Farthest off the green you have used your putter?

Recommended Posts

This past summer I was stuck under a tree with very low branches skirting around the edges. The tree was at the top of a slope that ended at the fringe of the green, and was about 80 yards from the front edge. Not having the option of elevating the ball to carry to the green, I used my putter to take advantage of the slope and putted it on from there to about 25 feet from the pin. It was an extremely difficult green and I ended up 3 putting for a double, but nonetheless, I putted on from 80 yards out and the ball ended up on the green. Any situations where you have used the putter in more extreme circumstances?

109 yard par3. Done it about 12 times. I am going to guess 1000 other guys on the board have hit that particular shot. (13 hole Bandon Preserve)

Not me, but this is the first video amongst the many on youtube of putting on this hole:

Not me but a playing partner at the Old Course holed out from about 100 yards with a putt. He had been playing something awful, and eventually gave up on trying bump and runs and whatever else the caddie was telling him to play, and so they decided to putt this one and he holed it.

What’s even funnier?  I played from just a few yards back of him just prior to his shot and hit a good wedge that did exactly what the caddies warned me against...bounced on a downslope and rolled over the back of the green and caused a bogey. They told him to putt it almost as a joke, and almost to show me what they meant by running it up there. I had to laugh when it rolled in.

I was not having a very good day several weeks ago and I putted my tee shot on the 110 yard uphill 13th hole.  I got it on the green and then two putted for my par.  Or maybe that was a three putt?  A few years ago I putted from 100 yards out under the trees left of the 16th fairway.  I got that one on the green and two putted for a par there also.  LOL from under the trees with a putter I don't have to worry about the ball jumping off of the face too high and catching a tree limb.

The 11th hole at the course I grew up playing has about 75 yards of a steep downslope to the green. The green is three tiers, putting it is the best option when it’s dry and firm during the summer to get to the first tier.

375 yards.  Tired of sh*nking all over the back 9 so on 18 teed off with putter (Romeo said you can't sh*nk a putter).  200 down the middle.  Putter from 170 to the fringe.  Two putted for par.

The farthest I've tried is from about 5 yards off the green. I just don't have a good enough sense of how fairway will effect the putt's speed.

I'm in Florida where the fairways are closely mowed and there really is no rough. I played with a guy Wednesday who consistently putted everything from 75 yards or less. For the most part it was effective!

I find it very interesting how much more common (at least from what I thought)  putting from longer distances really is. I my OP, I was somewhat forced to putt from the 90 yards out, and was able to make it on the green. I have also putted from about 5 yards off the green and butchered the shot up in terms of distance. I find it difficult having the 'golden touch' putting from the fairway or even the fringe. I guess I don't practice it enough.

Couple yards tops.  I used to putt out of bunkers provided the lip would allow it.

When they held the Buick Open at Warwick Hills GCC in Michigan some years back, I watched Gary Nicklaus, Jack's son, put from outside of a greenside bunker, through the bunker, and onto the green, quite successfully I might add. If I remember correctly, the pin was short sided and Gary chose the putter to reduce the odds of messing up the hole. The bunker was quite flat in phycal character, which allowed him this attempt'

Grass conditions would have to be quite unique for me to consider putter from 15' off the green, much less 80yds like the OP.  That's just not in my head.  I do believe that when we chose putter from off the green we're not trying to make it, but hoping to get it close and that a blade of grass won't knock it offline.

If I was facing 50yd+ to the green and heavy overhanging branches, affecting my ability to fly the ball to the green, I do what I have done in the past.  Hood a mid to long iron, put the ball back in my stance, and hit a low 2' high punch and run shot.

Not too long ago, I did it with 130yds left, only my ball was on a severe uphill angle with tree at the top and branches hanging in my line.  I used a seriously hooded 5i, ball back in stance over right toe, unfinished 3/4 swing that hit the ball really low, enough to cover hill top and stay under branches, land 20yds short of the green and run to 12' of pin, missed the putt but saved par.  Damn, that's why I love this game.

Actually, as I mentioned in the OP, the low hanging evergreen branches were limiting me from any practical club selections, as they were almost scraping the ground. Pretty much any elevation I would have attempted would have caught the branches. What was in my favor was the steep, 50 yard long slope that led almost to the fringe of the green. I needed about 20 yards of distance to get to the slope which guided the ball onto the green. Maybe a hooded 5i 'might' have worked, but the putter was the better choice in this situation, after all, I pulled off an amazing shot to get it on the green to about 25' from the pin. I guess you would have had to be there in this very situation.

I wasn't criticizing your efforts, just stating how I see things, and that I look to create shots that others might not see or want to gamble on.
