Calling All Gamblers...Season Long and Single Round Game Ideas?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any games they play with buddies that are season long or extend multiple rounds?  Can be with 1 other person or a group.  Also trying to think of some new fun games to throw into the mix for 2021 on top or instead of our usual games we play during the single round.

We have a good group of guys who like to play $ games to keep it competitive and have a mix of guys from +3 to 10 handicaps.  So it's tough to balance games that work best with such a range of handicaps.  But all handicaps are legit as we make sure each other enters scores.  Never have more than 1 group playing at a time.

Season Long

For 2 people we have done a birdie game.  First person to birdie every hole on the course.  You must be playing with the other person for it to count.  Eagles you get to pick another hole at the conclusion of that round to mark off.  Last year I had like 3 holes to go with 3 months and couldn't finish it.  We didn't play much golf together and I couldn't get a birdie on the last par 3 so no one won in 2020.

For a group we also play a yardage game where anytime you hole out for par or better from off the green without using a putter is $1/yard from anyone you're playing with that day who's in the game.  There is 6 of us who always have this game automatically going so we added into the mix whoever has the most yards total at the end of the year gets a bonus $100 from each person.  It makes for some fun decisions and giving guys a hard time when you have to decide to belly the wedge from just on the fringe and go for the yardage $ compared to whatever other game we're playing 🤣

Single Round

We usually play singles nassau all around.

Also play point game when there is 3 or 4 people (9 or 16 points).  Last year we added in whoever was in last place for points could press.  That got a little wild when points were up to $8 or $16 each the last few holes.  Made for some big $ swings and tough with such a range of handicap players on bump holes.  It reset to $1/point after 9 holes.  But #9 is #1 handicap hole so two guys with + handicaps would always just try to hold on when points where worth the most.  We decided on ditching the press idea.

-One thought I had here was if you birdie it doubles the points but that isn't fair to higher handicaps.  I saw someone say if top player beats 2nd place by 2 strokes they get all the points.  This was in 9 point game with 3 players.  But not sure if this then swings advantage to guys with strokes as they have best chance for this on their bump holes.

4 players we have done 2v2 and 5 point game.  Low ball, low total, proxy, and gross birdie.  Get all 4 get bonus 5th.  Partner also birdies get 10 points.  Throw in roll and re-roll on the tee box.  Basically first tee hits and after tee balls other team can roll (double points for that hole).  Then 2nd team hits and they now have the option to re-roll and double it again.  Or first team can roll before they hit their tee balls.  This works best with similar handicap teams which we don't have often.

Left/Right.  Basically the above game but partners are chosen from the 2 left balls off the tee and the 2 right balls.  This lasted a month this spring but a few guys didn't like it.  Made for some interesting tee shots from the 4th player avoiding someone else.  But didn't really reward the player who played best often enough.

1v1 we have played roll/re-roll.  Basically $5 skin on each hole, no carry over.  With the option to roll and re-roll on the tee box.  With additional 2 presses per side for each player.  Birdie doubles it too.  This can get interesting if you want it too.

We don't like wolf or skins.

Game of choice for my group is usually 10/10/20 nassau with inner foursome Vegas.  With 3-4 groups it gets interesting and you can win/lose a little or win/lose a lot.

Season-long we do a birdie bet like you mentioned, 1st to birdie every hole wins (all birdies must be attested, no gimmies).  We don't put money on this one but we all go out to dinner at a restaurant of the winner's choosing with the wives and the winner/wife gets meal, drinks, whatever paid for.

Season-long mega bonus:  Can be adjusted based on handicap and score but about 8 of us have a handicaps within the same range.  We all throw in $250 and the first one to break par at our home course, or comparable course from back tees, takes the pot.  All putts in the hole, attested.  The kicker here is that you have to announce the mega bonus on the 15th tee box, sending a text to the whole group.  Between making the announcement and the final 4 holes at our course being brutal, no one took it in 2020.

We have not played Vegas before so will definitely try that out.

I like the idea of your season long mega bonus. Will have to think of a way to incorporate variations of that with wider range of handicaps. I bet announcing on 15 gets to be a blast.

Instead of 6-6-6, we play 3-3-3-3-3-3. Essentially you play with each of the other 3 guys for 3 holes, twice. Instead of 6 holes and then sometimes being blocked out of a win with 4 holes left. So basically, it's high/low with your partner plus an additional point is available on every green to the person closest to the pin. If that person 3 putts, the next closest gets a chance. Most points win. We also always have $2 birdies in play and $7 eagles.

I too would like to get into a year long game. We have done low net card for the year in the past.

  • 1 month later...

My Tuesday league partner and I have a year long bet for our golf league. Its handicapped based on the league handicap. $5 per round. Plus we have the option to call a longest drive, CTP, basically any bet you can imagine during play for whatever amount, but the other person has the option to decline (fyi, often does lol). We also have the option to press the entire amount at anytime, key to that is if you don't WIN the press, you owe double what the current amount is and it has to be paid out that day and the counter goes back to zero. We keep it friendly. I think the most one of us lost was about $60 and it was on a press of the entire pot. We have won our league many times. I really feel like us competing against each other makes a pretty big difference in the quality of golf we using produce.
