Pinehurst Donald Ross package

Ac18

Recommended Posts

First time Pinehurst trip coming up next month and was curious of feedback from folks who have done this package before.

It looks like it comes with meals, how are they? Do you have to go to a certain restaurant on the resort or can they be applied anywhere? Worth taking advantage of or do most folks go elsewhere and skip them?

Any recommendations on lodging between Carolina vs Manor vs Villa?

If you are coming up next month I would recommend the below package. It is a better deal. You have like 5-6 options for dinner. The breakfast is at the Carolina hotel, which is where I am staying in February.

second the votes for the Titleist package

meals: we last did the Donald Ross in 2019 and at that time it was a 3 course meal for each person, at any restaurant on property. It was a ton of food (too much usually)

hotels: Carolina is the main hotel so there are some advantages there in terms of location. I thought the rooms were in need of updates. The Manor is smaller but recently renovated and has a new whiskey bar - we are giving that place a try this trip

It is temporarily closed according to the website. I am guessing because of Covid-19 restrictions. I believe bars are not allowed to be open in North Carolina.

Yes, I think all of the resort's other "bars" are able to skirt the restriction by offering food. On the website for the Tavern and Ryder Cup lounge it says last call 9pm and last seating 8pm. But the whiskey bar is closed for the time being.

We missed being able to take advantage of the Titleist package by a few days so we're doing the bed and breakfast package.  We were there in the Fall and did the Donald Ross Package.  The dinners on property, frankly, were not very good. So we're going to do dinners on our own this time.

Anything specific about the dinners that you didn’t like or recommendations on where to go?

There were six of us and we all agreed.  Service was way worse than 2 years ago, particularly at the 1895 house.  The quality of the food was average at best, and below average when considering the cost.  One in our party ordered a steak at both restaurants (Carolina and 1895) and both couldn't get it cooked correctly.  The only upside was the corkage fees we were charged for the wine I brought with me.

We had a great meal at the Ironwood, and plan on returning there.  We're also going to try Eliiott's and Villagio in the Magnolia Inn.

wow. Last time we were there was 1.5 years ago and I thought all the food was quite good. 1895 was our favorite.

I've heard great things about #8 when it's in good condition (no heavy rain as I heard from a friend it drains terribly).

#3 is awesome too - very very different from #2 and #4; less than 6000 yards and will only take < 3 hours to play. Shot-maker / thinkers course with a lot of difficulty around the greens.

Though it’s likely too late to influence your decision, I’ll be playing Tobacco Road, Pine Needles, No. 2 and No. 7 the weekend of 4/23.

Will report back with course conditions - but also welcome any recommendations in the meantime.

Have a blast man! Just did the same trip here but #4 instead of #7.

Appreciate it! Did you find any particularly good watering holes down there for in between rounds? Staying in a VRBO, so not beholden to any particular resort property.

There are a ton of spots in the area that you will easily stumble upon, without any effort.

My wife went with me and we had a dinner package, but I checked out the Pinehurst Brewery one night and it was great - good food, better atmosphere. Race Track is a great spot for breakfast and really close to PH resort.

We stayed at Pine Needles lodge the first night, Carolina Hotel the second and third, then a local hotel in Cary the last night. Can't wait to get back - Pine Needles and TRoad especially are awesome tracks. #2 and #4 are world class.

Thanks guys. I heard good things about #7 as well. So among #7, #8 and #9, which one we should go if we are allowed to choose?

#8 and its not even close. #9 is personally one of my least favorite courses in the area, I would play just about any course over it.

Pick up this old discussion, as my group of 4 are heading to Pinehurst this May.We also bought Donald Ross Package.

My question for the members who experienced Pinehurst are:

Besides #2 and #4, which course we should play. #8, or #9?

Thank you so much in advance.

#8 and it is not even close. #9 is meh at best. Then again I am not a fan of most Nicklaus courses...

Oh, I just realized I miss read the advice. Just called to change the course from #9 to #8. The tee time is so tight, and the third day that we stay doesn't have anything available on #2 or #4, but luckily locked in a noon tee time for #8. If any of you want to go there, really need book everything earlier.

Thanks again for all the help.

Has anyone does the summer tee golf package at Pinehurst before? What are the course conditions like? I know the aerfication schedule might make things difficult. Thinking about going in early July.

Course conditions firm and fast, but if you can take the heat it's still in beautiful shape.

Aeration that part of the country is usually june, so July probably okay. They should be able to tell you the schedule.

I grew up well south of Pinehurst and we still were able to play throughout the summer at all times of day. It's hot and humid but it's not like Arizona or Houston or something.

Does anyone know if alcohol is included at all with dinner? Or is it just the meal that is included?

Just your meal and non-alcoholic drinks.
