Driver and I'm hitting it normal. Everytime I tee it low I suck.

For me that answer is yes.

YMMV

The reason I asked is that I wonder if there is a tendency to 'go down and get the ball' feeling that might cause some to put a descending aoa on their contact causing the backspin that produces a climbing shot?

Late last fall I picked up a Tour Edge Exotic Titanium E8 Beta 12* 3 wood from the bargain bin for $65. Playing into the wind was exactly why I bought it, seems to be a fairway finder so far. More testing come spring, that along with some i500's I purchased to replace the set I previously sold.  Loved the previous sets  power spec 4 iron off the tee, hopefully this very similar sets 4 iron rekindles that friendship.

If it's a long par 4 I'll just tee down Driver about a third as high as normally would, grip down, 3/4 swing and hit a little 10 foot high bullet out there. I can do it with a 3 wood too but it's easier with a driver.  For me it's much less stressful than trying to rip a 2iron.

Kick up a 1 inch grass tee and pop driver off the deck.

Does a lowered tee/ball equate to lower shot? I am thinking no necessarially.

When you do that, you are creating a flier lie (unclean contact).  So you may end up with less spin on the shot.

When I do that, I hit a low power fade that runs out to about 275 yards. It's definitely lower spin. But it never goes offline. Just runs.

I normally either hit the UDI 2 or my cobra f7 3 wood stinger sometimes ones working better than the other so just switch between them.

It's a fair question. Not every swing is built the same. I focus on sweeping it.

if winds in the forecast i swap out my 5 wood for a adams dhy pro 16* 2 iron for headwind shots but to be honest I end up still using my driver and trying my best to hit that nice little squeeze cut JT does, confidence in it is a lot greater

I play in windy conditions more often that I like, so over the years, I've learned how to flight the ball and hit Bullet trajectories that cut though the wind or stay below.  Depending on direction of wind and fairway, ALWAYS, 2i, 3i or 4i.   Yesterday, hit 3i into a breeze - 195yds, missed the green and bunker left, but easy up and down for par.

17degree 2hybrid with a almost flat to the ground tee. Ball back in stance a little and hit it hard. Never fails

Most of the time its driver with leveled shoulders ball back an inch or two. I have 2 tighter holes at my home course that I will play my 13.5 3 wood (I set it up that way just for those 2 holes).

I assume a strong headwind is something in the range of 40+ km/h...so probably driver if you want to hit the green in regulation 😄

Assuming it is a straight-forward hole where nothing elaborate is needed from the tee, I will hit my 3 wood - I am able to flight it low with draw, runs like a sailor's d**k on a firm, linksy environment.

I also will use a driver, teed lower.  It also helps to use the Greg Norman Low & Slow approach on my backswing to keep the ball down.

if the primary obstacle is wind: still the driver. i try to keep it low by moving tee front a bit + easy swing. what i get hurt more is the direction when winding—tho the OP specified "headwind" here, me talking in general—not the distance (neglectable loss somewhat). i find an easy swing always yields the result 'straight'. my goal, mentally, would be 'quick & straight' than too much pressure of 'low'.

regardless what kind of obstacles—wind, rain, jersey swamp chemical stink from bayonne, intimidation, too much beer etc etc—my 1st alt choice to the driver is 3 wood. often time it goes farther than the driver, if not at least straight. guess it's just confidence, not exactly science. nothing on my golf is science. all feelings, karmas, and alcohol.

3 iron (aka 4 iron in my bag, with 21º loft) is more for a short par 4 hole or long-arse par 3. just because i'm not Tiger. tho, i often see it's useful and safe choice on the 1st tee early in the morning or i got to the course in rush. with no sufficient warm up, an iron is always a better choice than a mess-up driver.
