I went from a SM4 60/8 TVD M (The TVD M was a great club, but during the rainy season it got really finicky) looking for a 58/12 D for little more bounce and a little less loft. Got fitted into the 58

SM8 58.12D here, and totally agree with the other comments regarding its versatility and ease of bunker use.

Had it in a 58 in the SM7 but now have it in the 54 in the SM8. It's pretty versatile. Great from bunkers but does everything. It's just a higher bounce M grind. In my Vokeys, I actually have a 54D and a 58M. I use the 58 out of the bunkers as often as the 54, although the courses I play don't generally have super fluffy sand.

I have it in 60 degrees and yes, it's my primary bunker club.  It's also the best bunker club I've ever owned, it's truly automatic.

I find it plenty versatile around the greens as well, very easy to manipulate the face w/ out the leading edge coming off the ground and the extra bounce gives it some really good forgiveness as compared to an M grind.  I don't really use it for full shots, mostly around the green (where required) and out of the bunker.

I've played the M grind and while it works fine in very firm/dry conditions, you really have to be precise in even "normal" conditions here in the midwest.  D grind has been a big upgrade for me and I don't see myself going away from it any time soon in the 60-spot.

Just replaced my older Vokey wedges (SM5) with a 54*S10 and a 58* D12.  I only played one round so far, but the 58* D12 was perfect out of the 2 bunkers I was in and definitely an improvement compared to my old 60* 8* bounce lob wedge for short sided shots.  Still need to experiment with it more, but the D grind seems very versatile!

I remember watching somewhere where Vokey talked about measures bounce only being part of the equation and that grind, sole width and camber also play a very big role in wedge versatility.

For those reasons, the D grind is much more versatile than the 12 degrees of bounce stamped on it would lead you to believe

I play a 54D, but use a Low Bounce K out of the bunkers. I use the D for just about every shot around the green

I just got a used SM8 58* S grind which I'm using for just about anything around the green including bunkers.  I'm wondering if I made a mistake not getting the D.  For those of you who have one, would you use the D grind if you were to play mostly out of bunkers that don't have really fluffy sand?  The traps on my course aren't hard but are more moderate in their firmness.  That is, you have some sand to work with and get under the ball but just not a lot.  I was originally thinking that for the conditions I play, the D grind might have more bounce than what would be ideal.  I'm now wondering if I was on target with that thinking.

I had SM7 58D then got a sm8 60S, and just went back to SM8 58D. Overall I prefer the D grind in the highest lofted wedge, I still play 54S and love that wedge

I see so many people with S-grinds in their 60 in the forums.  That is such a weird choice.  Did you guys get fit for it or does it just look good?  I’ve never seen anyone fit into the s-grind 60.  It rarely ever gets pulled out of the fitting bay.

I have a set of SM8 Ds for when my Vs wear out

My V:s wore out and I changed to D. They cannot even compare. V is so much better and versatile in every aspect.

I spent a fortune on some new V-grinds in the price range of a driver - best spent money ever. Unbelievable Vokey didn’t release V-grind for SM8, best grind ever!

Yeah I was afraid of that. DId you get the hand ground option through wedgeworks?

I was fit for 54S and 60S. I prefer the 54S much more than the 54F I was playing. After switching back to the D grind from the S grind in lob wedge I am happier so far

I play M in my sand a lob wedges but wanted to try D because of all the good things I’ve heard. I know a lot factors into the bounce, but everyone seems to talk about how precise you have to be for a lower bounce wedge making me think a high bounce D may be a touch more forgiving in the right conditions. Am I thinking about that right?

What loft(s) do you have for your D grind(s)?  I’m assuming this is your bunker club?  Thanks.

You are totally thinking right in regards to the D grind if you are a steeper swinger. Not the best grind though if you’re a sweeper.

I went from a SM4 60/8 TVD M (The TVD M was a great club, but during the rainy season it got really finicky) looking for a 58/12 D for little more bounce and a little less loft. Got fitted into the 58/10 S which hit about right in the middle. Out of the bunkers and around the greens the clubs were extremely close, but the S from the fairway was the decider. I am a sweeper playing in medium to medium soft conditions so the S was it for me. I also went from the SM4TVD 54/10 M to the SM7 54/10 S which was a no-brainer. Those 2 clubs were more alike than they were different and both are extremely versatile.

I think the difference for me would be if I was less sweeper and more digger the D would have been perfect. Funny enough that the old M grinds used to come in higher effective bounces than they do now and as they lessened the bounce they probably created the need for the D.

Here is the SM4 regular chart (TVD was a reduced M bounce) https://www.titleist.com/golf-clubs/wedges/spin-milled-sm4 versus SM8 https://www.vokey.com/wedges/sm8.aspx that shows how the M was more D than it is today.

I love my Vokey SM8 54-12D wedge.  Use it from 100 yds in. It’s so easy to open up for flop shots around the green, so I do all my chipping with it.  Very soft feel (raw model) and excellent distance control.

Love my 58D.  It's the best wedge in my bag.  I have a pretty steep swing so the extra bounce is perfect for me.  It is really my only bunker club.  I can manipulate the face really well with it and get the ball to do what I want. I do get the occasional skull with it but that's all operator error.

Yeah, I have an SM4 in 58-12, and even call it a D grind in my sig.  Great wedge.  Versatile enough for all but the firmest lies around the green, great from soft to medium-firm bunkers.  Confidence inspiring for fuller shots from soft fairways.
