Peter Millar Vs Travis Mathew and some questions

Recommended Posts

So I go on these kicks where I get obsessed with finding a particular golf item, equipment whatever.

Lately its been Millar and Mathew clothing.  So question for you guys who have had significant experience

Which one do you like better?  Which holds up better?

Do they all run true to size (i'm mainly talking polos and quarter zips/vests).  Not much in the pants game because I dont play enough in the winter to own a significant amount of golf pants.

Where is your go to spot to buy them?  I am obviously not trying to pay full price on the website so wondering if any hidden gems out there.  Ebay seems to have a ton of stuff.

PM seems to be more consistent in sizing, consistently ample room and sizing. TM over the year has varied some. I think when they first became big they were a little more slim, then I noticed about 3-5 years ago that their sizing got way generous and loose, and then now more back to normal. So you have to know the sizing of the item you're buying.

In terms of quality PM has won out over time for me. Their products just look better long term, and recent TM fabrics tend to snag a ton for me. They've got some great looking stuff initially, but it just doesn't hold up to washing and air drying for me.

I love both brands but I'm a mixed bag..

I wear TM primarily casually off the course since their shirts don't breath as well and don't have any wicking material to help on hot days.  I live in the Southeast so in the humid Summer I need as much help as I can get.

On the course, I wear PM Summer Comfort.  The polos run huge (for me) so I'm a full size smaller than I am in almost every other line.  They hold up well and they look nice in my opinion, maybe a little more formal than TM but can't go wrong with either.

As far as purchasing, TM used to have warehouse sales were they sold last year's product for really good pricing and I've bought the majority of my stuff that way although I'm not sure they have those sales anymore.  With Peter Millar you just have to wait until the have some of their season closeout (50-60% off) sales.

Good luck, both are quality so you can't go wrong either way.

I find PM polos on the larger side, but their sweaters fairly true to size.  I'm a L or an XL and all my PM polos are L and all my PM sweaters are XL.

love PM.  fit is consistent and holds up well.  they make a larger offering that breathe (imo) than TM. only their 77 and 777 materials are good for southern golf.  too much cotton otherwise.

This is easy.

Age 35 and older:     PM    Older customers so can't make the clothing skintight.  No one wants to see the early stages or mid stages of a mid section paunch wrapped in spandex.

Under 35:    TM   Slightly tighter fitting but not skin tight like higher fashion brands in this segment produce.

Quality Level:    Same -- about midpoint;   neither are of the highest quality or lowest quality of material or workmanship;

You're welcome.

Agree with all above. Normal Millar will be much larger than TM. Crown Crafted will be similar to TM if not a hair more slim. Over the last 12-18 months I have started to notice TM quality go down hill so have stopped buying them. Usually notice it on inside of collar where material starts fraying and even becoming discolored. This happens even though I never dry my shirts.

I would not buy TM retail price.

Their cotton or cotton/poly blend do not hold up and I rather stick with 100% Poly of PM.

I did scores some TM at Costco and Burnington Coat Factory but at same price level, PM is better.

Burlington huh? Interesting

I did get one of those TM polos from Costco, considering another

Yes, Burlington had blended golf polos for $14~$19 range along with their pull overs in $24 range.

You can get TM pretty cheap at Nordstrom Rack as well.   It’s usually pretty basic offerings but they are usually half price or more.

I love both brands.  I'm 45 and don't feel too old to be wearing TM.  TM is a golf lifestyle apparel brand and you can wear a lot of their stuff on and off the course which I love.  I wear a size Large in polos for both brands and size XL for pullovers from both.  I think the XL in the pullovers are a bit bigger on the TM than the Millar.  I do notice some color fading and snagging issues on some of the TM shirts.  However, I also noticed some pilling issues on some of the real lightweight PM styles like their Featherweight and Dri-Release fabrics.  I love how they fit/feel but don't like the pilling.

PM all day for me!  Their 50% off sale is great each year, but I usually just buy it directly through my club and get some logo'd and some w/o.

I'd recommend going up a size for pullover on both brands, I agree w/ the sentiment that PM holds up longer.

I currently own several PM and GFore shirts (both owned by same company and very similar material quality), and I previously owned many TM shirts.

The TM 77 or 777 line, I think it might have also been called Prestige, is their best line.  Soft blended material that lasts.  Like many others have said, their materials the last couple years since being purchased by Callaway have changed. Not as soft. The cuts are different. I've sold most of my TM shirts except a couple from the line I referenced in the first sentence.

As for PM, I wear the Crown Crafted line.  I'm also 5'8 150 and like clothes to fit tighter. It all depends on their line of clothing. I can only speak to that line.  And the quality is absolutely top notch. I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference between my GFore shirts and a PM Crown Crafted shirt in a blind try on. Exact same feel.

I own quite a bit of both. I prefer Peter Millar quality and  prefer the material on their polos for golf.  Have found that I'm still wearing Millar polos from like 4-5 years ago and they look great even after plenty of rounds in the summer heat.

I wear TM more for casual wear, untucked especially given the fact the polos are shorter. TM also has really muted colors in their portfolio overall. Not bad, but it's definitely a different aesthetic.

I seriously doubt I'm adding anything new to this, but here goes.

Like others have said...PM runs big. I REALLY like a few of their cotton blend shirts a lot...I don't care for their performance material clothes. Shiny fabric is ugly and feels like garbage.

I really like some of the TM shirts. Solid colors or the little patterns (trees, palms, etc...) are cool. I'm over color block style. Just don't like it. Their clothing is (as far as I know and the pieces I have) is synthetic but usually has more of a feel of cotton/pique. I like their color choices...nothing supersaturated and bright.

For what it's worth, I think Linksoul is the best of both worlds. Cotton blends like PM, but more my style than PM.

Couple questions for you guys

1. Is there anyway to tell that a PM shirt is the tailored fit just by looking at it.  I am a big fan of ebay, poshmark, etc given you can find brand new stuff for half the price.  Problem is a classic fit large in PM is too big for me, need tailored but I cant tell if its tailored unless the style is listed or the seller specifically states it.  Are the tags diff by chance?

2. Do any of you think a medium classic fit would fit like a large tailored fit?  Or should I just ignore classic fit altogether.

I can’t answer the second part but PM crown crafted are the tailored fit. If looking at pictures online it will say crown crafted on tag inside collar.

Their crown crafted is pretty tight fitting compared to their summer comfort. I’m an XS in the summer comfort and a medium in their crown crafted so...

Correct, the summer comfort will be closer to a Footjoy fit whereas the Crown Crafted will fit more like Travis Mathew (maybe slightly more fitted through the chest). This is the case for polos. I have not started down the path with Crown Crafted outer layers yet. I just started buying the polos when discounted online since it doesn't seem like I can ever find them in any pro shops. If I could it would probably be all I ever buy.

Ever tried Johnnie O? I find it it to be a little better PM and TM style wise and it is good quality too. I’m buying that the most right now.

Stitch has some nice offerings too, including in between sizes, but they have a much smaller catalog.

Never tried Johnnie

Love my stitch quarter zips, never had their polos but i just ordered the 'mystery box' of polos from them in a large, praying they fit

I wanted the 'combo' box but i need a XL in their quarter zips and likely need a large in polos and you cant do diff sizes.

Next year when Stitch offers the 25% off gift cards before xmas then has their YE 50% off sale after xmas, I am going bonkers haha

This was my first year buying their stuff so i was unaware of that sale, I hope they do it every year, imagine they will.

Very curious to hear how that mystery box works out. The deals are amazing, but I've always been too nervous about which style / pattern I'll get to buy one.

I kind of am too but then i figured, 95% of the stuff they sell is good looking (at least in my opinion), I wouldn't buy all of it at full price BUT i'd probably wear most of it if the deal was right and that mystery box deal cant be beat.

Also there is always the chance to resell online and likely recoup what it cost per polo if there are 1 or 2 that I don't love.

I don't know how you guys can justify wearing cotton polos outside for golf in the summer, especially you guys in the South like me. I tossed all of my cotton years ago. Seems like some of these guys like Linksoul and TM push a bunch of expensive cotton golf shirts... WTH?

I'm a big fan of PM, huge selection, great for the heat and great looking summer patterns/looks. I will admit that they are very spring and summery in their colors, so wearing PM in the winter looks like you are ready for summer to be here!!! HAHAHA!!! I also like Vineyard Vines as well.

This was my haul, I liked every shirt however since I've never worn a stitch polo the large runs a little bigger than I like. I reordered a box in ML

My only complaint with this brand, XL pullovers fit just fine yet I'm likely a ML in polos? That's a full 2 size swing...I don't even consider less than a large in any other brand out there.

2nd box is on the way, mad the first isn't gonna work esp if I lose a few pounds like I've been working on
