Who is the best Wedge/Short game player on PGA, European, or Champions Tour?

Recommended Posts

JT, P. Reed and Bryson DeChambeau.

Champions: Langer

Europe:  Molinari was good. Tommy Fleetwood?

Yeah, JT, Reed, and Langer have been popular pics so far and I agree with those 100% for sure! You’re the first to mention DeChambeau. I don’t usually think of DeChambeau as a good wedge player, but I guess to achieve the level of success he has, he’s got to be pretty good in that area.

I’ve never seen Molinari, but he’s been mentioned and will check him out. Fleetwood for sure is a good one!!

"Not Phil Mickelson...just because he's hit some memorable flop shots over the years doesn't make him great."     Best post of 2021!

This is something that we were talking about when we played last weekend. My vote would have been for Luke Donald. He got to World Number 1 based on his putting and ability to get it up and down. He w

Just to throw another name in, hardly a low baller as he's the current Champion Golfer of the Year, but Shane Lowry is pretty adept at most shots around the green. Lowry's probably as likely to hole a chip from just off the green as Ray Floyd was in his prime.

Here is some short game goodness from JT today in Hawaii.  Nice eagle by P Reed. 3 minute video.  Good short game shots by others.

Great stuff there...JT and P. Reed looked dialed in on Day 1 for sure!! Harris English is another guy who hasn’t been mentioned and seems like an under-the-radar guy, but he seemed consistently solid in most of the Tournaments I watched in 2020...

Why do you guys think there’s a perception by so many knowledgeable golf people (myself not included) that Patrick Reed is the best wedge player on Tour? Is it that he’s below average on accuracy with irons on approach shots and then is the best at scrambling from the rough/bunkers and getting up & down to save Pars?

for myself, I see the vast majority of my golf on TV. That means I typically only see Reed when he is in the hunt - he’s not a Tiger or DJ level star they show all the time.  So when he is playing well I have no doubt he is great, but given how often he contends and what his o real average is when he is off he must be off more than most to offset his “greatness” and come in right at the tour average for 50-125. Think he was 18.9 bag bs tour bag of 19.9, so slightly better than bag but still 59th

Depends on what we define as 'wedge play.'  If it's 40 yards and in and includes bunker play. Or if it's just 40 yards and in and not including bunker play or if shows from say 130 yards and in are included.

Mickelson is a good study. He can probably execute the most difficult shots with the best of them, but statistically he's usually in the 'pretty good' category.  People don't remember all of the bad flops he has hit or when he's tried to hit a nearly impossible shot when there were much safer options available and he failed.  Phil loves to chip with the wedge even on the fringe, but everything I've ever researched about it is if you're within 4-feet of the edge of the green you're better off putting than chipping.  In essence, the skill level appears to be there, but the decision making may hold Phil back from a statistical standpoint.

Jason Day is incredible from 40-yards in and is arguably the best bunker player on Tour.  Luke Donald is hard to beat as well. Jim Furyk doesn't get nearly enough praise.

Some lesser known guys when it comes to around the green are Steven Jaeger, Steve Alker, Bud Cauley and Kevin Na. Charles Howell III is really good, but doesn't get much credit for it.

We don't have much actual data on Rumford, but having watched him in person it's hard to believe that if his strategy is sound that he wouldn't be one of the very best.

I meant for any shots involving a wedge, so pretty much any shot from 120 yds and in, but you’re right that you can break it up into much more specific categories. I’ll definitely look up the guys you mentioned...awesome that there’s such a wide range of guys being brought up!

Short game to me has to include making the putt, right?

Right now Reed is as good as anyone.

Absolutely...putting should be included in short game to me. It doesn’t matter how many greens you hit or how close you get it to the flag if you don’t drain the putt!

P. Reed has been the most impressive to me as well...every time I watch him it seems like he’s converting Up & Downs and making incredible wedge shots and putts!

The problem with looking at all shots from inside 120 yards is that there are many players that are great from 60-120 yards and poor from inside 60 yards and vice versa.  It's two fairly distinct talents.  It's interesting to look at all shots from 120-yard and in, but the skillset may be different than what you were looking for.

For sure...no, you’re right. I was just looking to get insights from some veteran WRX’rs and compare that to what I have been seeing as someone newer to watching a lot of golf.

But you’re 100% right, you could easily break down the discussion into:

-Shots from 60-120

-Shots from 10-60

-Putting

-Bunker play

Could be totally different guys that are perceived as the best in those separate categories.

Tiger back in the early-mid 2000s was absolute money with his wedge game. I feel like as time's gone on and courses have gotten longer; and he's aged, he's much more of a pure iron striker compared to driver/wedge that most of the longer hitters have become.

Right now I would agree with the consensus pick of Patrick Reed.

After watching the US Open I don't know how many don't consider Bryson to be near the top. That rough was no joke and he kept parking the ball in spots to hit birdie putts.
Collin Morikawa also puts on a pretty good show.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
