Hatton, as I said, is a stud with his wedges...underrated

he hit them beautifully in the desert this weekend

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him win a major in the next few years...maybe this year

he is nails with the short clubs

glad to see him win

Yeah, he’s enjoyable to watch and has an excellent short game. The first few times I watched him, I couldn’t see past the histrionics and dramatic body language, but he’s a special player for sure!

This is something that we were talking about when we played last weekend. My vote would have been for Luke Donald. He got to World Number 1 based on his putting and ability to get it up and down. He was a short and crooked driver but somehow scored and competed on a more consistent basis that anyone else in the world for a ridiculous period of time inspite of the shortcomings that he would readily admit to having.

Quite whether his short game is at the level now though, I don’t see it and the numbers haven’t backed it up. Grudgingly, as will others, Reed’s is impressive. JT is sneaky impressive. His last few wins have been down to his long game getting him into contention and then his short game saving him when the driving and irons have become wild.

Special mention to Bret Romford over on the European Tour. His bunker play and chipping is a thing of beauty.

Taworn Wirachant on the Asian Tour was legendary.

He averaged 27 to 28 putts a round. He had 19 putts during one round verified by a European tour player.

He would train play or practise 12 hours a day 6 days a week.

I’m not even cool enough to laugh as awesome as Alex Norens laugh at the end, Let alone come close to chipping like that. If I had hands like that I’d be in tour or at least have a happy wife:)

That tip Alex mentioned that Brett rumFord shared with him about keeping the toe down is  a top that Brett did not include any of his how to videos, must be some little bit of gold he saves for tour players only, or I just didn’t do enough research on him. Pretty awesome stuff, tried it today, definitely easier to pick it off of tight lies

Late to this thread, but "short game" and "full wedge play" are completely different things.

You could probably separate this into at least three different categories:

1) All play within 30(?) yards of the edge of the green (regardless of where the pin is)

2) 40(?) to 79(?) yard shots

3) 80(?) to 139(?) yard play

Those are all different enough from each other, that you won't necessarily see a ton of overlap in tour stats.

One guy who used to be on the top of the best wedge players in the world list was Scott Hoch. He was a short, not very straight driver of the ball, but damn could he knock flags down from inside 150. Same with Johnny Miller back in his day. Trevino was legendary with full wedges, as well.

Top modern players in category 3 I would say would be Ryan Moore, Kevin Na, Jim Furyk, Webb Simpson(?).

Furyk has always been legendary in the "in between" yardage category, that weird "40 to 79 yard space that is tough for a lot of players, even elite players.

Around the greens, Patrick Reed and Tiger are the best I've ever seen. Mickelson is great, too, and just because he's flashy, doesn't mean he's not one of the best ever -- he is.

Yeah, P. Reed has been the clear #1 choice on this thread and he’s my choice as well.

I also agree that he’s got the physique of George Kostanza and the likability of Newman! 😜

Yeah, I labelled it “best wedge/short game player” just to create discussion and get everyone’s opinions on who they are inspired by within 130 yds. But I agree that it could be broken up into at least those 3 categories, and could also add:

4) Best from the bunker

5) Best putter

Some great mentions there for sure! P. Reed, Tiger, and Furyk have been popular picks...but you’ve mentioned some excellent dark horses!

I'm sure there are stats that say otherwise, but if I could pick one for myself, it would be Justin Thomas.

Spieth back in the day but he's lost a bit of his edge.

Yeah, JT has been a popular pick and one of my top picks as well. He’s fun to watch with a wedge in his hand...extremely surgical and precise!

Spieth has gotten quite a few mentions as well...unfortunately I didn’t get to watch him in his prime. Will have to look him up on YouTube.

Just watched some of his YouTube videos...in one of them Tiger calls him one of the Top 2-3 players of all time! 😮

Watching the European Tour this morning, they said that Reed won last week with hitting less than 60% of the greens. They said that was a first for a winner in PGA Tour history. And, he won by 5.

Wow, incredible stat. So is it that Reed is below average with his approach shots outside 130 yds, and he's the best with chipping and scrambling to score from off the green?
