Hybrid shaft - 90+ grams in Tensei Blue like profile...

Aviador Naval

Recommended Posts

Looking for a vector toward or recommendation for hybrid shafts in the 90-100 gram realm that are neither TX flex nor - more importantly - super tip stiff.

I’m currently using Tensei AV Blue but they max at ~80g and I want to shorten my shaft lengths to 38.25” and 39” for the two hybrids I play to cover the 3i through 5i slots in my bag.  I switch iron shafts occasionally but always end up in the 105g-115g range.

I’ve hit the AD-DI, it worked nicely, and I liked the feel.  Willing to spend the money for two shafts as this is an important area for my bag but am hoping for some alternative options to consider.

Thanks in advance.

PS - “go get fit” not an option in the coming months and not super critical here anyway as I know the weight I want and the general profile...

Thanks.  Atmos black a little stout for my swing.  Atmos HB Blue was good but a tad light.  Seem to recall the Ventus line is basically the Atmos line (color for color) but they stiffened the tip in each.  A tad concerned it may have gone too far for me.  Have you had chance to compare Atmos Blue to Ventus Blue?

the ventus is tip stiff but don’t be afraid of it. Everyone is getting fit into them even slower swingers.

and don’t be shy of the atmos black either it’s really not that stout of a shaft in the stiff profile (not Xstiff) I use one in my 4 iron UT

Look into the Ventus blue 9 or 10.  It's not overly stiff to the point where you will have trouble getting it up high enough or not spinning it enough to keep it in the air.  I've tested the blue and black in 10x and I like them better than what GD or MCA offers for their hybrid shafts.

Give the MCA MMT Hybrid in 90TX (101G) or 100TX (109G). Smooth but powerful.

@Aviador Naval Similar to you, i have a preference for the Tensei Blue profile.
At the ~90-100g weight profile you're seeking... have you considered the NS Pro 950GH or Modus3 105 steel shafts in your hybrids?

In a 2019 forum discussion w.r.t. similar hybrid shafts discussion,
@Howard_Jones had recommended the Accra Tour Z ST series?
i.e. Extract:
"I only have a few Accra models in my DB, and i cant find that model at Russ Ryden either, so i cant tell what its equal to, but BLUE BOARD seems to be kind of a "DynaLITE" steel wood copy, with a slightly softer mid section. (2.3%)

If BB is a profile that fits you, Black smoke is NOT the shaft for you, then Even Flow Blue is more in that direction. but still not the same. Aldila Tour Blue is like you describe, with a softer mid-section vs BB, and even softer than Tensei Blue.

The ACCRA model i can find at Russ Ryden "who sounds like it" is Accra Tour Z ST 55, 65,75,85 both M3, M4 and M6, and if thats the shaft, its not far from Aldila Tour Blue as EI profile (very soft mid compared to butt and tip)"

Very much appreciate the two links.  Regarding your suggestion on 950GH and Modus 105 - I have tried them both within the last week.  In fact, I currently own a TS3 @ 23 with the 950GH neo.  I’m in Japan for a spell.  Steel shaft hybrid options are standard, and the TS hybrids are on sale at very good prices.  I also hit the Nippon GOST in a demo head.

I did not like the Modus 105 - although it was in a Ping 425 head that felt quite firm and metallic.  May have been the head as the 425 felt bad with two separate graphite shafts as well.

I did like the Modus GOST but they only had one not in head I would use.  Per the store manager, it was the most popular TS hybrid shaft for them this cycle.  Plus, it is more than a brand new AD-DI or Ventus and both the graphite shafts are exactly the weight I’m seeking while the GOST in Stiff is a skosh light.

The 950GH neo was fine/good. I could certainly play it and it would be cheapest for me to go buy another TS hybrid off the shelf, keep the shafts, and sell the heads.  I may still do that...

I have taken a tensei blue out of my 23 hybrid ts2 and put in a modus 105 x flex 4 iron shaft in cut down to just shorter than 5 iron length and I am loving it.

I play 105 x soft stepped once in my irons and feel this works out well for me. Both in terms of feel and yardage gapping since the full length tensei shaft in the hybrid went too far for the gap I was looking to fill.

Great feedback - thanks.  Currently thinking same with Modus 120:  4i shaft cut to 38” for the 5i replacement and 2i shaft at 38.75” for the 3i replacement.  If I don’t like it, I’m out $70 for two shafts and can still go the AD-DI or Ventus route.

@Aviador NavalYou might be interested to listen to today's GolfWRX 'Club Junkie' podcast
(he talks about hybrid shafts (from ~25min mark), specifically
(a) the GOST,
(b) Ventus
(c) Project X Evenflow Riptide  (small-batch)

Mentions the Tensei (briefly, i.e. to say the questions he gets about hybrid shafts are primarily re the above 3 shafts & also the Tensei) but didn't go into further detail w.r.t. Tensei in this podcast.

I play the old reliable UST Mamiya Proforce V2 hybrid in X flex, which is listed at 90g. It claims to be a stiff tip design but it feels fairly active to me. This might fit your needs.

At those lengths have you thought of the Mitsu MMT 90 shafts? Been playing a blue board spec driver shaft for over a decade (from OG BB to latest AV Raw Blue and the current Atmos TS Blue) and was fitted to the MMT80S in my new hybrids and they feels very stable but ultra smooth...or very similar to my driver profile which is also similar to my irons consequently.

After rereading the original post, MMT 90S (98G) could be a winner. It’s not overly stiff or overly active. It’s just good! I put a MMT .370 90G untipped in my 19° Mavrik hybrid and I’ve never been so confident with my hybrid.

^^ great suggestions last two posts.  Thanks!

Fairway Jockey has the MMT .370 90S shaft priced at $60 plus shipping. That’s a steal of a deal IMHO.

Quick update to this post.  Yesterday I walked through a good sized retail shop with a large section of ‘used’ clubs and found an 818 H1 23 deg with an AD-DI 95-S at 39”.  It looked like the club had never hit a ball...  After a little horse trading, I walked out with it for less than $100 out of pocket and went straight to range/course to compare it to the 39” Nippon 950GH neo and Tensei AV Blue 70 hyb with 818 heads in both 23 and 21 degrees.

Short story:  Prior to yesterday I was dabbling in the “heavier shaft at equivalent iron length” for hybrids realm but now I am a complete convert.  The AD-DI was perfect in that it felt very close to an iron in the swing dynamic while retaining the impact sensation I’m used to from years of playing hybrids with graphite shafts.  Since I got the first one for a song, it’s now a pretty easy decision to accept the current price for a new AD-DI and simply order a second at 38.25” tipped 1” to use as 5i replacement.
