Would it bother you if a stranger recorded your kid's swing at the range?

I seen it happen a few times I think though they were either tournament staff  taking pictures for promotions or college coaches.

I've also seen what I thought was random people watching a tournament and yes they are taking pictures and taking notes.  it turned out this person was part of a coaching staff at a college.

So the answer is it doesn't bother me.   Now if it was a random parent and they were not respectful and say bothering my kid I would have a problem but I just never seen anything like that.

It’s a violation of privacy. I would quickly quash that. There aren’t people out there actively recruiting 10 year olds.

I agree if you have some random dude taking a picture of 10 years old that is weird. But I have seen a lot tournaments hire a photographer for their events.

I also wouldn't worry about other parents taking pictures they may be just documenting who is there. A little strange but   again not something I would worry about.

I would think a random dude taking pictures of young kids though would be a problem anywhere and would be asked to leave.  This not something I have ever seen is there some problem out in California with a  random dude taking pictures? Maybe it's a guy doing a documentary???

Yes. Very much so, and I don't even have a kid.  Tournament would be a different setting as it may be covered by a local newspaper or something in line with the possibility of a photographer being contracted to provide pictures of the event.  Random day at the range or course?  Absolutely not unless given explicit permission by him/her.  But I am generally a private person...frankly, I'm kind of astounded by the amount of detail people are willing to put online about themselves.

I might be more sensitive to it since the cops busted a guy taking pictures of girls at my daughters gym last year. This is a zero tolerance policy for me.

Last year at a demo day, the ping rep recorded my son's swing.  I was more flattered than anything.

Another incident, a homeowner started taking pictures of my kids, because of an incident we had with his loose dog charging at my daughter(separate thread on its own).  Even though I was upset he took pictures of my kids, I know there was nothing I can do.

There is no laws prohibiting people from taking pictures of your kids in public space.

Now if a random stranger started recording my kids at a range?  That would make me feel uneasy at the least.

Did he strike a conversation and try to get to know us?  Then maybe less so.

I guess my answer is that it all depends on the context...

So the reason I'm asking.  A week or so ago, we decided to take all our kids to range just for fun.  This was one of those novelty ranges where people go just to bang balls.  Anyhow, I had all 4 of my kids hitting.  Even had my youngest hit a few.  He's 20 months and can hit it pretty good for his age.  In the next stall, there is a guy and his girlfriend hitting.  They finish hitting and are now just sitting on one of the benches.  Mind you, every stall was full so not sure why this couple was just sitting around instead of clearing out for the next person to hit.

Anyhow, My wife is there too and I hear her say please stop taping my child.  I turn around to see what she's talking about and it was the bf/gf next to us.  They had their phones out acting like they were texting with the screens pointed right at our youngest.    The guy gets really defensive about it and storms off with his girl yelling expletives.  Was the oddest things I witnessed at a driving range in a long time.

Not cool to record any kid at any age in that setting without permission. Perhaps not against the law, but very poor taste at the best.   Their reaction speaks volumes.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

I don’t think it is right to record or take pictures of anyone you don’t know, without permission from said subject. Legal or not, it is just basic courtesy to ask for permission first. If the person is really a coach or recruiter, he’d have no problem explaining his actions. It is really no big deal that your wife asked them to stop taping. Just a “oops, I am so sorry, I just thought the baby was cute” was enough of an explanation. No need to storm off yelling expletives unless they were up to no good.

20 months - good chance it was a college coach.

A little different but, in the same vein. I had my daughter who is 5 now at a golf travel show with me two years ago. At one of the booths I was talking to a rep when another rep at the booth pulls his phone and starts taking photos of my daughter.  I just looked at the guy like, WTF are you doing? He quickly put his phone away without a word. I asked him what was he doing? He replied your daughter is beautiful!..... in what I'll call a creepy way. I've never hit someone so hard in my life. When the cops arrived I explained why I hit him  The cops asked to see his phone......he had photos of 7 different kids on his phone. So I'm wary of people photoing or videoing my kid if it's not someone I know or family.

Good on you.  I can't see any reason for a stranger to take photos or video of a kid without permission unless they are a friend or family.  The whole pedophile issue is real.

What is the crime?

It is pretty creepy to take pictures of a random young kid.  People who do this are usually up to no good and if they are registered sex offender they will probably be arrested.   What Kekoa describe is not normal for sure. Everyone that is normal would never just take out a phone and take pictures of a young kid in public.

Seriously. See the post above urs. U can’t figure it out says a lot.

I think the OP handled it well, but my question stands.  To my knowledge what this person did it not illegal.  Now going to the manager of the range and reporting it could get the person thrown out and kept out since the business can make its own rules.

Undoubtedly those pictures are going to end up on the internet which is bad enough but also brings in possible trafficking if the location is known.
