentary or that it is what their viewers tune in to hear is a complete mystery.

I think the conversation of whether they are qualified is just ignored via the pressure to be able to say to advertisers/potential critics and boycotters/you name it, that they've supplied the content.  It may all be sincere, fine, but the cynic in me sees a checklist for the day/week/month for certain types of segments and tracking them diligently.  We're talking TV execs after all, lol.

Just IMO and I'M NOT DISCUSSING THE POLITICS OF ANY PARTICULAR ISSUE!

my apologies for being off geographically.  I obviously read everything incorrectly.

On another note, Jamie Diaz is just plain boring to watch.  Damon Hack is well, a hack.  The personalities of the talking heads is as exciting as plain oatmeal.  There is nothing attracting views.  Their entire Race in Sports "growing the game" segment did the exact opposite.  I am not too sure there are tons of cable viewers who wake up and say, "heck, I am going to turn on the Golf Channel today and see what they have to offer".

The suits are definitely killing the vision that Arnie started with.  I would rather hear from guys that have been on the tour like Robert and Charlie.  The programming is just extremely stale.  Heck, I enjoyed my time in South Korea and watching their three different golf channels more than watching the "new" Golf Channel, and I didn't understand a single word being said except "birdie", "par", "bogey", and "nice shot".

The Golf Channel will only see ratings on Thursday and Friday unless they carry the tournament on Saturday and Sunday too.

And even then, they'll only show the featured groups, not the lesser knows players.

Friday is my fav day to watch a tour golf event.  Half the field hasn't been cut, and  you can follow the golfers without the huge followings.

I think the best thing on Golf Channel is the European Tour coverage. It's refreshing to hear announcers just describe the golf and focus less on trying to "manufacture a storyline." I found a few broadcasts on youtube and it was so refreshing to just watch golf.

+1...Love the European Tour coverage too, it’s awesome!! I love the Golf Channel personally, I just watch the tournament coverage and the occasional movie/documentary...it’s great for that to me!

Damon Hack and Jaime Diaz are not good on TV. At all. Jaime is a really good writer and maybe Hack was as well, but on TV? No.

Golf Today gets a thumbs down from me. Waste of time. The political commentary is just the icing on the cake for me to not touch that show with a barge pole. I've never understood the logic of producers who enthusiastically produce content that will anger a large segment of their viewership. Not a good business plan.

I agree about Justin Leonard.

I mean, where is it written that the "expert" has to comment and judge EVERY shot played by a golf pro?   I can see the blasted screen.  I can judge for myself.

Don't talk.   You're bringing nothing.

And here I am hammering Justin Leonard.   But everyone is doing it.  Heck, Lanny Wadkins is worse.   The real bad guys on this are the directors / producers.

This is the biggest peeve I have about golf coverage.   Them trying to create drama where there isn't any.

Agreed.  They must be paid by the # of words spoken hence the incessant babbling. 🙂

completely unwatchable! can't even turn on the new replacement for MD. Used to have it as background in the mornings, but too political, just a horrible vibe. Just going to record golf and pass through the commercials and GC bs.

Watching GC the last 2 weeks and there’s lots of fresh new commercials for 2021, Lol! Haven’t seen “The Hammer” or “Better than most” once yet...looks like their advertising sales guys brought in some new contracts!
